Another funny anecdote: For the longest time, I thought Nakigitsune was spelled Nagikitsune. I also thought he was a wakizashi for the longest time. I even played the game back when it was in English. It seemed that I didn't read a thing.

My first thoughts are that this song is about Nakigitsune’s loneliness of when he was a sword being solely used for display for the Akimoto Family, and to this day, in the Tokyo National Museum. “Erase, erase cold memories,” could allude to his lack of use outside of being a display.  

Upon trying to research more about Nakigitsune other than my surface knowledge about him being quiet and letting his Fox do all the talking, I found out that the “naki (鳴き)” in Nakigitsune means “cry” or “crying.” So, if you combine that with kitsune, and we all know kitsune means fox, we get “crying fox.” 

I assume that with the limited information about Nakigitsune that we had available at the time, PolyphonicBranch decided to use Nakigitsune's name as the premise to this piece. The majority of the lyrics are melancholic in nature. 

I also want to bring up kitsune (in the yokai context) representing hiding one’s true self, and the difficulty of doing so. “I peel off what is covering my mouth” can allude to a mask. Nakigitsune wears a menboo, or a type of face armor, and rarely ever takes that off. The fact that he’s removing it enhances the next line’s punch, “emotions fall between the gap into reality.” He’s removing his facade and letting his emotions take over. To explore the same stanza, the lines “How far do I have to run to get there? / Ah, I’ll just destroy it,” alludes to his disdain towards his loneliness and refusal to travel far to achieve camaraderie. Therefore, he gives up and breaks that barrier himself instead of following the wall that encases him. 

Nakigitsune is a shy guy, and interacting with others doesn’t seem to be his strong suit. This could be rationalized with the actual blade barely seeing battle and only encased behind glass upon a shelf. However, Naki is inclined to try and socialize with others who do share fox motifs, like Kogitsunemaru. We can never truly tell what goes on in his head, and I believe this song is PolyphonicBranch’s interpretation of Nakigitsune’s reserved character. 

Whoever calls out his name in the bridge of the song is obviously someone he cares about and wants to unite with, and whoever it is, it’s up to interpretation. 

What if it’s Fox?

I wanted to talk more about his companion, but this piece seems more centered around Nakigitsune. But what if Fox is the one who’s calling his name, the friend who gives Naki company and breaks him from his loneliness?

Something to think about.
