Always the Thorns

I FINALLY FINISHED THIS THING!!!! oTL

I’ve been dreaming of a “cover card” for Always the Thorns for a long time and I finally was able to realize it

ID: digital illustration. The canvas is in the shape of a tarot card, but the two figures shown are arranged like the face cards of a standard playing card deck: mirrored and inverted, so that when one is upright, the other is upside down. The canvas is divided diagonally by a substantial, thorny branch of a vining rose. Further thorny tendrils grow from it into both halves of the card. The likeness of a double gold foil stripe edges the card.

Bede from Pokémon Sword and Shield is one of the two figures. He is shown as he is in his early pre-battle animations: spinning a great ball on the pointer finger of his right hand and looking down his nose, cocky and arrogant. The thorny vines have wrapped around him comprehensively, including two tendrils that cross over his smirking mouth. One of these also crosses his left eye, and a single red rose in full bloom fully covers this eye. The two vines encircle his head as well, tangled in his curls and reaching up off his head, still growing toward the sun.

The second figure is Merritt Hargrave, my SWSH OC Trainer and main character of Always the Thorns. Clad in his black leather jacket, he looks back over his shoulder and up. His eyes are tired, with substantial dark circles. There is a hint of sadness in his expression. The thorny vines reach for him, but have not found purchase; one insinuates itself toward his bare wrist, exposed from where his hand is tucked into his jacket pocket, and another is approaching the back of his jacket collar. A fresh, young shoot before him displays a single young flower, beginning to open, but he isn’t looking at it.

Mer’s sky is Hammerlocke blue; Bede’s is Stow-On-Side purple. Both are studded with clouds.

I could ramble literally forever about this piece — about what I was thinking about as made it — but I will leave it here: this is Mer and Bede just before the very start of their journey in-game. This is the Mer who has not yet received his starter and endorsement, and this is the Bede who still believes he’s destined to stand at the Chairman’s side.

The Spikemuth Irregulars

Full-color dolls, refs, and rambling under the cut~

As I was preparing to write Mer’s return to Spikemuth in Always the Thorns, I realized that there are just a ton of generic Team Yell Grunts and that, for Mer, these wouldn’t just be nameless NPCs. The vast majority of these would be people he’s known for years. So I made a list, designed some dolls, was more or less pleased with the doll depiction of these characters as they took shape, and then I had to admit it to myself: if I was customizing all of their piercings (which I was doing instinctively) and there were several who simply did not resemble their dolls closely enough (or were a mashup of several dolls), I was never going to be able to write them with anything even approaching consistency if I didn’t make those choices, write them out, and then draw them.

I played myself, of course. Because now I want to draw them like a fuckn double-page spread in a manga with all their Pokémon and everything. ugh. XD

ID: Pencil drawing, full body. Halsin is seated on a log, in 3/4 view facing mostly away from the camera. Astarion is perched on his lap in profile view, his back toward Halsin's chest. Astarion's legs are crossed at the knees and has one elbow rested on the higher knee, his hand hanging loose and graceful. Both wear camp clothes. Halsin tugs Astarion's collar down in the back, laying a kiss where his neck becomes his back. Astarion's head is tilted back somewhat, and he looks toward Halsin out of the corner of his eye with a happy, amused little smile. One small heart hovers near Astarion's head, and two hover near Halsin's.

ID: Pencil drawing, full body. Halsin sits on a log. Astarion leans with one knee rested on it, as though about to climb into Halsin's lap. Halsin gently holds each of Astarion's wrists in his hands, with one of Astarion's hands resting on Halsin's cheek. Halsin turns his face into it, planting a kiss on the heel of Astarion's hand. Astarion looks gently surprised, and has a hint of a blush. Both are shirtless, wearing their camp trousers.
