pre-statement:

-Martin's visiting Elias in prison now

-Martin's here to ask if Peter's telling the truth

-"OUR DEAR ARCHIVIST" I nearly spit my water. that's certainly a phrasing to choose. yeah ok Elias. shared ownership over Jon between you and Martin actually seems pretty canonically accurate. so I can't complain.

-Martin says that Elias loves manipulating people and Elias pulls an uno reverse card

--STATEMENT--

-letter from Robert Smirke to Jonah Magnus

-they're the last two survivors of their spooky fear research

-Robert Smirke has been trying to fight the entities via building churches, seems like he's the only one making a genuine effort to fight them

-Robert's had spooky entities dreams

-he might have personally created the rituals?

-he's like 'please don't try to wear The Watcher's Crown haha,,, you're such a smart and respectable man,,,,'

-Robert Smirke is being Watched, capital W

-Robert's concerned that Jonah intentionally eye-cursed him

really thinking about the phrasing robert smirke used in 138-- "if you have any remaining ambitions to use our work, to try and wear the Watcher’s Crown, you must abandon them!"

It's interesting, that the watcher's crown is something to be worn. I think it means that, much like in the Unknowing and what the Cult of the Lightless Flame was trying to do, there must be someone at the center of the ritual, a focal point, the one who wears that Watcher's Crown. And I'm sort of wondering, what's the power conferred vs. danger endured on this? If it's more power than danger, then I'd say that Elias (aka Probably-Jonah) plans to be the one wearing it. But if it's dangerous, then he's definitely going to make Jon do it. And another thing to consider, perhaps the ritual isn't incredibly dangerous, but the preparation is... (looking really hard at all the scars Jon has been accumulating).

Also, on the subject of Elias... I don't like how he's just staying in prison, because it means everything is going according to his plan. He's not someone you can keep in prison unless he wants to be there, so the conclusion that I draw must be that things are happening like he wants them to. And that's worrying, because he does not have everyone's best interests at heart.

Martin definitely could have been about to say anything with that “I-” but it’s my headcanon that he was about to sign off by saying “I love you”. He got too comfortable saying it quietly to Jon in private as he sat in his hospital room, holding his hand or reading to him from a book Jon liked, until the nurse told him visiting hours were over for the day and each time he’d very quietly say “I love you, Jon” before leaving. Talking to Jon through the tape didn’t feel too different until he caught himself at the last second.

I love the concept of old timey / Victorian old men shivering in fear of what they have brought upon the world. Oh Smirke I’m sorry buddy but there’s nothing you could do to stop it.
