Melanie really was the only one who could reasonably quit. She has someone on the outside to support her and no one she'll really miss on the inside to hold her back.

Basira doesn't feel as trapped since they value the world saving work more, and Jon only sees the price as worth it if it actually gives him something to live for. (Which being free with Martin would be). Martin, like Basira, is here for duty. And of course, Daisy and Basira likewise wouldn't leave without each other

hot take but people are too harsh on jon given that he was only head archivist for like four years. gertrude was canonically about as much of a dumbass in her early years (as per mag 145). the only reason why she got so good at it was because she managed 1. to live for so damn long and 2. not to fully devote herself to the eye, in addition to the fact that they were much more open about the powers during her time (mag 167)

-Agnes would refer to Gertrude as her 'anchor'

-Gertrude's on Team Gertrude and has no other allegiances. doesn't care about the Eye, doesn't care about the institute, doesn't really care about anyone else
