Episode 149, Concrete Jungle. The dialogue Martin and Georgie have in this episode is... something. It hurts a lot more when you listen with the fact of Martin's childhood at the forefront of your mind.

Georgie's perspective on Jon versus Melanie is really based on how they acted around her and not the reality of their conditions.

Like Melanie was clearly going to a lot of effort to fake coherence and normalcy around her, whereas Jon was living with her while framed for murder and realizing he was becoming less human but having zero knowledge as to how. Jon just couldn't fake being alright (not that that has ever been his speciality).

But Melanie only got better because Jon and Basira staged an intervention to limit her connection to the slaughter. An intervention that was 100% against her will that she tried to murder Jon for. Likewise, being cut off from the hunt have Daisy the disconnect needed to get better. But, if no outside force does anything about Jon than of course he's only gonna get worse.

Also, the effect of grieving Jon's apparent death cannot be forgotten for how it tanks a relationship.

Which of course clashes horribly with Martin's perspective. He was exposed to Melanie's slaughter excesses and he does understand that Jon desperately wants help but has no support. But to Martin, that emotional support can't compete with saving Jon's life.

Still, it's sad. Jon desperately wants help and support and a solution to his increased need to feed but he only gets hostility. Melanie didn't want help and got it. Personal perspective really is everything. Jon values Melanie far more than she does him so helping her with the bullet is an easy choice, but no one is there for him with a solution to his struggles.

Which is of course the beauty of this show. Everything sucks for Jon because he's the main character, and people can perpetuate that suffering while still being 100% in character. In Georgie's case, she's probably even making a good call, although she'd be better off cutting ties with everyone at the institute.

I love the conversation between Georgie and Martin. Georgie is right to a good degree – you can't help people who don't want to be helped, although I would add that sometimes, it depends a lot on who is reaching out. Maybe Georgie isn't the right person to help Jon because he won't accept her kind of help, or won't accept help from her. Maybe someone else could. I do think she has healthy boundaries, good for her for enforcing them, even though it feels tragic for Jon, to see him abandoned because right now, he has no one to give him strength. But she did try to help him, back when he was on the run and slipping down that slippery slope, and he only accepted it when it didn't touch his connection to the Eye, so this is really something where she can't help him. It's easier for Melanie, I guess, because she does accept Georgie's help, and they are apparently compatible in what kind of help the one can give and the other receives. External motivation can do wonders, and Melanie has it. Jon doesn't. Where would he get the strength when he doesn't get positive reinforcement, when there's nothing and no one to be strong for? Maybe Martin could do it, or be that person, maybe not. It seems like he tries as best as he can, indirectly, but right now, he has other priorities, and he can't do both. I like the (I think it's a discworld) quote about personal and important not being the same, and my interpretation of Martin in this situation would be that he tries to do what he thinks is important, even though it may cost him something that's personal for him.
