There is no possible other explanation for this magazine cover on the left other than an example of using racist caricatures of Black men in popular culture.
LeBron is positioned as an aggressive, angry, Black man who is holding a thin, white woman (Gisele), who an be thought as a victi of the Black man’s rage and sexuality. The Brute caricature, which can be seen with this example, was historically used against Black men by stating they were dangerous and would hurt and ruin the purity of white women, who were thought to be completely defensesless.
The photo on the right shows a depiction of the Black man as being animalistic (quite literally) and has captured the pure, white woman who is unable to defend herself. These depictions of Black men were commonly used in ante-bellum America and as shown with the image on the lett, still persist today.

A new issue of Sci Phi Journal the magazine all about Science Fiction and Philosophy had just come out. If you like Superversive fiction and stuff that makes you think you will enjoy it and Superversive SF’s own Poet in Residence Ben Zwycky has an ongoing serial “Beyond the Mist” running in it at the moment.
