Magic e

Ed-Ed 在之前的回應問咗個問題，我一直未答： ”不過, 本 silent e 話就話叫 silent, 但其實佢話有佢就會令成個字個發音轉咗架喎, 佢唔喺你上面個 list 出現, 係因為佢係另一樣野?” 其實我本來的 post 都有係咁依提過吓： ”final e -- late, gene, five, tone, tune” 有沒有留意我的例子是 a, e, i, o, u 各一： late, gene, five, tone, tune 我話這個 e 唔發聲，不過我唔會叫佢做 silent e。 好多時教小朋友 phonics 都會講 magic e 會把之前的 vowel 變成要讀番那個字母的本音 a 要讀 /ei/, e 要讀 /i:/, i 要讀 /ai/, o 要讀 /əʊ/, u 要讀 /ju:/。叫佢做 magic e 比較有趣，比較 catchy 。但現在開始有些人會用個比較技術的名堂 split digraph，因為佢地覺得 magic e 這個名稱有點誤導。 Digraph -- 嘩，咁深0既字！唔怕，一字咁淺：兩個字母合起來才能代表一個音。例如英語中的 sh, th 等。 Split digraph 是因為 a_e, e_e, i_e, o_e, u_e 中間隔咗個 consonant。後面那個 e 是用來表示前面的 vowel 的讀音，所以叫 split。 正因為樣這樣，其實這個 final e 和之前講的 CVC rule 是有密切關係的。 regretted 如果寫成 regreted 會令人以為讀 regreeted，那 double t 是用來「保護」gret 中的 "short" vowel e。除了這個 e 之外，其他的 vowel 都會有相類似效果，所以加 ing 時要寫作 regretting。 regretful 不用寫作 regrettful，因為己經有個 f 隔開，兩個 vowel 中間有兩個 consonant。 CVC rule 中間的 vowel 是 "short" vowel。單一個 a,e,i,o,u 通常都是 "short" vowel。要把 a,e,i,o,u 變 "long" vowel 通常是加多一個 vowel 的字母，例如 teeth, tie, too，又或者好似 final e 咁隔咗一個 consonant 後加個 vowel。 Meet 不用寫成 meetting，beat 不用寫成 beatting 因為 ee，ea 本來就是 "long" vowel，唔會有機會讀錯，不用加多個 t 去保護佢。 如果是多音節的字，例如 abandon，最後的音節是 unstressed，那個 o 是讀作 schwa /ə/，即一個很輕聲的 vowel。schwa 不需要「保護」，不用 double 最尾的 consonant，所以是 abandoned。
