Hate to the Highest Degree
Oh, how I hate history lessons,
they drone on and on and on,
about so many systems of discrimination and hate,
throwing words around like racism and sexism,
but the part that I hate most is that it’s considered history.
Now of course, this occurred centuries ago,
and of course they had their lasting effects
but what people don’t acknowledge is how powerful those effects are
and how ever-lasting they were made to be.
People need a lesson of the now,
how mindsets are so stubbornly hateful,
that there are brown girls begging their parents to love freely
that there are attacks and harassment
done onto anyone who dares skew from the ‘norm’.
We live in a time of such pungent hate,
we are desensitized to violence in the news,
and those who are privileged take but a second to acknowledge their privilege,
before mulling over some celebrity’s new look.
There is so much bitterness on my phone,
so much antagonism in the world,
it’s almost hard to breathe.
I don’t like the shell that’s extending over me,
I don’t like becoming this cold, callous character,
but how else am I supposed to protect myself
from the hate, from the history, from the ignorance
how else am I supposed to protect myself from the now.
