Maggie McGowan is co-founder of Magpie Goose, and currently oversees the day to day operations of the business.Maggie studied Law and Politics at the University of Melbourne, and moved to the NT in 2013. She spent three years working as a Welfare Rights and Civil Lawyer at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA) in Darwin & Katherine; travelling to remote communities across the Top End of the NT working with Aboriginal people on immediate legal needs and larger systemic problems.

Through her remote travel Maggie was introduced to and fell in love with the beautiful textiles that were being designed and hand screen-printed at community art centres. In working intensively with clients disenfranchised and impoverished by Community Development Program/ work for the dole, she realised the importance of creative income generation through enterprise. The idea for Magpie Goose was born: an opportunity for the world to connect with and celebrate Aboriginal people, stories and culture through fashion; while also creating economic opportunities for Aboriginal people in remote communities.

The Magpie Goose (Anseranas semipalmata)...

 ...is a waterbird native to northern Australia and New Guinea- and coincidentally the namesake for my username. Although similar, these animals are no longer classified in the same family as ducks, geese, and swans (Anatidae) and are therefore found within their own family. The magpie goose can be found in wetland ecosystems, thriving on grasses and occasionally small inverts. They are well known for the characteristic loud, car horn-like honking.

INTERESTING STUFF: During breeding seasons (approximately between February and June), the male Magpie Goose may mate with one or two females. Whether it be one or two females, the male will help raise the offspring, increasing the chances for survival.

STATUS: Least concern

Personal Experiences: There is currently a male-female pair of Magpie Geese at the zoo which I directly care for. Two geese alone are enough to drown out all sounds within ear shot. Radio calls? I'll have to wait for a break in their HONKing. The male goose in particular is highly aggressive- he will vocalize, flap his wings to inspire fear, and even lunge forward to take a bite of your pants (or more!). To fully clean and care for their area, he must be temporarily moved to a holding unit. Although he may be just a goose, he knows how to make a human second-guess coming near him!
