Abel and Maia had an autonomous date. I think they’re trying to repair their marriage.
Nicolas and Maia hoist Elaine over their shoulders, carrying her with their hands. She doesn’t respond. Her body is limp and unmoving, that of a dead thing.
“She--she’s dying!” Nicolas cries out, tears running down his face. He looks over at his sister Maia, and sees that tears are running down hers, too.
“No, no no no! This can’t be happening, this can’t be happening...!” She mutters under her breath, helping Nicolas bring their mother closer to the church even as her vision blurs.
Shawn looks back at Elaine and her children, and his heart breaks. He points them to the bench outside of the doors, already knowing what must be done. He feels the darkness of anguish blacken his heart, but he can not cry.
A second wife dead before me, he thinks, and a cornerstone to our safest harbor. Four pillars that built us up, now only three. No one will take her place.
