Maiacetus (mother whale) was a semi aquatic cetacean that lived around 47 million years ago. At this point, cetaceans were still not fully aquatic, but swimming would have been much easier than walking. Maiacetus and other protocetids, likely spent most of their time in the water, but would have returned to land to give birth. Maiacetus is known from only two specimens, one of which was found with a fossilized fetus, not yet birthed. Modern whales give birth underwater tail first as opposed to land animals that typically give birth head first.
