thinking about how if the headcanons that mai dealt with infertility/miscarriages are correct that probably meant that the fire sages or zuko’s advisors tried to convince him to divorce mai after a certain amount of time and he said no and then they had izumi... oh god i am emotional
Ever since they broke up, Mai calls Zuko "Fire lord" and bows to him like any other citizen would. Zuko tells her that there's no need to do that and that she can call him by his name, meaning that they can still be friends. But Mai refuses to do so, because she really wants to keep her distance and cut off any type of relationship between them so she can finally move on.

The ‘Get thee to a nunnery’ scene where Ophelia tries to return Hamlet’s love letters but he just yells at her for like three minutes. Maiko stans I’m so sorry.

Imagine Mai during Zuko's first Agni Kai, sitting next to her parents, forced to witness such horrible act. She tries really hard not to burst into tears, but she can't help it. She lets out a little moan and a tear rolls down her cheek. Her mother glares at her, expecting her daughter to restrain her emotions and "behave".
Mai obeys as she stares at the awful view. Everything is blurry, she is blinded by the flames and the burning red and orange colors that envelop the room. She closes her eyes but hearing Zuko's screams makes everything even worse. She had never experienced such pain in her short life before.
