Is there an Irish sign language or do you use BSL? I’ve been learning Makaton for work, and apparently it’s basically simplified BSL, but the other day someone at work mentioned that some BSL using people don’t like or look down on Makaton being used. Usually I wouldn’t bring it up and just get on with things, but I decided to ask what sign you were using so thought I’d ask your opinions on Makaton at the same time?
Yours sincerely,
The person practicing “We wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year” over and over in the corner
In answer to your questions:
Yes, there is an Irish Sign Language, my sign name is actually a combination of Irish and British Sign Language: B(ISL)-bow (BSL). I use BSL because I live in the UK.
I don't personally like the use of Makaton in most situations. It's not a full language like BSL and it's pointless to teach it and THEN pivot to teaching BSL. If you want British kids to sign, teach them BSL. You don't teach English out of sequence or simplified.
I'm no expert, of course, and I've been told it's great for people who might struggle with BSL such as some intellectual disabilities or mobility issues. So take with a grain of salt, I'm not a huge fan of how it's used by hearing people, but I'm one biased guy who's not the be all and end all.
Merry Christmas!
With 7s selective mutism, there hasn't been a lot of options beyond 'leaving space' for him to answer if he can, and a couple of communication cards at school, and giving him a pen and paper to write what he can.
On the same day it occurred to me that Makaton could be a good idea, we had a knock at the front door. Answering, which I usually don't do, I was greeted by a charity rep who quickly told me he is autistic and passionate about his charity work - for a charity supporting Deaf children and campaigning for BSL/Makaton to be taught in schools. It felt like one of those weird cosmic alignment moments.
I explained that the boys are also autistic and that, strangely, I'd been thinking about Makaton as an option for 7 and his selective mutism.
Within ten minutes, I'd agreed to a monthly donation (more than happy to do this!), signed their petition for the use/teaching of BSL in schools, and had a great chat with the guy about how his autism impacts him, and how he liked that we were adapting for 7 rather than letting things just float by.
I got a letter, confirming the charity payments and it included this collection of fridge magnets, teaching the fingerspelling alphabet. I'd known this already, but 7 was immediately interested. Looking over it for around a half hour, he taught himself to spell his name, and 6s name, and to fingerspell 'hello' and 'no'. He was proud of himself, and I was proud of him!
I'm going to sink hard into Makaton, and see what I can bring for him to use when he's struggling to talk. I'm not sure he'll manage to effectively sign at school with eyes on him, but giving him the tools can't be bad.
Any autistic people here who use Makaton or Sign Language or any kind of AAC?
My landlady's grandson is autistic and non-verbal and his family isn't really dealing with it well. I'm also autistic (they don't know that) but don't use any of these but I think he could benefit from something like this and I want to suggest it to the family.
I don't want to seem like I'm just some stranger telling them what to do with their kid but I want to help him. So I'm trying to do some more research.
Do any of you have experience using these? How do you feel about it?
where can i find sign along makaton videos that arent nursery rhymes or pop songs 😭
I don't post on Tumblr but I know people who like patapon are more active on here so have this piece of art that is for a comic I'm working on
Hello Tumblr, I have a question : What this sign means in sign language ?
I found this article about a makaton rebrand using sign language but I can't find what it means.
thank you for your answers

The Makaton Charity currently keep most of their resources behind paywalls (£70-80 per class, £30 for a book of core vocab, £100 per year for access to all digital resources etc), so someone has very kindly uploaded a large amount of the core vocabulary to Quizlet
Quizlet is a lightning fast way to learn vocabulary.

Some resources are also available in The Languages Mega Folder
If you search up Makaton on Instagram and YouTube, there are several tutors uploading video tutorials of some signs and some signed songs
And if you can stand watching children's TV, Something Special on Cbeebies features Makaton
