Make a Circle by Elliot Joyce Pagan punk musician Lucas is fully prepared to spend this Yule with the rest of the band and his beautiful bass guitar when Oliver, his boyfriend of almost a year, asks if he wants to join the rest of the Han family for their annual winter celebration.
Dear Gus & Baby #2,
Gus likes "making a circle" before we eat, which is what we do when we eat at Nene's house. And we pretend Nene is also a part of our circle. At lunch today, we also pretended Mom was in the circle. But he wasn't content with just that.
"Dad, you have to say what Nene says when we make a circle."
"What does she say?"
"I don't know. What does she say?"
"She says "Thank you God for this food. Amen."
"Amen."
When Mom came home for dinner, we made another circle and I asked Gus if he wanted to say what Nene says. He said, "Thank you Garver for this food. Amen."
Garver is my employer, and his edit to the prayer sat well in my agnostic heart. All of the gratitude, none of the superstition.
Dad.

Lately I'm all about good laughs, smiles, and heart to heart conversations.
And by the end of this week, I'll have a sweet grin on my face.
