The Art Assignment: Make A Rug

I’ve been working on this​ rug for more than two years now, so here’s an update:

diameter = 90cm; my last update

diameter = 128cm; realized I was adding too many stitches and had to undo 13cm around the border and redo it

diameter = 150cm; this rug was featured in an art show!

current diameter = 210cm

an observation: the different thicknesses of the fabrics causes inconsistency in the weave of the rug.

a sensation: sometimes when I am working on this rug, I feel more like the fates with their spindle, or Penelope unweaving her wedding clothes every night. What I mean is that a rug is not just a rug and the consequence of all this rug-making is greater than I can imagine; sometimes I feel as though I am making a tapestry of my life itself.

Make a Rug, @theartassignment

I’m a little late to the party on this one.

Technically, I started making this rug months and months ago. However, when I started I only had a couple of t-shirts. So, I’ve kept the rug In my room, slowly adding to it. It has become a hodge-podge of my past adventures, including fabrics from things such as, but not limited to: - my first race t-shirt (from a kid’s fun run) - hand-me-down jeans from my sister that turned out to be too short - my dad’s free t-shirts from donating blood - a t-shirt I got from volunteering at Cub Scout camp - a pillowcase I got at a science fair (I know that doesn’t make sense) - old fleece scraps - a towel I got as a favor at a beach party - too-short pajamas

The end of the rope remains untied, and I will continue to add more fabric (at least for a little while. I have an image of this rug in a kid’s room, or by my bookshelves, in ten, twenty years) (maybe I’m planning too far ahead).

The Art Assignment - Make a Rug: Martial Arts part 2

I’ve continued to work on the rug made out of my family’s old taekwondo belts! (My cat loves to sit on the rug as it gets bigger.) It’s been slow and difficult work since I’ve been hand-sewing the belts together, and they are nearly as tough as seatbelts. After I got through camouflage belt, I decided to try weaving belts onto the rug without sewing each one to the next to speed up my process. I just left each end hanging and started with a new belt. This worked pretty well for a little while, but as the rug got bigger, it got weaker and more lopsided. So I pulled out a lot of my progress and reconsidered. After discussion with my family, we realized that my dad could use his drill press to drill holes in the end of each belt. That way I'll be able to sew them together without the hard work of forcing the needle through each belt. So once my dad gets around to that, I’ll be back on track to completion! Art Assignment: Make a Rug

Based on the Art Assignment from this video.

EPISODE 10 INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Gather old textiles (clothes, bed sheets, etc.) 2. Make a rug 3. Share your journey of making the rug and what you do on it 4. Upload it using #theartassignment 5. Fame and glory (your work might be in a future episode)

I made a small rug! And a time lapse video (because I love time lapse videos!)

I used fabric from the shower curtain I made for my BurningMan camp. I knew I wasn’t going to use that fabric for a sewing project but I didn’t want to just throw it away. I’m happy that it’s going to have another life as a rug!

Here’s a picture of our camp this year. (You can sorta see the shower curtain behind that orange banner with the nuclear symbol on it.)

Turns out there was only enough fabric to make a small rug:

But my cat really liked it and I thought “why not make a rug for my cat?” He’ll probably get more use out of it than I will anyway. We have wall-to-wall carpet.
