Coat: waisted

My first ever actual clothing project! Pretty happy with it, was not too hard and got me much more comfortable with the sewing machine. More notes the cut.

This is based on the collarless waistcoat drafting guide from Croonborg's 1917 Red Book of Men's Tailoring. It's a pretty simple pattern, forgoing darts in favour of cutting the back in two halves and putting that and the side-seams not along the grain.

I don't know what you're meant to do with the little collar tab that sticks out at 11 I just cut it off and didn't use that. It was fine.

I have mostly only ever sewn by hand so this was a good chance to learn some machine work and get a bit more comfortable with my Lada T132. The lining is flat-lined and topsewn in, which was mostly machine, and the back is a single layer of lining so that had to be either hemmed (by hand) or twill taped (by machine).

Materials-wise, the main fabric is Shweshwe, a calico with characteristic bright prints and crisp prints that is now produced in South Africa by the Da Gama textiles mill. It comes in very narrow 90cm bolts and it's quite nice to work with, very sturdy. If you want to work with it, note that it comes heavily starched so if it feels crazy stiff, don't worry, just prewash it. The lining is a random black cotton sateen I also bought when I was back in South Africa, and the interfacing in the front is some heavy linen I got for a different project I never ended up doing. The buttons are some replica antique elk buttons my partner got me.

This is "done" but there are some possible changes. I cut the design down to four buttons but it looks like I should really add in the last one, the bottom of the placket doesn't like to sit still, so I'll do that sometime. In addition, while it's not strictly necessary as it fits pretty well, a back cinch is traditional and this waistcoat is I think sized with one in mind. I have some buckles kicking around but I'll need to sew some tape.

spent the day adding these patches to my favorite winter socks. was it worth it time wise? probably not. but i love repairing things instead of throwing them out whenever possible
