What are your Thoughts on what makes a good kdrama????
Ohhhh wow okay. This is hard. I don’t really know how to articulate things like this. I actually don’t have a lot of criteria? But the dramas that I am very attached to and love have:
A great otp/great relationships b/w characters: It doesn’t have to be romantic, but I think I always enjoy watching a drama where I can see the characters come together. I just enjoy all types of relationships because I think they’re really important for people and can show us who we are and also help us in life whether they’re familial, romantic or platonic. So to show a good relationship and how it affects people in a drama can be hard, but it’s one of my favorite things to see.
Tears/Sadness: I gotta explain this lol. It’s when the drama presents a story for the characters that I feel like I can relate to in a way or because of something they go through that deeply resonates. My favorite dramas have made me cry at least once (many of them 3+ times) and have made me feel that deep stir in my heart. It’s so real and that makes it even sadder.
Writing/Good Story: As a writer, I want to be able to see something and think ‘Wow. This is amazing and I wish I had thought of it or written it.” Either that or it gets me in the mood to write because I want to be at that level one day. Tbh, it’s hard for me to articulate how I feel a good story should be written. I just feel like I know when I see one in a drama and when I don’t. This also includes good characters: They don’t have to be necessarily likable, but relatable or written in a way that I can understand where they are and follow their path to wherever they end up.
I think have to have all of these together to make it a good drama. So these are a few examples if I couldn’t explain it well enough:
Misaeng; We had Sales Team 3 as well as the Interns which made for a great relationship that we saw progress through the drama. Not much happened, but it was written well and even now, when I write, I think of Misaeng mainly because the tone of my stories go toward that direction in tone. It also makes you feel that stir in your heart, something that hits close to home.
Dear My Friends: Basically the same as Misaeng. The relationship between all the women. It’s peak writing for kdramas as well, imo
H2H: This was not a perfect drama by any means, but it has an amazing otp, there are scenes that tug at my heart (Ep15 when Yi Seok is talking to Hong Do in the office but she doesn’t hear him :( Later in that ep when they see each other after so long and just relax in each other’s arms just !!) Again, this isn’t a perfect story, but it does make me want to write and has flawed characters that I like.
