Beginners guide to Make up!
I’m no expert at make up, but when I first started wearing make up I wish I had more guidance. So I didn’t have those days where I looked really weird with bright lipstick and patchy foundation…Now that there’s YouTube and all these amazing beauty blogs, make up is so much easier. But there are some things you should know when you’re a beginner!
1) Matching your skin tone! Whether it be a lipstick or a foundation, you want it to compliment you not wash you out or not look abnormal. I’ve had days where I’ve bought a lipstick and it just didn’t look right. So make sure you swatch it on your hand or try it on and ask for a friend’s opinion! (hold your swatch up to your face for a rough idea) Or maybe ask someone working at a beauty counter. (They can be wrong sometimes - so your overall opinion counts) Also remember you want something that’ll compliment you. Embrace who you are what ever colour you are.
2) What type of make up do you like or need? Do you like your foundation runny or thick? Or even a powder foundation? These are preferences you should take in to account. I prefer a thicker foundation personally! This all comes from experience so don’t worry, researching a foundation online can be very helpful so do try that. Also trying products, you may not like a runny foundation from one brand but may like it from the other.
3) Your skin type + make up. It’s important to take in to account what type your skin is. Is it oily, dry or combination? So when choosing products you don’t buy something that’ll make you more oily or give dry patches etc. Again research is vital with any product. If you have dry skin you want to go for a creamier (thicker foundation) If you’re oily you want to go for an oil free foundation!
4) Brushes! I feel like if you’re going to experiment with make up you need decent brushes. Now as much as we all love highend brushes I opt for something else. I have a 24 pc Make up brush set which pretty much does everything and anything. I do have a couple of real techniques but you won’t be spending as much! (and ofc my beauty blender which I love) Once you’ve got the hang of things you can opt for whatever. But I’d recommend this to someone starting off or someone who doesn’t wanna spend much. (The quality is amazing for the price)
5) Look at the quality of the product not the company. Often we buy products cos of the brand, but they don’t live up to expectation, I may be repeating myself here. But you want to check reviews, not just one. Many. Also don’t give in to hype of products so quickly, just cos a product works for someone else doesn’t mean it’ll do the same for you. And vice versa. We’re all different.
6) Concealer! You only want to go a shade or two lighter than your foundation colour. (Unless for highlighting purposes) You don’t want your under eye area looking too light and abnormal.
7) Practice! If you can’t perfect your winged eyeliner or your eye shadow or whatever. Practice. It isn’t impossible, we all started off not being perfect at make up but as you keep doing it you get better at it.
8) Don’t wear too much or for too long! Remember wearing make up excessively isn’t good for your skin, you want your skin to be bare too sometimes. If you don’t need your make up on, take it off. (even if it’s fleeky a f.)
9) Don’t let anyone put you down. If you’d like to wear make up, go for it. Don’t let people stop you by saying it’s not ‘real’ or it’s ‘deceiving.’ In reality you should love your skin with and without make up. Even if you have acne, or any other skin condition. Look good for you gurl.
10) Ask a friend who knows about make up, take that friend shopping with you. That way you have a second opinion, it can be your sister, your mum or your Aunt. If you’re confused ask someone who’d give you the right advice to suit your needs. And if you don’t have anyone to ask, research online! Google swatches, reviews and such.
