There are a couple of reasons, the main one is that  Busytown is a pretty costume-heavy show: 14 wigs, over 50 quick changes and all the pieces that go along with those costumes (fat pads, shoes, etc.). With all of those items, our wardrobe crew member (there is only 1) has her hands full. 

Backstage set up is pretty precise for this show because of how quickly it moves and all of the changes that need to happen backstage -- it would take more time for someone to walk me through presets than for them to actually do it, so I sit in the office and take care of our wigs.

Since changes happen so quickly, wigs get taken off fast and forgotten about even faster. they get to lookin' pretty rough even after one show. They need the love.

And that, makingcostumes, is why I am doing wig maintenance. :)
