സോപ്പ് - soppu (soap) is not only a product you use to clean your body, but it is also a person who is proficient in the art of flattery or buttering up. It often has a negative connotation, similar to 'suck up'. In the scene, Sreenivasan's character is trying to butter up his wife. He had sold her gold unbeknownst to her and is now trying his best to ease her anger. However, she sees through his charade and scoffs 'ഹോർലിക്സ് കൊണ്ട് സോപ്പ് ഇടാൻ വന്നിരിക്കാണു - Horlicks kondu soppu idan vannirikkanu' (Hmph! Trying to suck up to me with Horlicks!) Other usage: ഭയങ്കര സോപ്പാ - bhayangara soppa He/she is a huge suck up. സാറിനെ പോയി സോപ്പടിക്കട്ടെ - Saarne poi soppuadikate Let's go butter up sir. അധികം പതപ്പിക്കല്ലേ - adhikam pathapikalle is a phrase used by the person who is being flattered or sucked up to. It literally means 'don't lather me up too much'. However, in this context, it means 'don't suck up too much'. Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala is a brilliant story about how a housewife survives, thrives despite her deadbeat husband's abandonment. In the end, (Spoiler!) she takes him back. The time period the story is set definitely played a part in the ending, we wonder how the story would have ended differently if it were set today. Fanfic anyone?
