not to teen titans post on main but this is my city now. anyways i think it's absolutely fucking crazy that i've never seen anyone parallel the raven and malchior dynamic to the arella and trigon dynamic because they're eerily similar to a horrifying degree. raven was manipulated into nearly the exact same trap her mother was manipulated into (ie gaslit and groomed by a person (multiple people in arella's case but semantics) into thinking they're something of value and loved and cared for and seen only to flip the switch completely the Second what they Actually wanted was within reach).
like i remember rewatching spellbound semi-recently and being fucking HORRIFIED because malchior followed the abusive partner/friend dynamic to a fucking T - listening to raven's concerns/qualms and saying all the right things to ease her while also isolating her from her friends (and also feeding her insecurities that they don't actually care about her/are scared of her), teaching her dangerous magic all the while downplaying its effects and also giving her something completely novel to her so she's less likely to pick up on that danger, purposefully allowing raven to open up and trust him, blatantly lying about his identity/motives. do i have to continue this guy fucking sucks. arella's backstory is nonexistent in the show but i think it's safe to assume it's generally the same comic-inspired background? (ie ran from abusive foster homes, fell into a cult after experiencing heavy religious trauma, and manipulated into the whole "bride of satan" thing) and with that assumption - yea, everything malchior did is almost definitely whatever cult arella fell into would've had to have done to gaslight her into joining because that's how cults get people to join them - isolate your victim from everything around them (or find someone that's already isolated), and the slightest crumb of acceptance starts to look like literal paradise, of course arella joined them. did the writers mean for this parallel to be there? maybe not but i honestly wouldn't be surprised. it's still a complete gut-punch to think about - for all that azarath tried to train raven they failed to raise her in a way that treated her like A Human Person, and that directly led to raven making nearly the exact same set of decisions that led her mother to azarath in the first place. that's terrifying. hello. is this mic on can anyone hear me. hello.
vex/malchior // stuttering
I know this is messed up but….
Idk, i think that scene made me like Kit cuz I grew up with these kinda fictional relationships/friendships if you wanna refer to them as that…. Sorry for my weirdness
It only turned out good for them tho
Saw your tags under one of my arts of Malewife Manwhore Maleficent dragon bastard and a) thank you uuwuu and b) shaking your hand so so hard because "Spellbound" had lodged itself in my brain like a blood clot in an artery all the way back in 2004 and it literally hasn't left for over 2 decades.
Kiddo me was SO salty that the big awesome black & purple book dragon wasn't befriendable and that the white-haired magical prettyboy wouldn't join the crew and she spent years being quietly bitter about it all the while respecting and understanding the moral of the episode and the importance of it for young introverted geeky fantasy-obsessed teenage girls like me yadda yadda yadd- THEY FUCKING ROBBED ME OF A BOOKWYRM IN MY FAVOURITE CARTOON!!!
Long story short, sometime last year I realised that I'm a writer and artist and can do whatever the fuck I want with these characters, including fanfic, art, AUs, and making Malchior and Rorek twins before Mal girlbossed too close to the sun with the dark magic and turned himself into a dragon - both for the drama and so that they can both be this pretty when he's not wearing scales.
So yeah. If you like what I've cooked, take comfort in knowing that I've made more, I have more marinating in my head (two decades' worth of repressed brainrot) and if I manage to wrangle my executive dysfunction into compliance, there might be more of it hitting the relevant TT tags at one point or another.
LISTEN I JUST THINK THEY'RE NEAT.
Yu Gi Oh ass characters
on a more serious note I did for REAL love their designs and there is so much you can do with them. I especially love the professional rage baiter x professionally rage baited dynamic myself. (they're so Flins and Rerir to me)
I never put a TON of thought into them the way I did hive characters (there were only so many brain cells available) but I did always like the idea that they were either brothers who strayed to different paths or scorned lovers of some kind (because I just liked the twist on the knight/dragon trope. and the old man yaoi is fun it introduces a lot of self loathing which manifests as resentment for Rorek and it opens a lot of other doors as well).
But yeah fr there are SO many places you could take them. I think I especially like the idea that either A) they are both trapped in the book somehow, Malchior will never know peace, or B) Malchior is trapped in the book and Rorek is still functioning as some immortal inter-dimensional being (in a Dr. Fate kind of way). Mostly because I like the idea of these two extremely out of date beings suddenly being forced into present day. I love -old man confidently trying to navigate present day- tropes it's always very funny to me. (Raven: ok ok you can do this you CAN navigate a city I believe in you. Just take a left on that crosswalk past the tower- Malchior: he doesn't know what a crosswalk is. Rorek: I do not know what a crosswalk is :) )
But yeah same like I DO recognize the point of the Spellbound plot and why it was an important message for young girls (especially during a time plots like that really didn't show up for that demographic elsewhere, and in a time it was so prevalent) but like did you have to make them so interesting??? did you have to leave so many weird little crumbs about whether Malchior is even SUPPOSED to be a dragon??? They're so weird and interesting they're definitely in my basket of blorbos
The character Malchior/Rorek from Teen Titans is a hidden gem in character design, not gonna lie.
I kinda wish there was some way he could return to the DC Universe in some shape or form, like how Neil Gaiman can revive a forgotten golden age character like Prez for a single chapter in an extended story.
If Nick Fury can get a son just so they can make him look more like Samuel L. Jackson, Rorek can be revived as wizard who is also a dragon...
"There's just one more ingredient. A lock of hair from a beautiful girl."
