well i think that they're literally the best dynamic in the show though !! it's fleshed out more in the book but aside from malcolm being a vile predator who raped his stepmom (and with his daughter being the result of that rape), his disturbing obsession with corrine stems from his own psychological trauma of being abandoned by his mom (whom he came to deeply resent). his desperate need to have a daughter also comes from his desire to create a reincarnation (or a substitute) of the woman he fixated on and who ended up leaving him. that's why he named his daughter corrine, the same name as his mother. his all consuming obsession and resentment toward his mother manifest in his relationship with his daughter. she becomes the living embodiment of both his sexual assault and his illicit feelings. while he's twistedly possessive and doting toward her (like quickly forgiving every transgression) none of this is rooted in paternal affection but more like driven by a dark psychological need to possess and control a version of the mother who rejected him (traumatic childhood and unhealthy attachment !!) he also genuinely believes his daughter belongs solely to him and him only...
