"David's seen another ghost," Roger did not say to his sister. It wouldn't do any good to tell her; he was half-convinced that Liz believed most of the boy's fanciful stories, on some level. She'd always believed his, after all.

It was only on very late nights when Roger was up working on business correspondence--which he did do, sometimes; he'd never let it be said that he did nothing for the family business--and usually only when he was four brandies in and starting to forget how to spell words of more than three syllables, that his brain relaxed enough to let him access the memories of his own childhood. To let him remember the loneliness, and the fear of his father, and the ghosts.

There had always been so many ghosts in Collinwood.

An old woman who looked as Elizabeth did now, keeping watch over the west wing of the mansion. A young woman with dark hair and sad eyes that he had seen in the wedding photograph his father had kept locked away in a drawer. A little girl at the Old House who he had tried so often to play with as a boy, and never quite succeeded, because they could never quite figure out a game they both enjoyed.

He had told Liz about all of them when he was young. She was the only person he could tell. His father was so often ill, and irritable, and never troubled to hide that he loathed the sight of the son who lived in place of the mother. Roger had been, he knew, in the hidden recesses of his soul (carefully buried under drinking, womanizing, and the casual violence of wealth that couldn't quite be backed up by actions) that he had been as lonely and troubled a child as his own son.

The difference, of course, was that Liz hadn't been able to protect him as she could protect David. Jamison Collins had sent Roger to boarding school at the earliest opportunity, something that Liz had fought against, and failed to sway their father on. Now she was the one controlling the purse strings, and David might as well be her son, rather than Roger's.

A pity he isn't, Roger thought, crossing out the word 'beneficiary' and trying, again, to write it correctly. The cannery's stenographer would be earning her wages tomorrow, that was certain. A great pity he's Laura's instead of Elizabeth's. A great pity he's mine at all.

There had been a brief time (a decade) when he wondered if David wasn't his child. If he was really Burke Devlin's. Part of him had even cherished that thought, even as he'd kept the boy at arm's length. Better for him not to be a Collins. Perhaps he would escape the ghosts. But no... no, the older he got and the odder he became, the more David looked the very image of Jamison Collins as a boy, and gave Roger even more cause to dislike him.

Elizabeth was good for the boy. Elizabeth loved him, understood him, as she had loved and tried to understand her queer little brother. She had always believed Roger's ghost stories. Once, she'd shared one of her own--of their great-aunt Judith getting lost on the beach, and being led home by the ghost of Josette Collins. Elizabeth believed it, she said, because once she had gotten lost on the same beach, and Josette had led her home as well.

She protected the Collins family. She would lead them all home, eventually, or so Elizabeth had told her lonesome little brother.

Roger wasn't so sure anymore. Sometimes he wondered if his entire childhood had been a manufactured memory, something he had conjured up to protect himself from being the cause of his mother's death and his father's slow decline. Sometimes he wondered if he had ever really heard the widows on the cliff. Secretly, he feared he had been hearing them every night of his life.
