Firefly Textpost Meme 153
I feel like there's something to be said for the concept of Jayne being scared of Mal but Simon not being scared of Mal. And it's mostly because while Mal is stern with Jayne, he is very gentle with Simon for no apparent reason once they get the punching out of the way.
Jayne sees Mal as this ruthless intimidating guy who manipulated him so well Jayne probably didn't even realize he'd been poached until he was sitting in his brand new bunk thinking wait a minute, wasn't I the one who had the gun? Mal snaps at him and sends him away from the dinner table like a misbehaving child. He can cow Jayne with a stern look. He demonstrates violence in front of Jayne that clearly scares him and is not afraid to nearly kill him. And Jayne also has context of other smugglers and other crews! The stuff Mal does then must be pretty scary even in the smuggler world and he seems to be able to intimidate contacts without too much trouble.
But to Simon this is a guy who punched him twice and then offered him a safe place to live. Mal praises Simon's quick thinking, tells Simon's bully to knock it off, risks serious legal consequences by hiding him in plain sight, delivers discipline with a gentle hand on his shoulder and a sarcastic smile, lets him bitch and talk back, and teases him but still ensures he's as safe as possible. And Simon has no context, aside from speculation on whatever underground group rescued River, but even that was a secretive group operating in the Core, not Rim smuggling. It would likely be a pretty different culture.
Anyway I think it's funny if Simon doesn't know that he just happens to be liked by a prominent smuggler and instead he thinks that this is the norm. And he doesn't even get a wakeup call when they work with some other smuggler crew because the other crew is like damn this guy talks like he can fight. better not risk it.

DISCLAIMER ☝️☝️‼️‼️‼️☝️☝️‼️‼️‼️☝️‼️ LARGE IMPORTANT MASSIVE DISCLAIMER‼️‼️‼️
This edit is not intended to justify Mal and Jayne's objectively misogynistic/generally shit behaviour, nor is it intended to demonise any women. It aims to explore where that behaviour may come from, not to excuse it. I don't care what they've been through they shouldn't've said that!!! But it's fascinating to explore why they said it, beyond "cishet man largely written by cishet men is misogynistic for shits and/or gigs". Ok disclaimer over enjoy the edit
