For the dream sequence in Species (1995), where Sil fantasizes about mating with a male of her kind, XFX fabricated a male alien suit. The male suit was designed so that it wouldnt give away that ultimately, it was a man in s suit, especially given it would be shot underwater.
Next chapter, whoo! The chapter after this might take a bit, since my birthday is next week and I might be taking a little time off then. I hope you're all enjoying! Now, let's make planetfall and see what the centaurs have planned next. Read part one here and part two here.

The shuttle trembled under your feet as soon as you entered the atmosphere and you clutched the straps of your seat tighter. You didn’t feel particularly secure there, which was because you weren’t particularly secure. The seats had all been designed for centaur body plans, with a flat seat, almost like a bed, with straps for the legs to be secured with. They’d needed to change it around for you, which meant you were strapped on your back on a table that was slightly too small for you with too-loose straps. It was probably secure enough that you weren’t going to get tossed to the ground, but it didn’t make you feel particularly safe.
“Three talcs to landing,” your centaur said, the little translation device buzzing by your ear. You gritted your teeth. ‘Talcs’ were slightly longer than minutes, so it was going to be a little bit before you hit the planet. Your stomach was already swarming with nerves and the violent shaking, which was getting worse by the second, was not helping.
The ship groaned ominously and the shaking started to taper off. The engines groaned, the air pressure went wonky enough to make your ears pop and ache. You could feel the acceleration slowing in the swoop of your stomach and you swallowed back nausea.
Everything went dizzyingly still. Your head swam, your ears still throbbing from the air pressure. How was it these people had invented sustained space flight and were still struggling with air pressure?
The other centaurs around you didn’t seem particularly comfortable either, but they gradually started to walk around, clearing things up as the door in the back of the ship opened. Your centaur walked over and clicked the straps open. “Doing all right?”
“Define ‘all right,’” you muttered. Your centaur made a sympathetic noise.
“I don’t like the landing, either,” he said. “Can you stand?”
Mostly just to prove you could, you shoved yourself upright. It was a little dizzying, but you’d been doing better with things like ‘standing’ and ‘being functional,’ so it wasn’t awful. Your centaur made a pleased little trilling noise.
As soon as you felt stable enough to do so, you headed toward the door with your centaurs. It scrolled open and you squinted in the blinding light of the sun. It was the first time you’d seen actual sunlight in… in how long? You weren’t even sure how long you’d been on The Ship, now that you thought about it. It could be hundreds of years. It could be thousands.
You were shocked out of your melancholy thoughts by the sound of intense chattering, thumping, popping, and other noises you recognized as hallmarks of the centaur language. It was hard to see beyond the brilliance of the sun, but the noise alone indicated there was a crowd.
Your centaur guided you out into the light and your adjusting eyes revealed what you already thought was the case: there were a lot of centaurs. It wasn’t the biggest crowd you’d ever seen before, but there was a fair amount, and as soon as they caught sight of you, they surged forward. A group of centaurs wearing what looked like dark green uniforms waved the crowd back, some of them making almost aggressive gestures when members of the crowd tried to surge forward. You pulled back against your centaur automatically and his tail came forward to swing around you in a defensive gesture.
Right in the front of the crowd was an enormous centaur, the biggest you’d ever seen- not by a big margin, but still. But their horns were the biggest by a decent margin, stretching back from their head so far you wondered how they actually managed to get their head through their clothes. They had to be several inches long. They were holding two long, lacquered and brightly colored, sticks in their arms, though when you saw them step forward, you realized what the sticks were- they were crutches.
They made their way forward slowly, other people parting with respect. Even the crowd seemed to calm down, like they were embarrassed to be acting up in front of this well-respected centaur.
“Ma’am,” your centaur said. He drew himself up as soon as she started approaching. He recognized her, but you couldn’t be sure if he knew her because he knew her or if he just knew of her.
“Hello,” she said, barely looking at him before her gaze swapped to you. Her eyes, dark as the night, bored into you. You felt the urge to straighten your spine. “You’re the new species.”
“Uhhh.” You glanced at your centaur. “Y- yes, ma’am.”
She lowered herself further to stare directly into your face. You blinked back into her dark, fathomless eyes. “Good to meet you,” she said after a moment. “I’m Celebration.”
More of those weird centaur names. You give her yours. She nods slowly, then turns away, her tail curling behind her. “Come, then. We have much to discuss.”
You and your centaur followed her as she stepped through the crowd. They seem mostly mollified by her presence, although a smaller centaur, one you assumed was relatively young, abruptly lunged forward and made to grab at your hair.
The reaction was immediate. They snagged only the cloth of your sleeve, but it was startling enough that you yelped and instantly tried to pull away. Your centaur lunged, baring his teeth- they were bigger than you had realized, with the canines on the bottom wickedly sharp. The centaur that had grabbed you jumped back, making a noise that was either frightened or amused, and as soon as they lost their grip on you, some of the uniformed centaurs closed in, hauling them off. You clutched at your arm where the centaur had grabbed- you hadn’t been hurt, but the entire experience had been unsettling.
“Come on,” your centaur said, ducking his head close to you so he could speak in a quiet, soothing voice. “We have to go, okay?” You stumbled along as he ushered you along. He’d been quite close before, but after the attack, his body language is highly protective.
It wasn’t much longer before you managed to escape the crowd and stepped into what resembled a cross between a bus and a car. It was smaller than a bus, but it had the same sort of tall, rectangular structure. The steering wheel was also designed more the like yoke used to steer a ship, and was positioned more centrally than the steering wheel on the busses you knew.
There were no seats. Apparently centaurs could lock their legs, like horses, and they would then be latched onto the floor by shoe-like structures, so their feet didn’t slide when the bus moved. Naturally, there were no straps that fit you, so you just held onto your centaur as the bus rolled out.
The scenery that rolled by was fascinating. Admittedly, you weren’t a botanist, so you couldn’t really tell most of the plants apart, but there were flashes of animals that definitely looked different from creatures on Earth. There were tiny, scaled creatures that zipped and darted around in the sky almost like birds or miniature Pteranodons. Sometimes you caught sight of a strange, moose-like creature reaching up to pull the branches of a tree down toward its muzzle with a hooved hand. There was even a lean, foxlike creature that slipped out from the undergrowth in pursuit of a smaller creature that was difficult to see. It snapped out a clawed forelimb, puncturing the creature in a single motion, then skittered away once more. Apparently this wasn’t a common sight, because your centaur murmured with excitement when he spotted it.
“Volk,” he said when you asked what it was called. “They’re shy creatures, and they don’t come near civilization often. But they’re signs of good fortune when they do- they hunt almost exclusively pest animals.”
Good fortune. You could use a little of that. Hopefully the rumors about such a creature were right.
The ride wasn’t long, thankfully, and it ended at a massive building. The entire thing seemed to be constructed of wood and some clear substance that resembled glass, but wasn’t- it looked too matte and didn’t catch the light correctly. It was quite low to the ground, as were the few other buildings surrounding it, and used primarily rounded edges in its design as opposed to the hard, rectangular angles you were used to. Or, had been used to, before The Ship. Everything had been rounded there. All the better to fly through space with.
You winced. The Ship. The rest of The Ship, more accurately. There were other people out there. Not people you knew, but other people regardless. You needed to find them. If these people were supposed to be saving endangered species, then certainly they’d want to find more of your kind, right? It wasn’t like you could reproduce on your own. Without any other humans, you’d be… You’d be…
You didn’t want to dwell too much on that thought.
“Are you all right?” Your centaur nudged your side with one of his arms and you startled. You’d been walking through the building on autopilot, and completely missed when everyone else turned.
“Yes,” you said, hurrying back to his side. “I was just thinking.”
Celebration (it was weird to think of that as her name- sort of My Little Pony-esque) stopped in front of a room and gestured for you to go inside. You hesitated. The entire thing was about the same size as a walk-in closet, much deeper than it was wide. There looked to be about standing room for one centaur in there. “You want me to get in there?” you asked, apprehension making your voice pitch upward. “Why? What is it?”
“It’s a shower,” Celebration said, matter-of-factly. You gaped for a moment, then practically bolted inside. A shower! A real, actual, water-based shower and not the ‘cleaning gel’ that just kind of sloughed the dirt off your skin and made you feel sticky for ages afterward no matter how well you toweled off.
“Take off your clothes and press the button here to start it. It will run on a natural cycle, so there’s no need to touch anything else.” Celebration leaned back and started to talk with your centaur, but the translation bot had already drifted out of the chamber and before you could even tell it to come back, the door was sliding shut.
The enticement of a good shower didn’t let you dwell on that discomfort for long. You stripped, pressed the button on the wall and waited.
There was a humid mist, then nozzles inserted in the walls sprayed jet streams of water at you. It was a little more powerful than you’d expected it- the water made you stumble for a second before you could properly brace yourself against it. It also wasn’t just water- your nose picked up on a slight chemical scent to the air, and when you rubbed the water into your body, it foamed a little. After a couple of minutes, the soapy water petered out. A moment later, it was replaced with another jet of clear water, which rinsed you off. You felt great you’d been shaved before going into the pod. The only hair on your body was short, so it didn’t take much effort to wash.
Eventually, the water clicked off again. You had a couple of seconds to spit excess water out of your mouth before there was a low whirr. Fans kicked on and you threw your hands over your face as the air blasted you dry. It wasn’t comfortable, like being trapped in a hair dryer, but it did get you dry quite efficiently.
The shower went silent, except for one of the nozzles gently dripping water. It was quite humid in there, with condensation still clinging to the walls. You walked over to the door and pressed your hand to it. There was no knob. How were you supposed to open it?
You glanced around the room. There was only the little button that had started the shower, not any other ones that might open a door. Hell, the shower wasn’t even particularly well-lit. You could barely see the outline where the door was.
What the fuck. Had they trapped you in there?
Your first instinct was to pound on the door, but the instant your hand met the hard metal surface, you yelped in pain. It hurt. You hadn’t even hit it that hard- had the hibernation made your body weaker overall. You considered kicking the door instead, but you couldn’t imagine it would go any better, and it would be hard to walk on a broken foot.
Despite the little rectangle being quite warm, you started to shiver. You were alone. Trapped in this little space. What were you going to do? Why had you even gotten into this damn square in the first place? For all you knew, the shower had been a trick and within a moment the nozzles were going to spray you with an anesthetic and you were going to be dragged off to be dissected and analyzed and, if you were lucky, put into a zoo, and if not-
The door scrolled open and your little translator drone zipped in just ahead of your centaur. He blinked at you. “Are you all right? I head a bang-”
You slammed into his chest before you consciously realized you were running toward him. He didn’t stumble, but he swayed a little with the movement. One of his arms came up a little awkwardly to mimic the hold you had on him. Did centaurs even hug, usually? He was at least trying. That was nice.
“Are you all right?” The little clicking and thumping noises he made were almost louder than the translated voice the robot offered. “Did you get hurt?” He gently pried me off of him, or at least tried to. His arms seemed to be weaker than human arms, and his wrists lacked the same mobility, so he couldn’t get a good grip.
“I’m okay,” you said, letting go of him. He glanced you over, clearly trying to check if you weren’t really injured, and you abruptly became aware that you still weren’t wearing anything. And you had hugged him. Whoops. “I, uh. Couldn’t open it from the inside. I panicked a little.”
“They automatically release,” he said. “These ones are older, so the release is a bit slower.”
“Oh.” You felt ridiculous. You had panicked over an automatic door. In a desperate effort to save face, you changed the topic. “Where’s the other lady? Uhh. Celebration, that was her name, right?”
“Celebration?” There was a bit of a pause and your centaur’s face scrunched a little. Crap, was that not her name? Was forgetting a name extremely poor etiquette here? If it was, you were so fucked, you couldn’t remember anything ever.
“Oh,” your centaur said abruptly, like he’d finished whatever internal conversation he’d been having. “I see. Yes, Celebration, then. She’s gone ahead to speak to some of the other leadership. I’m supposed to bring you to them.”
You shuffled a little. “Do I get clothes before that?”
He laughed a little. “They only transported some of your clothes here, but I’m sure we can find something that’ll fit.”
He took you to a small room packed with transport boxes. You recognized them- they were made of the same space-safe material as everything else on The Ship. Your centaur popped one open and offered the box to you. It was packed tight with an assortment of clothes- mostly the same standard hospital-gown like stuff, but there was warm weather gear when you dug a little deeper, and even a few normal t-shirts and shorts. You chose that outfit, since the planet had been warm when you’d been outside. It was nice to have an upgrade from the hospital gown you’d been wearing around.
Once you were dressed, your centaur let you explore the rest of the boxes. There were boxes of spare parts, farming tools, medical supplies- most of the stuff you’d expected on the ship. There was only one noticeable absence.
“Where’s the seed crate?” There was a crate in each section of the ship that was more or less the pod version of a crate. It kept all the seeds in a carefully climate-controlled box to keep them preserved, so even if we landed on a mostly-deserted planet, we could still terraform it with plants we had. There had been a desire to do that for the animals of earth, as well, but there had been no good way for reviving them from DNA once we landed, and we couldn’t spare the space for all the live animals we would need to keep the species alive.
“It was kept up there.” Your centaur pointed toward the ceiling. Still in space, probably. “It was kept there for quarantine- We don’t want potentially invasive seeds hitting out planet. It’s more likely they’ll be harmless than harmful, but there have been records of only a few accidental seed releases destroying ecosystems on other planets.”
That was sensible enough. The seeds could last in stasis for a long time, and maybe they would eventually come across a planet that could support them.
Your centaur’s clothes beeped and he pulled a small, thick device from his pocket and glanced at it. “Oh.” He tapped his foreleg nervously against the ground. “Hm. It seems they’re ready for us.”
“Ready for us?” Your centaur turned toward the door, gesturing for you to follow him with his tail.
“The council. They want to talk to us. Well, to you.” He glanced back to me. “We don’t want to keep them waiting.”
“Right.” You followed him, almost tripping over your own legs in your anxiety. You were about to speak to some ‘council’ that was going to decide your fate. Maybe even the fate of humans in general, if they decided to abandon the ship. Your heart felt like it was pounding out of your chest and swelling to constrict your throat at the same time.
Your centaur led you through the building to a large doorway. He paused, giving one final glance back at you, before stepping forward and, without so much of a knock, opening the door.
Maybe it had been melodramatic, but you’d been expecting a large, shadowy room, maybe with large, court like furniture to complete the aesthetic. It was not that. In fact, the room was a little more like a sunroom combined with a nice meeting room. There was a lot of sunlight from the massive windows set in the roof, there were a few pillows, cushions, and other soft objects scattered around the room, and the centaurs milling around all seemed relaxed and cheerful. It wasn’t quite the intimidating scene you’d expected.
As you and your centaur entered the room, several people looked over at you. They expressions were nakedly curious. Celebration, the only centaur you recognized out of all of them, drew herself up and made loud thumping noises, pulsing them from deep in her chest. The other centaurs dropped what they were doing and gathered close. Your centaur guided you to the middle of the room, then backed away. You glanced at him, worried, and he gave you a reassuring look.
“I’m glad you’re here,” Celebration said. “I’m certain you have much that you’d like to ask us, but I think I will start with our most pressing concern first: How do we ensure your continued safety and health?”
You stayed silent for a moment before you realized the question was not rhetorical. “You’re asking me?”
“You would be the person who would have the best knowledge of such a thing,” Celebration said. “We would like for you to be able to express your needs here.”
“Then…” What did you need most? The answer came to your head with surprising ease. “Then we need to find the rest of the humans. The ones in the part of The Ship that wasn’t destroyed. That’s what will help me.”
There was a pause. It hadn’t been the answer they were expecting, you were sure of that. Celebration turned to murmur something to the centaur next to her, who pricked their ears in interest. The translator didn’t pick any of that conversation up. You turned to see your centaur’s gaze. He gazed back encouragingly.
Celebration turned back to you. “The search for the remainder of your ship is already underway. It is highly recommended that you do not participate in it, however. Your status as the only member of your species currently living means you are in a delicate position. We cannot allow the risking of your life for this- and scrolling for lost ships in unknown space is always dangerous. That is not a risk we are willing to take.”
“Not a risk you’re willing to take?” The words practically exploded out of you. “It’s my life! It’s a risk I’m willing to take! What’s even the point of protecting me as the last of my species if I can’t get to the other members? I’ll just die out in, I don’t know, forty to fifty years. Without other humans, there’s no point.”
“You life is more valuable than you give yourself credit for. Even as an endling, you still retain great knowledge of your own species, of your customs, of things that are unique to you. Even if we never find the rest of your species, you are still valuable and we do not want you to die.” You squeezed your eyes shut, trying to block the tears that were welling up. “Of course, we understand you want to seek out members of your own species. I am sorry that you cannot do that. But it is dangerous and you are too valuable to do so. We will do our best to bring them to you as soon as possible. We promise.”
You gritted your teeth, stiffened your shoulders, and stared down at the ground. You didn’t speak. You were going to cry if you spoke. And you did not want to cry in front of all these strange aliens.
Celebration shifted her weight between all her legs. Clearly this was making her uncomfortable. Good. You felt some bitter satisfaction. “We would like your input on what would make you feel more comfortable while you’re staying here.” Her voice was gentle. You clenched your fists.
“I told you already what would make me more comfortable.” Your voice was tight with your efforts not to cry. “I don’t know of anything else.”
There was long pause. Celebration rumbled quietly, though her expression was unreadable and there was no translation to help you out. She turned and spoke quietly to the centaur next to her. Finally, she turned back to you. Her voice was softer than you expected it to be. “Very well. We will continue our efforts to bring your people back to you. In the meantime, you’ll be staying here. We will provide you with room and food until we can set up your own home for you to stay in. Materials will be translated and provided to you for you to learn about our culture and way of life in this community. You may ask us for anything you wish, as long as it makes your stay more comfortable. We will be working to make your area as comfortable for a human as we can.”
You nodded once. Your eyes still had that heavy, overly full feeling, like you were going to cry at any moment and you didn’t want to. You didn’t want to cry in front of them.
There was a long pause, like maybe she was waiting for you to add something else. She rumbled softly when you didn’t say anything else. “Grove-peace.” You blinking in confusion before your centaur stepped forward, head lowered. “You will continue seeing to the human’s needs, yes?” He lowered his head and bent his forelimbs in a show of submission. “Please, do so.”
Your centaur trotted over to you, placing his body between yours and the other centaurs of the counsel. But he didn’t push you along like you thought he was going to. Instead, he stood by your side, like he was waiting for your signal. A few of the other centaurs murmured and rumbled to each other, maybe in irritation, but despite his ears folding back against his head, he didn’t move. Finally, you gathered yourself enough to move forward and waved at him to do the same.
He trotted ahead of you as you left the room, taking the lead to guide you along the half to what was presumably your room. He was patient even when you came to a stop a few times to calm your wobbly breathing.
“I’m sorry,” he said to you as you headed deeper into the facility. You bit your lower lip as the stinging tears welled up again. You didn’t want to cry. “I… I wish there was something I could do. You’re right, it’s not fair that you can’t go with them to look for your people. I know why you can’t but…” He trailed off, shaking his head. “I’m sorry.”
You didn’t say anything, and he didn’t try to start a conversation after that. He just kept his gaze locked forward as he walked.
Eventually, you came across a room. It was prettier than the rooms you’d been allowed on the spaceships you’d been on. The walls were made of a dark brown wood, with tiny splashes of green and deep blue. The bed was clearly designed for a centaur, and presumably an injured one at that, since it was larger than you needed. But you didn’t mind. You crawled into it, barely sparing a glance at the other parts of the room. You wanted to sleep.
Your centaur, Grove-peace, you needed to remember that, padded across the room, silently inspecting things. You could hear him shift a few things around, examining things from all angles. Half of you wanted to tell him to just get out, to leave you alone. The other half wanted him to stay, almost desperately so. Please, I don’t want to be alone, I don’t want to, why am I alone, how can I not be alone ever again-
You curled further into your bed, burying your face in the blankets and squeezing them to your chest like a stuffed animal. Tears dripped down your face, smearing against the cloth you’d buried yourself in. It was smothering but you couldn’t bring yourself to leave.
It took some time, but eventually, you fell asleep. It wasn’t a restful sleep- in fact, you felt far more exhausted when you woke up than when you fell asleep. Your mouth was dry and sticky and a heavy lump of nausea swirled in your stomach. You unburied yourself, the cool air pleasant against your overheated skin. The room, small enough that you could see all corners of it from the bed, was empty. You couldn’t tell if you were okay with that or not.
There was a slightly-ajar door across the room leading to what you assumed was a bathroom. It was probably a good idea to go there. Relieve yourself, get a drink of water, even if you had to slurp it up straight from the tap. But you couldn’t get your body to move. Even relieving physical needs wasn’t enough motivation to get out of bed. Maybe you could stay in there forever.
Time was like a thick sludge- it slipped by slowly, in clumps, indeterminate in length. There was no clock in the room. Or maybe there was, but it just wasn’t recognizable as one. You shivered under the covers of the bed. Was the room cold, or was it just you? Your fingertips felt oddly tingly and numb.
There was a hiss-click noise and the door opened. Grove-peace trotted inside. His expression was weary, though when he saw you staring at him, he perked up a little. He was carrying a bag looped over one of his arms. “There you are. Did you just wake up?” He trotted closer and locked his legs next to the bed. “I brought you food- sorry, the meeting went on and I had to go back for a little while. They’re looking for a place to get you set up with a home- a real home, not just staying here. They’ll probably be asking after you for your preferences in a few days, seeing if you want to live close to a town or a city or more on your own, but I said they should let your rest for now.” He took in another breath, to continue, then let it out in a sigh. “Ah, sorry. I’m rambling, and it’s late. You must be starving.” He offered you a few of the dried food rations. “I got you some options.”
You picked up one of the fruit and nut bars. It wasn’t like a granola bar- it was more like a slurry of fruit and nuts mixed together and dried into a jerky-like stick. Very chewy, but sweeter than anything of the other dried options you had. Barely even bothering to sit up, you unwrapped half the bar and crammed it into your mouth.
It was weird- it didn’t taste any different than normal. It wasn’t stale (if such things could go stale, since they’d never been fresh in the first place) and it wasn’t rotten (again, if such things could become rotten). But it tasted like ash on your tongue and swallowing it was like swallowing pebbles. Your throat convulsed around it like your body wasn’t sure whether to accept or reject it.
Grove-peace watched you, ears drawn back. “Are you all right?” His voice pitched anxiously and he fumbled through the bag. “Here, have some water.”
You swallowed a few sips. The water didn’t taste bad, either, maybe a bit too hard. But it was still an effort just to get it through your mouth and throat. Grove-peace’s ears ticked anxiously. He plied you with a few more bites of food, but you didn’t eat. You couldn’t bring yourself to.
He ran a hand along your head. There was a tremble to his fingers. “I’m going to go get a doctor, okay? I’ll be right back.”
His footsteps headed toward the door. They were significantly faster than when he’d come in.
As it turns out, ‘get a doctor’ had been sort of an understatement. Because he ended up getting several doctors. And there were a couple others milling around outside the room, like they were just waiting for a chance to come in and inspect you as well. The poking and prodding wasn’t significantly invasive, and you couldn’t bring yourself to resist. You let them roll you over, scan you with machines, compare all of them against whatever data they’d gathered from The Ship. Eventually, they came to some kind of conclusion and most of them filtered out of the room, probably to go fight over who got to be the primary care doctor for the fun new species. Grove-peace and another doctor stayed in the room and spoke quietly to one another for a moment. Grove-peace seemed upset, but you couldn’t make out what they were saying. The translator hovered next to you, apparently uninterested in helping you out. Not that it really mattered what they were saying. Know it or not, you clearly didn’t have much of a say in what happened to you.
The last doctor left after a while of a quasi-arguing with Grove-peace. Once the door closed, he swayed on his paws, scrubbing at his face with a wrist. He looked tired, now that I was getting a proper glance at him. His legs wobbled and he had to quickly correct his posture before he fell over a couple of times. It was a bit late, wasn’t it? How long had the doctors been here for? You hadn’t been really paying attention.
“You should go home,” you said from under the pile of blankets you were housed in. He started, glancing over his shoulder at you. Maybe he hadn’t been expecting you to be awake.
He trotted over to the bedside and folded his legs in a kneel. “I think I’ll stay for a bit longer,” he said. “If you don’t mind.” He looked at you, waiting for your answer. Huh. He was really asking. If you didn’t want him to stay, he wouldn’t.
“No,” you said, letting your eyes drift shut. “You can stay.”
The room was a little more peaceful with him around, after all.
Mech’s not sure why the aftermath of this mission is hitting him so hard, but he’s doing his best to calm down when Gwen’s presence shatters his control. Now it’s a count down to see if he can figure out how to put a stop to the instincts and hormones that are running wild inside him—before he does something they’ll both regret.

“Who else could it be? There’s no one—” He shakes his head and glares at her, unable to help himself. “There’s only you. Always you.”
Her eyes are wide as she looks at him, genuine shock evident. “Mech…”
The silence that echoes through the room is deafening, even the vents seem subdued in the wake of Mech’s most recent confession.
It’s only broken when the synthesizer machine beeps, signaling that the compound has been mixed and is ready for use. Mech darts over to it with speed. It’s not going to do enough, he already knows that based on the limited ingredients he has on hand, but it should stabilize the reaction and ideally shorten the duration.
He refuses to think about anything but the chemistry as he dully loads the dose into a syringe. Shame and fear has crystallized into a shield against the lust raging through his blood that’s proving surprisingly effective. How could he have told her how much he—the sharp prick of the needle as it enters his skin cuts into his train of thought and he lets it. He immediately sets the machine to rigging up another dose. He won’t be able to take it for twelve hours, but hopefully G—hopefully, it can be brought to him wherever he’s isolated.
The diagnostic machine buzzes next and he dutifully walks back over to where it’s been compiling a list of least dangerous medical concoctions to simply knock him out cold. Given how today has gone, he shouldn’t be surprised that nothing has a particularly high chance of either success or safety. As much as he hates this situation, he’s not quite at the level of self-destructive to truly consider taking most of these. Even if he wishes for nothing more than to stop thinking since the ground hasn’t managed to swallow him up.
Movement out of the corner of his eyes causes him to turn sharply. Gwen’s been silent since she said his name in that quietly devastated tone in reaction to his confession. Now he sees she’s taken a step closer for some gods forsaken reason out of her self imposed corner.
“Stay back,” he hisses even as she walks even closer. And gods, is this dose even doing anything? He swears her scent is heavier, more enticing—richer and more appealing in every way. It reaches him with no trouble despite the vents still pulling air out and away from him and her downwind. She looks even more beautiful, her eyes dark and her blue skirt fluttering around her enticingly. “I told you.”
“Hush,” she chides gently. She walks even closer, with a look in her eyes he can’t fathom. Her hair dances in the breeze too, looking thick and touchable, her figure inviting him to see how soft her skin likely is, to imagine it yielding to–
Frantically, he reaches for outrage or worry or anything other than arousal in reaction to her approach. Where is her sense of self-preservation? He backs up, spines hitting the door behind him. “Do you want to leave?” he asks, grasping at straws. Why wouldn’t she say so? They could find some way to shift around the room while maintaining proper distance. He’s told her what state of his mind is. She can’t expect him to understand what she wants from him when his instincts have such a strong hand on the controls of his imagination. He doesn’t understand what’s happening.
“Do you want me?” she asks, her eyes intent as she takes another step closer. “Without all this,” she gestures with her delicate hand in a circle as if to encompass the room or his heightened state, “do you want to be with me?”
There’s no point beating around the bush anymore, is there? Even if he thought he’d been plenty clear before, he supposes she wants to hear it outright. “Yes,” Mech admits, hanging his head because now she knows it's his fault his instincts picked her. If he hadn’t already thought of her like this, when she saw him only as a friend, then maybe this, this break wouldn’t have happened. “For…” He shakes his head, unable to remember when his feelings became something other than platonic. “I don’t know why today pushed me over the edge, but I promise I can get back under control.” He can’t lose her, not from something so abrupt and uncontrollable. “I can,” he insists desperately.
Her face softens and she must feel some sympathy for him. Gwen’s one of the most compassionate people he’s ever met, surely she can forgive him for this. “Oh, Mech, you silly alien.” She steps even closer and before he can react, her hand lands on his cheek. It feels electric, each point of contact. His worry and frustration and shame all war with his hormones with her so close. His claws dig back into the wall, venom pools in his mouth, every nerve and muscle in his body straining for her held in check only by sheer force of will. “I don’t want you to.”
“W-” Her lips on his silence whatever protest he was going to attempt to utter. His whole brain skitters to a halt, unable to do anything except stay perfectly still and process what’s happening with every sense. Her lips are warm and soft, pressed with perfect pressure against his half-open mouth. Was he saying something? Her wonderful, delicious scent envelops him completely until there isn’t anything except Gwen. Her hand on his cheek is the comfort of home and hearth. The little stroke of her thumb on his cheek is everything he’s ever wanted.
This perfect moment is all his raging hormones need to take over. Mech has Gwen pushed up against the door within a second. He splays one hand around her hip, holding tight as his other hand laces with her free hand to pin it to the wall. He sucks her lower lip into his mouth as he presses every inch of his body he can manage to keep her there. The ache of his cock finally has some friction to satiate it. His whole body sings with relief, the itch and pull and desperation blissfully satisfied with the contact with his mate. Or rather, his soon to be mate.
With that thought in mind, he skillfully takes control of the kiss, needing to show her exactly why she should choose him. Why he deserves her regard. He shall prove his worth as a kisser and therefore a lover so she’ll have no doubt in her mind that he should be hers. He can’t resist a more substantial taste of her regardless. Mech slides his tongue carefully and deliberately between her lips to slide against her own. He loses himself in the kiss, in giving and taking in as equal measure as well as he can handle when confronted with the reality of her hot, inviting mouth.
Mech distantly remembers humans' more limited lung capacity and pulls back to trail kisses down her neck, questing for where it meets her shoulder. His jaw opens, fangs dripping and scraping along her heaving body. Gwen whines and pants as he touches her and he never wants to be anywhere else doing anything else ever again. He can only think as far into the future as to picture her with his marks on her and his blood boils with desire.
“Mech…” It’s his own naked wonder at hearing Gwen moan his name that breaks through the haze of lust and hormones and instinct to remind him of exactly what situation they’re in. How nothing he’s ever done with his life would have granted him such bliss.
He wrenches his mouth from hers with all the self-control he likes to pretend he has. Panting, breathing in lungfuls of her scent with her still pressed tight to him nearly undoes that, but he holds fast. He can’t get himself to break from her further, but he just needs her to tell him, needs her to reset the boundaries before he goes too far, before he ruins her and himself in the process.
A puff of fresh air from the vent above allows him to latch back on to his more rational objections. “I don’t need your pity,” he practically spits, doing his best to find something that can force him to back off and salvage their relationship before he’s doomed it with his rash actions and clouded judgment. Luckily, it is an almost sobering thought—the idea of being with Gwen only to have her reveal she put up with his advances solely in an attempt to help him. That would destroy him.
Instead of helping him, Gwen’s eyes flash with incandescent, fierce anger. She shifts in his grip, not letting go or trying to escape his grasp as might be sensible, but to maneuver him where she wants him. She hitches herself up and then grinds down against his thigh now between her legs. She practically growls in relief as the thin skirt she wears and even the thicker fabric of his trousers do nothing to disguise the heat and wetness he feels against him.
“Gwen,” he gasps in true shock even as his body quickly angles his thigh to an even more advantageous position. His instincts are hyper-focused, straining to satisfy his mate in any way she wants him to.
“Does that feel like pity?” she demands, groaning as he moves and tightening her grip on him. “I want you,” she says plainly and everything in him comes to a halt for the second time in a minute. His eyes faintly glowing red ones frantically meet her own. They’re dilated, black swallowing up brown, but her sincerity, the raw honesty in them is crystal clear. “I want you bad. Have done for a while now.”
“Fuck, Gwen,” is all he can manage to almost whine as his mind frantically tries to make sense of the impossible.
She smirks in response, head ducking close to manage a nip at his lower lip and a lick to one of his fangs. Her eyelids flutter at the taste of his venom as she breathes, “Yes, exactly. I need you.”
He can’t help but give her what she asks, what she needs. Why in the universe that's an ornery, suspicious, antisocial bastard like him, he doesn’t know. But he’s lost the will to keep fighting her. He chases after her mouth, his chest an iron wall against her own slighter, softer one. She doesn’t seem to mind being caged in by his hand, still pinned as his thigh has her hips. She just grinds closer, releasing hitching little breaths and moans as his venom mixes with her saliva.
His silvery venom is primarily deadly only on his planet, but plenty of other species have reactions to it. Some it numbs, some it hurts, and others it heals. Humanity seems most varied in their reaction, but his understanding is that it tends to fizzle, to buzz. After all, theirs is a race that poisons itself recreationally, sought out toxic plants for the sting to add to their diet, and regularly ingests powerful drugs most races take in only the smallest of doses. However Gwen’s personal chemistry might feel about it, at least it's nothing terrible enough to break their kiss.
In fact, their kiss only breaks when she runs out of air and tips her head back to breathe. He lets go of her pinned hand, an absent minded extra push before he does to tell her to leave it there, and skims his hand down her flank, strokes across the swell of her stomach. She’s so plush and warm under his fingerpads especially through the cutouts of her dress. His claws snag in the material that does cover her. He can’t retract them. He resists the urge to cut through the fabric still keeping the rest of her lovely skin from him, resists the urge to dig his claws in enough to leave a lasting mark, showing any who might look upon her that she had allowed him the luxurious indulgence of touching her.
It reminds him he still might lose sight of his strength, of everything until it was too late. And Gwen doesn’t deserve this, rutting against the medbay wall while he’s out of his mind. She deserves to be courted and treated and to be laid down reverently in a bed of silk. He should be able to touch her without worrying his darker impulses will overtake him and hurt her. “Not in a sane state of mind to do this right,” he growls out in frustration. His head nuzzles into the crook of her shoulder as even in his irritation he can’t resist the allure of the comfort Gwen offers his soul so effortlessly.
“It's you and me,” Gwen replies, her voice sure, “‘course this is right.” She pulls his face out from where he’s hiding so she can meet his gaze. “You think I don’t know what I’m asking for?” her voice is cajoling and challenging, “I dreamed of you, pressed against me just, like, this.” She punctuates each word with a roll of her hips.
He tries to claw back a hold on his senses. He knows he should, knows no matter her words, Gwen doesn’t know. But she’s intent on wrecking him. “Need you to fuck me now, Mech.”
He snaps his teeth together, baring his fangs as his whole body tenses with the urge to do just that. “Gwen,” his voice is strangled. “For graviels, you don’t know what mating—”
“But I do,” she insists.
“No,” he shakes his head. “You don’t.” He tries desperately to find the words to explain, but there’s only Gwen. His hands clench tighter in the fabric of her dress and he dares not look down for the tears that have to have accompanied the ripping sound. The fabric is no longer covering her well, but hopefully it’s still enough to keep his claws and venom away from her skin. His eyes track a bead of sweat that drips down her neck. He longs to stop it with his tongue. He longs to sink his teeth into where it pools on the curve of her shoulder.
“Yeah, I do.” Gwen finally sounds serious. “I looked it up.” His eyes snap to her own. She raises an eyebrow. “You think I’ve wanted you this long and not investigated what it would be like?” No, he hadn’t. He’d never even thought she might feel the same, might want this too. Had she really done so? He can almost picture her in her bunk, hair twirled around one finger as she scrolls through articles and stories about the rare couplings of human and graviel. He knows they’re out there because he checked too. “How compatible we might be? I want you and all you come with, no matter the scars. Want you so damn much.”
“Gwen.” There’s awe in his voice he can’t control. Even when humans aren’t put off by the venom and how it feels, many are at how it factors into graviel mating. How it seals over the scratches and bites and marks his kind like to leave on their mates, not too deep, but guaranteed to leave permanent marks.
Her only reply is to grind against the thigh still between her legs. His tail winds itself up her leg to stroke her upper thigh before adjusting her to an even more advantageous position. There is a fearsome look on her face, as if she feels like she’s made more than enough allowances for his anxieties and fears. Like she’s done waiting. “Gonna fuck me, Mech?” Her smirk is wicked, the look in her eyes even more so. Her hair is spread in a messy halo around her head, her skin starting to sparkle with sweat, her body never ceasing its movement, its gentle undulation against his own. He’s never seen her eyes look so dark or so appealing. She looks edible. She arches with the motion of her grind and one of her hands reaches blindly behind her, finds the doorpad. “Or do I need to find someone else to?”
Something inside him roars at her direct challenge. Maybe it was more than an internal roar because she shudders in response. There’s triumph in her eyes at his reaction. If she’s aware enough to provoke him… The last piece clicks into place and he finally takes her at her word, That she wants him. He’s got no resistance left.
All he has is a need to make her his in any way he can. In every way he can.
“Mine,” he growls as he takes her mouth in a ferocious kiss, hands already ripping her dress to shreds and stripping her of it. He barely notices her own hands scrambling at his shirt except that the feeling of her hand splayed over his stomach is nearly as euphoric as his hand closing around her breast.
“Wanna mark you,” Mech warns. The urge to properly mark his mate as taken, as his is pure instinct. To leave physical evidence of everything boiling over inside him on her skin is overwhelming.
Gwen’s rucked his shirt up high enough that she can reach up, set her nails to his shoulder blades, and rake her nails down his back. The sharp pressure, the surprising sting of her nails, and lingering feeling of her touch send if possible even more blood rushing to his throbbing cock. He groans, arching into her claim. “Yes. Long as I can mark you too.”
“Perfect,” he says reverently into the skin of her neck where he presses a kiss and sucks a mark. “How are you so—”
Her moan of approval as he begins to knead to soft flesh of her breast under his hand is muffled by his lips back where they belong on hers. He grinds his palm down on her nipple and before long his eyes are fixed on where the claws of that hand just barely scrape against her skin. It becomes pink and sensitive as she squirms under his attention.
His claw finally breaks the skin right over where her heart pounds furiously. A short red scratch that he traces back over, venom running into it. She trembles in his arms with a whine as the cut seals shut, the line a subtle white against her skin. A glance in her eyes, fogged over in pleasure, is all the reassurance he needs. He latches onto her other breast with his mouth, allowing his venom to encase her nipple as he sucks. He twists his grip, claws scraping and healing as he does so around her other breat. Gwen practically screams her pleasure to the ceiling, to the whole damn ship if he’s lucky.
Mech wants everyone to know Gwen is getting the pleasure she deserves nearly as much as he wants them to know he’s the one giving it to her. He brings his fangs down to bear, gazing and abrading her soft soft skin. Gwen whimpers. He’d be concerned if the sound wasn’t also accompanied by the wet slick against his thigh increasing.
Her hands scrabble at his back and her head thunks against the door as she arches, pressing her chest into him with another gasp of his name.
The sound galvanizes him. Somehow finally giving into his desires has helped the fog in his brain caused by this hormonal snap clear. The door isn’t going to let him ravish her the way he craves. He doesn’t want to be distracted by keeping her held up against it when there are far better things he could be focusing on.
He reluctantly lets go of her breast to grip at her hips again with both hands. She whines when he lets go of her tender nipple with his mouth to trail up to her shoulder. Her whole body tenses when the threat of his fangs are brought to bare, like she’s holding her breath. Still she doesn’t do anything more than whimper when he removes his damp thigh from between her legs, hanging pliantly in his firm hold.
Gwen’s fingers wind their way into his hair, firm but not tugging in protest—yet. Before she can ask about the sudden stop to the way she’d been grinding herself to some sort of peek, he pulls her off the wall with a grunt. Lifting his head to remind himself of what exactly he’s working with in the medbay, he strides over to the bed in the center of the room where Gwen had been sitting only twenty minutes ago, distracting him while he tried in vain to solve this problem any other way than through.
He’ll bring her to his rooms once they’ve mated here, maybe more than once depending on their stamina and his hunger. This’ll do fine for now. She looks gorgeous, Mech thinks as he lays her out. He pulls the remaining scraps of her dress off. His eyes trace the goosebumps that spring up after he backs off with fascination as he methodically begins to strip himself. Gwen seems more than understanding and is eagerly removing the last of her clothing—her panties—with a quickness that betrays her own need. The scent that flows out of her is nearly enough to bring him to his knees. But there’ll be time for that later.
Gwen props herself up on her elbows to watch him with half-lidded, ravenous eyes. His eyes keep straying to her chest, already bearing the red and white marks from his fangs and his claws. He’s never been more proud of anything in his life than that she let him mark her as such. He’s never giving her up.
“I don’t share,” Mech says bluntly as he places a hand next to her hip. He isn’t arguing or retreating or trying to back out anymore. This is at worst a warning, at most a promise. “This can’t be a one-time thing. I won’t change my mind, not about you. I’ll keep you all to myself.”
“Yes,” Gwen agrees easily. She lays back down while reaching for him, the invitation in the lines of her body obvious. Her fingers wrap around his forearm, the black spines that line it, and there’s no give to her hold. “Mine.”
He vaults onto the bed, over her, without thought and she welcomes him. Her hands map every inch of his skin she can reach, no fear at the way his black spines lining back and arms are standing at attention. Gwen’s touch starts off light as he arranges himself over her, but once he brings their lips together for another mind-melting kiss, she increases the pressure. Mech can feel each point of contact, each finger tip, as she digs them in and drags her nails connecting th black splotches that litter his red skin.
Mech pictures his skin turning from red to pink, lightning from the force she’s exerting to try to mark him and he grows harder if at all possible. He ruts against her upper thigh with greater intent, getting impatient. All the relief from this much contact finally not enough to satiate his hunger for his mate. His Gwen.
She must notice because she hums with smug satisfaction into the kiss and those same fingers start to migrate from his back to rest low on his hips. “Gwen,” he groans, pulling back from her lips just far enough to pant her name against her lips.
Her fingers brush his cock in a deliberate tease, one he’s past having patience for. His hips chase those fingers for a more purposeful grip. Luckily, she seems unwilling to play this game any longer either. Her fingers wrap around him. “Yeah?” her voice is rough with desire and every nerve in his body sings at the sound, at her touch. She strokes down, from root to tip, seemingly not put off by the black ridges and bumps his red cock has that he knows humans don’t. She must really have done her—Mech’s thoughts scatter when she twists her fingers, lubricated by pre-cum the same silver as his venom which leaks from his erection. She grinds the palm of her hand against the sensitive head and he arches his back with a moan that feels like it's pulled straight from the depths of him.
“Fuck, Mech,” Gwen pants, eyes darting from his face to his cock and everywhere in between, clearly unable to decide where to look while Mech just tries to keep his eyes open so he doesn’t miss a second of his wildest dreams coming true right underneath him. “You’re gonna feel so good inside me, aren’t you?”
“Yes,” Mech hisses even as he presses down on her shoulder, moving up to position himself for just that. “Need to be inside you now.”
“Yeah,” Gwen agrees, lining him up with perfect precision. “Now, now, fuck, n—”
Her words are cut off when she moans as he sinks into her welcoming wet heat. She gasps as he pulls her legs open further with his tail, lifting her ass off the bed to angle his thrust home best. He can’t think about anything except how good she feels, how hot and snug and perfect she is. He thinks he babbles some of that aloud as he pushes in. “So wet, so soft. Fuck, Gwen.”
“Ye-es,” she replies back, eyes closed to better savor the feeling of him filling her in one long inexorable movement. She hooks her leg around his for better stability and he takes advantage immediately. Pushing that much further in, massaging her ass with the hand he has on it, letting his claws dig in to her yielding flesh. She groans at the pinpricks of sensation from his claws and venom, from him finally hilting deep within her.
There’s a split second where there’s nothing but the sound of their labored breathing and the whoosh of the vents. The calm before the storm. Everything outside of them ceases to exist as every hormone is his body cries out in triumph. Mech’s eyes meet hers and he ignites once more. He pulls out halfway, but he can’t seem to exist outside of her anymore and quickly thrusts back in, adding a grind to the end that makes Gwen moan deeply. Her hands land on his shoulders as she pushes against him, matching his movements with a synchronicity he never should have doubted she was capable of.
Her palms push on his own chest for leverage and he gasps at how it feels against his nipples. Gwen picks up on his reaction immediately, her focus zeroing in on her new target. Mech bows his head, overwhelmed by all the sensation his touch-starved body isn’t used to. That of course brings his mouth within range of her delectable neck, all that lovely skin and sweat and scent, all uniquely Gwen. He laves his tongue along her collarbone, fangs grazing and mouth sucking in a random, hazy, instinctual pattern that seems to drive her wild if the way she clenches around him is anything to go by.
“So close, so close, so close,” Gwen chants, her hands moving to his spines, holding on tight to ride out how roughly he’s fucking her with his pistoning cock. The ache of her grip is sweet enough his next thrust has an extra swivel of his hips behind it. “Mech! Mech, please. Please.”
He knows exactly what she’s begging for and he’d rather die than let her go unsatisfied. His tail finds and grinds against her clit with unerring accuracy despite the desperate motion of their coupling. Her reaction nearly throws him over the edge, the throbbing of her walls around his cock exquisite in their increased intensity. Mech preserves through the sensation, determined to make Gwen come before he does.
Luckily, it only takes a few more strokes and making a calculated tug on her clit for her to call out, “Yes! Me-ch!” The final strands of his self-control snap and he comes on the next thrust, his cock and fangs buried deep in his claimed mate. The ensuing euphoria blanks his mind from anything other than pleasure and he slumps against Gwen, satisfaction flowing through his veins.
Mech eventually comes to and finds himself carefully lapping at the bite mark he made on her shoulder, his venom already having closed the wounds, but leaving them sensitive if Gwen’s hums and twitches of pleasure are any indication. Her hands are running absently up and down his arms and limp spines, sending ripples of residual pleasure through him.
He’s never felt this content before, wrapped around this wonderful woman, still buried in her. He can still feel the unusual lust swimming through his body, but it's more than manageable at the moment. All he wants to do is enjoy this culmination of everything he never thought he would get to have.
Of course, that gratification and laziness only lasts so long. Gwen starts to stir more coherently beneath him and that insatiable desire begins to make itself known once more.
“Are you hard again?” Gwen’s voice breaks the stillness, bewildered and still sounding a little orgasm-drunk.
“Yes,” he acknowledges, pressing a sheepish kiss to her neck.
She shifts, muscles clenching and relaxing. Mech fights the urge to whimper as she asks, more curiously than anything, “Is that a graviel thing or a mating frenzy thing?”
“I can’t remember,” he admits as a few seconds contemplation where all he can think of is how good she feels and what other marks he wants to leave on her. “Might just be a sex-with-you thing.”
“Hm, good answer.” Gwen rolls her hips, mouth nipping at his neck with a promise that sends anticipatory shivers down his spines as they stand at attention once more. “You’ve got five seconds to roll us over so I don’t knock us to the floor. I wanna be on top this time.”
I wrote this over a year ago and it was on my wattpad so I decided to move it over here too. Its my first crack at an alien and a space story. Let me know what you think and if I should continue this world building.
I reread it and I’m not a fan but I never like any of my work so eh. Its unbeta’d because we die like men here.

The sun that rose in the west was at its peak as you pretended to rummage through your backpack. It was the kind of hot that evaporated the sweat from your body before it even had a chance to drip and you could feel the skin at the back of your neck boiling. Stealing the large tub of sun cream you in preparation for your days on this hell-site of a planet was honestly one of the smartest things you had ever done in your life.
A few feet away, Duxob leaned against your bikes, tinted band hiding half his reptilian face as he scanned the area - particularly the cargo wagon by the gateway- under the guise of adjusting something on one of the handle bars.
It was a believable enough scene. Your bikes looked like they were on their last legs, barely functional and ill-maintained, what with all the scratches and chipped paint, the dangling wires and exposed gear shifts. The tires were covered in duct tape. The seats were tattered and stained. The metals looked rusted and dangerous.
No one needed to know that they only looked that way though.
No one needed to know that you designed them to look like heaps of junk. Aside from the things that you needed to fix on them the next time you hit a decent port city, they ran smoother and faster than anything on this side of the galaxy. But, for the purposes of keeping your head down and not getting robbed, life was easier when they didn't look appealing.
Across the clearing, you could hear the men attaching the empty wagon to the jump ship, checking over the mechanics one last time. They're yelling something The driver of the jump ship revs the gears in quick bursts, filling the silent port with noise, and you know that you only have a few minutes before they leave.
You adjust your band down over the bridge of your nose, turning up the the tint so your eyes weren't visible. If anyone was watching, you didn't want them to have any more identifiers than necessary. It was bad enough that your roots were showing, revealing your natural hair color to the world.
Glancing up at Duxob, you nod. His scales shift colors -green to blue to purple- in silent agreement, running his hand over his pants and mounting his bike. There was no need for words when you've been working together as long as you have. There is no doubt between you and it makes picking out the best targets easier than breathing.
Like the driver. You would have approached him. He was an old Culxan, wrinkles deep in his wide face and expression set in a way that shows he has never known much other than struggle and hard labor in his long life, but he was soft around the edges. He likely had a family or at the very least, he wished he had one. You'd be able to play into that if you had the time, chipping away at him with curious glances and innocent but intrusive questions until he broke rules about stowaways and border jumping.
But time was the one thing you didn't have at the moment.
Which was why Duxob was taking the lead while you kept watch, one hand on your gun and the other on your bike handle. There were no visible security measures - the region you were in was way too poor to afford drones and bots and all the other high tech shit that smothers the galaxies - but that didn't mean much. This was an outlaw station - used more for transporting produce and drugs than intel and technology - and that meant anyone could have some sort of weapon on them at any time.
Which meant that they all did.
It also meant that you both needed to be extra careful. What you were doing was still illegal - Duxob could be arrested the moment he set foot by the gates - but there was a lawlessness about the way they dealt with criminals. There were no questions. There were no arrests. There were no calling the authorities.
You didn't just have to watch for guard passes through the jump, you had to watch for anyone who looked at your partner for longer than 10 seconds.
It made you anxious but you knew Duxob could handle himself. He was Alzeanian after all - one of the most deadly species to exist on this side of the cosmos - and while they were rare and were hardly ever seen off their own planet, everyone knew what they were capable of.
It was an advantage you had utilized many times since you met him.
Still, you also never looked away from him as he approached the cargo wagon. Between the whirring of refueling pods and the grinding of the lines, the whole area is drowned in a sea of noise that made it damn near impossible for you to pick up what Duxob was saying. He was off his bike and if you hadn't redesigned it yourself, you would have thought it was turned off.
'Not safe yet,' you thought, watching as he adjusts his gait into a saunter as he approaches the driver. His wide smile is all sharp teeth but his flat nostrils are closed into slits as he scented the wagon. After a moment, the slits flared open again and He stretched, his lean body on display as his dirty shirt rode up.
You tried not to stare but it was difficult when your job was literally to watch his scales to see if they shifted or not.
Duxob's toothy smile morphed into an easy grin as he reached down into his pocket and pulled out a small bag, slipping it into the driver's pointed claw in a pseudo-handshake. He flashed green and you knew you were safe for the moment.
Relieved, you hitched your backpack over your shoulders as Duxob drove back over. "We good?"
"Yeah. One bag of units and four ounces of dust," he husks, removing his own backpack from where it was hooked onto his bike, "Pretty cheap but then again, the wagon is empty, they're jumping through a moon shift, and its heading to the Triquaz region so anything more than that would have been bullshit and he knows it."
"Ew."
You hated the Triquaz region. Hated it. On your list of choices for destinations, it wouldn't even make it to the top 500 but the reality was that you didn't have a choice at the moment. They needed to get off this planet and find a port where they could stock up on their dangerously low supplies. You were human, which limited the amount of things you could consume in the galaxy apparently, and finding stations that imported Earth produce and the like took a bit of research to find.
"I know but at least the temperature doesn't fluctuate so suddenly or so dramatically."
"This is true," you sighed, adjusting your grip on your handle bars as you walked alongside the bulky alien, kicking up dust as you did so "Do you know which planet we're going to?"
"No but I do know we will be confined inside the back for a good five days before we get there."
"Well fuck," you groaned, "Do we have enough to get us through til then?"
His lips quirked up and you couldn't help be annoyed at it. You had real concerns damnit! You knew how much you had in your bag but that was it. You didn't touch your partner's bag unless it was a severe medical emergency, like the time you got bit by a Qon and needed a poison pack or when Duxob accidentally burned off an entire forearm's worth of scales and skin trying to readjust the thrusters on his bike without your supervision.
"Don't fucking smirk at me dickhole."
His grin widened minutely before disappearing completely, "We will be fine. We have enough to last until we get off-world and find somewhere to sleep."
God you missed sleep. It felt like ages since you were able to get more than an hour here and there. The tension in your body was tight enough to choke someone to death. Your body was not made for the rough interstellar outlaw lifestyle that you found yourself in and it loved to remind you of that.
The alternative wasn't any better so you tried not to bitch too much about it.
The wagon was attached to the jump ship, the back door closing as it prepared to jump. The gatekeepers on both sides of the portal gate were bustling too and fro, making sure everything was secured for a final time before departure.
"Ready?" Duxob grunts, picking up the pace.
This part, along with literally everything else about being a stowaway, made you nervous. Jumping was a very serious, precious thing. If you fell back, it usually wasn't so bad. Depending on how far you are, you could come back unscathed. If you fell to the side.....well, it wasn't pretty thats for damn sure.
"Ready."
As one, you run forward, kicking up even more dust and shoving your bikes upwards, hopping into the wagon just as the doors close. You can hear the clicking as the metal latch seals and the overpowering light from the east sun was consumed in darkness. You quickly dropped to your knees and clutch onto the metal door handle, feeling the start-up of the initial burst of speed that is required in order to jump.
Duxob worked quickly to secure the security locks and activate the bracer shields on the bikes, knowing full well how awful it could be if the bikes remained unsteady during liftoff.
The wagon rocks as the buildup increases. There is heavy clanging happening outside, slowly being drowned out by the familiar ghostly noises of the portal as the wagon approaches it. You brace yourself as the rocking turns into lurching, knowing full well that no matter how hard you clutch onto the door, you are going to be flung.
It always hurts and this time is no different. The bruises on your back are going to be a fucking bitch.
"Y/N?" Duxob pulls a light stick from his bag as it ends, snapping the two ends together and holding it up. The wagon illuminates and you give him a thumbs up from where you landed on the floor on the opposite side of the wagon.
"Is anything broken, you weird fragile creature?"
The thumbs up quickly turns into middle finger and he snorts, which makes you bend your arm and snap it up a few times to emphasize the level of 'fuck you' you are directing at him. You hated everything.
The wagon lurches again and flings you over to another side of the wagon yet again. Pain shoots into your side but its quickly quashed when you realize it hurled you right into Duxob's body, causing him to grunt and slam back into the wall forcefully.
Fucking aftershocks.
"Ish what you get for talking shit asshole," you mumbled, face pressed uncomfortably into his abdomen (?)- you had no idea because Duxob dropped the light stick on impact and it rolled underneath one of the bikes and died.
A solid hour goes by before either of you move, wanting to be completely sure that the jump was successful.
"Only five days to go," you grumble as you finally shift away from the chilled body of your partner, "Fuck."
Five days of sleeping on a hard floor, working in the low lights of your remaining sticks, sucking on dehydrated food packs and ignoring the grumbling in your stomachs, and trying not to go stir crazy in the darkness of space. Again.
"We'll get through it. We always do."
"I know," you sigh, "I just wish it was different sometimes."
He doesn't say anything but you can feel his clawed hands stroke the top of your head and you hum, content despite the complaints on your lips. You'd cope. You both would. Just like you always do.
Because you weren't alone and neither was he.
~~~~~
Five days was four days and 23 hours too many to be confined in the dark with nothing to do. You were ready to tear your skin off just to have something else to focus on. As awesome as it was, travelling the galaxies wasn't a luxurious process if you didn't have the money to book passage on a tourist ship or buy your own. More often than not, if you wanted to get somewhere off-planet, you either hitched a ride or you snuck your way into empty crates and bag holds, spending hours upon hours being quiet and still.
It was maddening at the worst of times but you always felt better knowing that Duxob was with you, keeping you company in the quiet.
Nevertheless, the moment the secondary engines turned off, you were up and ready for action, securing your stuff back onto your body before the clinking and clanging of the descent even stopped.
Duxob was too by the looks of it. His face was always hard to read but you could tell he was just as anxious to escape your wooden prison as you were. You couldn't see it too well in the dark but his scales were more red than any other color and bright than normal, indicating his level of irritation. You watched as he pressed close to the wood, listening to the shouting coming from the outside through his comm chip.
You would have but yours was damaged and the parts were too small to see and repair in the total darkness of the wagon. The universe was filled with other languages and you picked up what you could but everything on the outside sounded foreign.
"Can you make anything out?" you whisper, already straddling your bike with your hand on the starter. After being confined for so long, the rush of adrenline was blinding. You wanted to go.
Duxob jerks away from the wood quickly and hops on his own bike, "We've descended. They'll be opening the door any minute now. Get ready." His long clawed hand turned his bike on before reaching over and flicking yours on too, "We have to be quick. This port is more heavily armed with border agents and just as ruthless. Be careful."
"You too."
The seconds seem to drag on and anxiety causes your grip on your handles to strengthen even as you start to sweat. Border patrol agents were nasty pieces of work, hired to check and process travellers as they come and go off planets but, because there were no uniform regulations to keep them in line, they often just did as they pleased to people, especially those that are illegally jumping.
Like you and Duxob were.
"We will be fine Y/N," Duxob mumbled quietly, his voice hoarse from disuse and oh how you loved how he said your name "They haven't caught us yet. They never will."
The darkness seems deeper in the contours of his face as you look at him, emphasizing the brightness of his golden reptilian eyes and the gold pseudo-eyes that rest above them and bleeding over the contours of his cheekbones. (He never explained to you what the 'pseudo eyes' were - you weren't even sure if they were eyes to begin with- or what they did and you couldn't bring yourself to care about you- not when he was looking at you and you had more important things to focus on).
He's all hard lines and safety, a reminder of all you've gone through the last few years to get where you are, and you relax just the slightest bit.
"No. They never fucking will."
His lips quirk up again, "Now get ready. Its almost time."
And he was right. No sooner than you had turned back to face the wagon door, did it open with a hiss, revealing several border patrol guards with scanners and tasers and all the pretty toys you wish you could get your hands on.
"Show time."
~~~~~~
The getaway was as dramatic as you would expect. The air tasted wet, the humidity of the planet already working its magic on your already beaten body as you sped away from the guards. The port was a mess - Duxob finding it absolutely necessary to snatch one of their stun bombs and let it off over the entire port. There was a pain spreading from your side and you knew without a doubt that you got hit.
But it was worth it.
Duxob was unharmed.
You glance over your shoulder and assess the chaos left in your wake. Its nothing more than a smoky ball of dirt on wet and slimy hilltop and you grin when you see that the guard patrol bikes are still hovering around the port.
"They didn't see us. I think we're good," you shout, grinning wide despite the pulsing pain in your side. You could feel the blood dripping down your back, a burning sensation crawling over your flesh. Carefully, you engage your auto-drive.
"Lets get farther away before we get comfortable," the reptilian man warned, doing nothing to stop the smirk forming on his lips but kicking his bike into the next gear. You untie and retie your jacket's belt quickly, using whats left of your clothes as a makeshift bandage to staunch the bleeding, before putting your bike into the next gear to catch up.
"Where to?" You could feel drops of water splashing up from your wheels and you pointedly do not think about how much fucking mud you are going to have to clean out of your rechargers later. Instead, you focus on how exhilarating it feels to be alive.
Alive and with Duxob.
"There is a city not far from here but I think we should head out farther. When they release we got away, they'll immediately head to it to try and smoke us out."
"Sounds good to me." It really didn't, not with the way the fire in your side spread and consumed you but auto-drive was a beautiful thing and it wouldn't be the first time you passed out and needed your bike to take you to safety. Duxob was more than capable of syncing your bike to his so you didn't get separated and he was more than used to you passing out due to your human stamina.
It would be ok.
~~~~~~
It was not ok.
You had been on the road for at least a full 12 hours before Duxob found a port city to stop in, every rock, bump, and hurdle ripping at the ever-growing wound on your side. There was nothing special about this particular port - same lost cost rooms, dingy dive bars, questionable food marts, and horrific pleasure buildings, all the same shit that comes with being a hub for the transients and the poor - and that what made it the perfect place to lay low for a bit.
It also meant that there likely wasn't a med bay anywhere in the vicinity and you're going to have to try and fix the wound yourself when Duxob went for food.
There were plenty of buildings advertising rooms but Duxob was picky, choosing the one that had the least amount of skeevy employees and cleaner bathrooms. It had a parking lot right outside the rooms, which was good since being able to get to their bikes at a moment's notice was vital in your combined survival.
Your room was all the way in the back of the building, on the first floor, another thing Duxob insists on when you bunker down in actual rooms for a night or two.
"I got us a room for five nights," he says, flashing the card keys and slipping them into his jacket pocket.
The surprise on your face must have been obvious because he snorted, "We need a rest. And we need to restock. Shipments are due to come in all this week at this port. Better to lay low and stay than run off with half empty gas tanks and no food."
Point.
"They didn't charge me too much," he murmured, knowing how anxious you got when you ran low on units, "I bartered."
Bartered meaning threatened the clerk until he was satisfied that they wouldn't bother you both. You smirked up at him, "Good. I'm assuming we also have an hydration pod?"
Duxob leveled you with a stern look before it broke into a small grin and a wink, almost sending you to your knees in shock.
"Oooh, whats got you all playful?" you joked, subtly adjusting so you could poke his abdomen through his thick jacket. The movement was enough to make you want to die but you could not pass up the opportunity to tease him.
"You're going to stop smelling like shit and I'm excited about it."
"Fuck you, you stoic cumstain," you cackled, knowing full well that he was right. A downside to the life is that cleanliness often had to be traded for survival. Weeks could go by with only light rinsing and scrubbing through hoses and water containers and lakes. Soap was an almost nonexistent luxury as was conditioner and lotion.
Honestly, it was one of the hardest things you had to give up when you first left Earth and the thought of slipping into the pod and being able to do a deep cleansing of your body and wound was heavenly.
The scales on his head shift to a deep violet, spreading down his neck and chest in striping patterns and you know he is just as excited as you are to bathe. He reeks just as much as you do, the skin between his scales caked with ingrained dirt that probably drove him insane.
You made a mental note to offer to swab them out for him after his initial wash. You know, if you didn't pass out from the pain.
He swipes the card through the door before walking back outside to secure the bikes. You immediately drop all your stuff onto the bed in the corner, slowly lowering your body down next to it. You side screamed in protest, sweat starting to drip down your body as the wound shifted from a spreading pain into paralyzing infection.
Which means that it wasn't just a normal blaster the guard was wielding.
Which means that it was one of the million different kinds of biological weapons they had at their disposal.
Which means that not only did it feel like your flesh was being fried and eaten, it likely was being fried and eaten to create the ideal environment for whatever chemical or disease that was inside it to make itself at home and infect you.
Which meant you were fucked.
The world got really fuzzy.
"....hey....Y/N? Are you ok?" your partner said, voice sounding distant.
'Oh...I think I'm dying,' you thought sluggishly as Duxob's face appeared above yours, handsome reptilian face slowly fading.
"Nope," you slurred, making sure to emphasize the pop of the 'P', "I got shot at the port. Thought it was a normal blaster shot but looks like its not...."
"What?"
Oh, he sounded mad.
"Yeah. Don't be mad."
"Oh. Mad doesn't even begin to cover what I'm feeling," he growled, easing off your jacket and the majority of your shirt off as carefully as he could to inspect the damage. "Why didn't you say anything?"
"We had to get away." There were pieces of fabric melted into the wound and no matter how gentle he was being, it was not pleasant and you couldn't stop the choked noises from escaping. Something cold was sprayed on the blistering skin and you vaguely recognized the smell of antibiotic spray.
'He's so smart,' your mind supplied as it floated in dead, squishy remnants of your ability to think rational and continuous thought, 'Knows just what I need.'
"We could have stopped sooner! This needs to be dressed and treated!"
You didn't have the strength to argue, blinking to fight off the very tempting urge to just pass out and ignore the way your body was succumbing to the infection. There was an unhealthy amount of sweat pooling in your collarbones and in the small of your back but there was ice in your bones.
"Stay awake. Stay the fuck awake Y/N! Do you hear me? I'm going to wrap you up and get some help."
"Too dangerous."
"Fuck you, I swear if-"
You didn't hear what he said next. Everything went silent, like when audio is cut right in the middle of a movie. You were positive he was still talking but his lips were moving way too fast for you to read them and it wasn't like you could see them clearly anyway.
A feeling of calm washes over you before the world goes black.
~~~~~
The first time you regain consciousness feels like something out of one of your nightmares.
There is pain.
Lots and lots of fucking pain.
And you can't move. Your body was frozen, limbs unresponsive and weak.
And there is one - no, two - faces hovering above you covered in blood and neither of them was Duxob. You didn't recognize either of them but you knew that the blood was yours.
The screams formed and fizzled out before they could reach your teeth.
'Please. Please let me die. Oh my God, please let me die. I can't....help me. Someone help me!'
The darkness gripped you tight and you hoped that you never woke up again.
~~~~~~
The second time you wake up, you are in a different room and the pain is gone but it was replaced with a throbbing ache in your joints. Its dark, the only light coming from a small light stick in the corner of the room, but you can make out the shape of something moving in the room behind weighted eyelids.
"Dux?" you rasp, mouth dry and disgusting, "That you?"
The shadow figure moved closer. Right away you knew it wasn't Dux and you couldn't stop the anxious whine from escaping. It crackled painfully in your throat. The dark hid everything from you, fear slamming back into you forcefully.
"Shhh. Shhh little love," the shadow whispered, voice feminine and sweet, "Dux is nearby. Cade had to take him to the back room while R fixed you up."
A cool cloth was placed on your head and you flinched, whining again when you realized you couldn't move away from it. The ache spread throughout your body as it tried to shiver. The bed beside your hand dipped before a soft hand stroked your cheek and hair.
"Rest. You are out of danger now. I'll let Dux know you know you woke up," the shadow said, a smooth lilt to its voice as they continued to soothe you. "He worries."
As much as you want to protest, to jump up and demand answers, scream for Duxob to come in and protect you from the shadow and this strange, awful place, you couldn't help but the shadow's touch was comforting. Something beeped somewhere in the darkness followed by a burst of sweet-smelling aroma.
Before you could stop yourself, you slipped gently back into unconsciousness with the bitter knowledge of waking up alone on your tongue.
~~~~~~
The third time you woke up, you felt better. The throbbing ache was centralized to the spot where you knew your wound was. You kept your eyes closed for a few moments, cataloging your body, relieved when it seems that all your limbs seemed back online and capable of movement.
"Y/N?" a familiar voice asked and you couldn't help the grin as it formed on your mouth.
"Dux?"
"Yeah, its me," the sound of wood scraping on wood filled the room and the bed dipped a little, "I was starting to think Jazza lied."
"Who?"
"Don't worry about it right now," he murmured quietly and you didn't have to look to see that his face was next to yours on the pillow, "How do you feel?"
"Sore," you whimpered, shifting a bit on the bed, "but good. Better."
"Good. Good."
After a moment of struggle, you were able to roll your head to side and open your eyes. Duxob's face was, indeed, very close to yours on the pillow. Close enough that you could trace the green patterns in his iris's.
"Hi," you whispered.
"Hey."
"You ok?"
"Yeah, I'm ok."
"Promise?"
He chuckled at that, the sound reverberating through the pillow, "Promise. Go back to sleep. You need more rest."
As soon as the words left his lips, you yawned, sending what was probably a really nasty-smelling gust of gross-mouth into his face. His face contorted in mild disgust but stayed put. You admired his restraint.
"Sleep." There was a hint of command in his tone.
So you did, eager to fall into a place that was just Dux's cool hands and vibrant scales.
~~~~~~
Weeks had passed before you were able to stay awake for more than three hours and each time you woke up, Duxob was there with fresh blankets, soup, and a new story about what he had done while he waited for you to wake up again.
You quickly became acquainted with Jazza, a fiery little humanoid Flazian woman with artificial purple eyes and scars across her pink body who you recognized as the shadow who lulled you back to sleep, Cade, a small golden alien (you couldn't place his species for the life of you) with bright orange antennae and tattoos covering his body, and R, a tall tentacled Carcog who trained as a doctor on Pantone but left the practice to lead a rebellion after he discovered that the institution that hired him had been giving placebos to the poorer populations of beings instead of actual medicine.
You had also learned that the building you were in was where R worked to heal the disenfranchised and those injured by border agents and those they work for in the various riots and rages he leads and organizes. It was beaten down and broken, windows boarded up with wood and red tape, floors splintered and decayed, regularly infested with at least three kinds of parasites at any given moment - seven if Cade didn't parasite bomb once a week -, and the smell was enough to make you vomit. It was incredibly well-hidden - it had to be in order to fly under the radar for extended periods of time.
However, despite the shitty state of the building and most of its rooms overall, the healing rooms were immaculate and perfectly sterile. The medicine cabinets were lined up neatly along the walls and labeled with the different medicines they stored. There were neat charts and lists hanging on the walls - patient schedules, post-its with cute doodles on them, restock lists, all manner of relevant papers.
Air purifiers hung in every corner just high enough to reach and adjust if needed and you were thankful for them because without them, you could imagine it getting quite stuffy in the room.
Cade had found the building right before the last time they had been forced to run - over 3 years ago - and they still hadn't been found, which put you at ease. You wouldn't be able to fight your way out if there was a raid on the building.
Especially since you were unarmed and unable to get out of bed without risking rupturing all of R's hard work.
They were quite the trio, always on the go and doing something, getting in each other's way - sometimes on purpose just to get a rise out of the other - but, despite their strangeness, you were grateful. They saved your life and, from what Jazza had said, kept Duxob from losing his shit all over the place while you were out.
"Dinnertime!" Jazza sang as she sauntered into the room, a steaming bowl of gross mush that was supposed to promote rapid healing.
"Oh goody," you reply sarcastically, dog-earing the page you were on and putting the book off to the side so she could place the bowl on your lap table.
"Hush now," she mock-scolded, purple eyes whirring as they focused on you, "This is helping."
"But it tastes like shit," you whine loudly, exaggerating random syllables, "Its NASTY!"
"Child, I will spank you."
"Pfft, that is sooooo not a punishment," you smirked, wiggling your eyebrows at her as she cackled.
"If it makes you feel better, the rest of us are stuck on this canned garbage until we can make another run and it tastes even worse than the shit R is making for you."
"You're right, I do feel better."
"Oh fuck off."
You laughed, only stopping when your side started to throb. R had told you all about the stuff you had been shot with, and, because you waited so long before getting it treated, you would likely always have a residual pain in your side from where the nerves had been frayed and rebuilt. Over time, the pain would fade into a more manageable level and you'd be able to resume most activities but it would likely never go away.
It bummed you out in more ways than you could ever imagine and for once, you were thankful Duxob wasn't in the room. You were 90% sure R had already told him everything a;ready, there was no way he wasn't going to get some answer from R after he had fixed you up, but you sure as hell didn't want to have a conversation about it.
"So, I have more questions," Jazza smiled and you groaned obnoxiously, causing her to shoot you a playful glare.
Jazza had grown up with very little knowledge of the worlds beyond her own, having come from a very secretive sub-community on a moon in some quadrant you hadn't even heard of, and only started experiencing other beings when she hitched a ride with Cade off her birth world. As a result, she had at least 20 new questions for you every time she came in and grilled you endlessly as she tried to understand. Most of the time, her questions were about humans and Earth but there were times when her curiosity drifted to your partner.
It was sweet, the way she lit up when something made sense to her. She's get all starry eyed and excited and you felt a pang of loss over your own loss of wonder.
"Ok. Shoot."
"What is up with Dux's scales? One minute they're green. Then they're blue. They get really bright and then dim down like a Hashi craft. I fucking turned around yesterday and he had bright red fucking elbows for no reason and I don't know dude, is he sick? Does he need a catheter too?"
If you had been drinking, you would have choked, "First of all, thank you for reminding me that I have one of those in right now. I really needed to be reminded that I can't pee on my own."
"You are welcome," she responds with all the seriousness of condolence.
" Secondly, its partially how he communicates," you said, rolling noodles onto your fork, "Alzeanian scales are a lot more complex than what people think. Probably because they don't leave their planet often and anyone who visits their planet gets killed so no one really has any data on them." You shrug, dipping your fork of noodles in the little sauce pot. "Each scale looks like its just a flat color from a distance but the closer you get, the more you can see that they are more of an iridescent duo-chrome. Alzeanians can control how muted or how bright their colors are and can make them shift from regardless of where they are standing in the light. Duxob has a green to blue-purple shift in the majority of his scales. In others, he has a gold to red shift and he has a tiny patch that shifts between purple and red but that's literally just on his elbow. Depending on where we are and what we are trying to do, he uses them to talk to me from a distance."
"That is so cool," Jazza whispers, eyes wide and whirring as she slurps down her own food with her double-tongue.
"It can be," you acknowledge, "and its always nice knowing that your partner is adept at handing any kind of situation and can alert you real fast if things get...unsavory. I lucked out big time that he took me on."
You couldn't help the twinge of sadness that came when you thought too deeply about Duxob's presence in your life and the implications of how recent events were going to change that.
"How so? I saw your Wanted reel. You are quite handy with a gun," she grinned, nudging you with a dirty hand and you couldn't help but grin back. You were extremely proud of your Wanted reel. It really captured your insanity and desperation for freedom. Other outlaws try to seem as scary as possible when they know they are being filmed to dissuade anyone from coming after them.
Not you though.
You welcomed the challenge.
'Come and get me. I dare you.'
"I try."
"You succeed."
"Its all I know how to do. Wield a gun and fix bikes," you shift your now empty bowl away from you. There is a bitterness lurking there, something you try to keep down as much as possible. Jazza seems to understand.
"Lets change your bandages," she suggests and you are grateful for the change in topic.
~~~~~~
You hate physical therapy.
Hated it.
You also hated Duxob.
Because the piece of shit loved to get you up early and do the exercises with you until you cried.
This morning was no different. The stupid lizard wouldn't stop smiling as he guided you into each stretch.
"Stop enjoying this," you grumbled as he pushes down on your torso so you get an actual stretch instead of one of the fakes ones you did before he took over because you didn't see the point of putting yourself in more pain.
"I'm not," he said, smile stretched, sharp, jagged teeth on display, even further on his usually stoic face. Fucking liar.
"You are, you - ow, ow, ow, owwwww," you screeched as he eased you into the most painful of the stretches, "Whhhhhyyyyy?"
"You need to use your muscles again. You were in a coma on and off for two weeks and you've been recovering in bed for two more. You're going to get squishy and useless."
"I already am squishy and useless though!"
"No, you aren't," he murmured, letting you come out of the stretch and falling back onto the bed, "And you need to get your body used to movement again."
"Leave me to die," you whine dramatically, turning your head and throwing your arm over your eyes like a princess.
The words formed and hit your mouth before they hit your brain and the silence that follows is deafening.
"I think recent circumstances would suggest that I wouldn't," Duxob says, soft and displeased.
"I know," you sigh.
~~~~~~
"Tell me," Jazza begins, a couple of days later, "How'd you get hurt anyway? I feel like we've talked about literally everything else since you've been here but that. You had a pretty sizable wound when you came in. R wasn't sure you were going to pull through and he's done multiple surgeries on Gorglax creatures."
"Oh um, well," you wrack your brain for a good explanation but the look on Jazza's face suggests a finger right in your side if you lie. "Ok well. We had gotten off a port wagon and the usual 'run for your lives before the space coppers get you' game ensued. Dux had managed to get a hold of one of their stun bombs and released it, paralyzing the border guards. Most of them anyway." You take a deep breath, a weird flash of emotion flowing through you as you relived it. Ew. Not going there. "There was a smaller one following close behind us as we fled from the port. I don't know if he saw me or what, maybe he completely disregarded me as being the less important catch - whatever - but he aimed at the back of Dux's bike. His recharger wasn't in the best shape - I only had duct tape with me when I rewired it - and any sort of hit would have caused an explosion. He took aim at it and I swerved in front of him, causing him to slam on the breaks and swerve away."
Your side throbbed dully at the memory of your skin splitting open as the gun went off anyway, haphazardly, hitting you just enough to burn away a chunk of your body.
"It went off anyway and got me in the back as I was speeding away."
"It wasn't a direct hit?"
"No, thankfully."
"Then why was it so bad?"
You chuckled awkwardly, "I, um, didn't tell Dux I had gotten hurt so we, kinda, sorta...drove for 12 hours before I collapsed and he brought me to you."
The furious look on Jazza's pretty face would have been hilarious if it hadn't been for the fact it was directed at you, "You are an idiot."
"Hey, no I-"
"Yes you are! Did you have some kind of death wish?!"
"No-o...I-"
"You what? What could possibly have gone through your head that would justify you allowing yourself to burn and rot?"
It was silent for a moment as you tried to think of a reason other than the truth but, it just wasn't worth it. Not anymore. You were tired.
"I thought it was a normal hit, something minor," you whispered, unable to keep looking into the girl's pretty purple eyes, "I thought that I'd likely be okay. We'd stop, I'd patch myself up, and we'd rest. It wasn't until we got there that I realized I was fucked but even so, I was content. It hurt like a bitch but I've long accepted that I'm going to die in a shoot out or in a shitty sleep room in some shitty port," you sighed, leaning back into your lumpy pillow and rubbing your face, "And you, if I was gone....Dux would be safe. Safer, I should say."
Jazza's round face softened, the anger melting into a calm understanding.
"How so?" Her voice was soft, like the night she had soothed you to sleep in the shadows.
"I am a liability. I am no use to him, not really. I get hurt more. I eat more. I sleep more. I am more high maintenance than he is. I require things he doesn't and that make being on the road difficult. There is a reason humans aren't an ideal partner, especially when you are running from space cops! I mean, look at where I am now? In bed! Hurt! He had to go around in a strange place and put himself at risk to try and find someone who could help. And he's waiting for me out of some misplaced whatever when we both know he could dip at any moment and he'd survive just fine!"
You didn't realize you were screaming until you stopped to catch your breath, throat hoarse and frustrated tears rolling down your face. Everything that had bottled up the last few years poured out, exploding in a tsunami of bullshit you didn't want to have to deal with. There was a throbbing in your side that you knew was from overexertion but you didn't give a fuck anymore.
"He would be fine," you reiterated, suddenly feeling sluggish. The drip in your arm had turned up on its own at the feel of your elevated heart rate and increasing level of agitation. R had set it up to monitor your activity and keep you from doing something stupid out of boredom and ripping yourself open. It was such a staple in your life that you had forgotten it was even in.
"No, I really wouldn't."
Oh shit.
He did not.
"Dux?" your mouth was slow, dripping over the syllable as he entered the room. A silent conversation took place between him and Jazza, one too fast for your slushy mind to process, before Jazza took off out of the room without another word.
The door closed and he sighed, all but collapsing on the chair next to you bed, looking more ragged than you had ever seen him before. His scales flashed and shifted uneasily as he looked at you.
"It seems we need to talk," he said, the finality of his tone telling you a talk was going to happen despite his phrasing.
"If you want."
"No but we're going to."
"Fine, you start."
Coward, you scolded yourself but hey, feelings were scary, which is why you never dealt with him.
"Fine," he growled, scooting the chair even closer and putting himself all in your personal bed space, "Things are going to change."
"I figured," you shrugged, "I can't run anymore. My side will never allow me to do all the strenuous activity of being an outlaw."
"Agreed. You can't do that anymore," he said, eyes roaming over the bandages peeking through the shredded top you were wearing before meeting your eyes again, "So I came up with a solution."
You leaned your head back, your neck unable to hold it up due to the sedation pumping through you, "Where are you going to take me?"
"What do you mean?"
"I'd like for you to drop me off in a place I'll be able to get around easily enough. I liked that little blue planet we stopped at like 2 years ago."
"You aren't going anywhere."
"But you just said I can't run anymore. I can't stay here forever and we are still Wanteds. I'm going to need to be in a place where I can live and blend in without drawing suspicion."
"Who says you can't stay here?," he asked, harsh golden-green eyes boring into yours, "And who says that I'm going to ditch you on some random planet?"
"Dux, I can't," you pause, mind really blurry because he isn't making any sense and it's making you anxious, "I am very drugged. Please stop."
His gaze softens and he reaches a stubby clawed hand out to stroke your head, "Calm down, ashistoiro. You are ok. You are safe. I am here."
"Ashi-what?"
"Ashistorio, Y/N. Beloved in Alzeanian...well, the closest translation for it," he murmured, claws scraping gently along your skin, "I discussed it with R. He is letting us stay. There is a bunker attached to this building that he is going to let us have until its time for all of us to leave. I am not leaving you. I won't. I can't. You are my biggest asset."
It wasn't a normal confession of love, not by a long shot, but it was one of the most meaningful you had ever heard.
And you hated that you were passing out in the middle of it.
"Yeah?"
He smiled as he watched you nod off, "Go to sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."
Species is such a cool saga, I love that the aliens here look like humanized and hyper sexualized xenomorphs! My favourite creature are Sil and her clones and Patrick Ross!! Some of their designs were initally created by Alien’s father HR Giger!
Here's the winner of the 'which monster to write next' poll (at least it was at the time I started writing it). It’s been on early release for Patreon folks for about a week now, and I was supposed to post it here yesterday, but I forgot. I hope you enjoy it!
Lex is non binary, and if they lived on Earth at the moment, would most likely be assigned male at birth. Tarann (alien) is male, an assassin, and didn’t have what we might view as a normal childhood by any standards. As such, there is an awful lot he does know, and a lot that he's completely unfamiliar with...
The dull, steady voice of his ship’s computer informed him that faster-than-light travel would not be viable with all systems in their current state of blaster-riddled repair.
He cursed.
It then informed him that actually, since barely sticking the landing in a crumbling red-stone canyon, Tarann would be lucky to take off again at all.
He let out a long string of curses, even switching languages a couple of times.
“That was creative. I even detected some Tch’larian in there,” Menot, the androgynous computer, commented. “Been a while since I’ve heard you use your native tongue, Tarann…”
“Go fuck yourself with a Savaranian spiked tuber,” he grumbled, to which the computer had no qualms responding that if they were not a mere collection of unfathomably complicated code - which he had had no hand whatsoever in creating, they sarcastically pointed out - they might consider the directive.
Tarann simply shook his head in frustration and used the lower of his two sets of arms to smash the bulkhead open by the button on the wall, and stalked through the smashed-up ship towards his cramped sleeping quarters. The Spark was hardly a ship built for comfort. She was utilitarian; designed for quick escapes and aerial combat, and short-range sorties. She’d been his home for over a year now, and he’d be lucky if he ever got her to limp into the upper atmosphere of this backwater planet, let alone space. An unhealthy layer of fine red dust was already clinging to her wings and the intakes would likely need some extensive work before he could get her air-worthy again.
Mounting stress made the old implant scar in the side of his neck throb and he trailed his three-fingered hand along it, his skin currently a neutral, dull grey. Barefooted, as nearly all Tch’larians preferred due to particular shape of their three-toed feet, with one additional thumb-like digit that didn’t quite meet the ground when they stood, he padded silently along the metal floors of the ship and began to check and clean his weapons back in his quarters. The familiar monotony of clicking, sliding metal, and the smell of gun lubricant always soothed him.
“Think,” he hissed at himself.
Menot’s voice sounded over the system twenty minutes later and said, “Incoming transmission from the Agency. Would you like me to play it for you?”
He closed his four yellow eyes and inhaled steadily. Reluctantly, he growled, “Yes.”
“Agent Triskelion,” the familiar voice of his handler rumbled. “We understand that your ship took heavy damage in a dogfight after completing your last contract.”
“That’s a fucking understatement,” he snarled but he didn’t interrupt the message further.
“While it was unrelated to the contract on the Red Flame, your unplanned skirmish with Invaranian Rebels did attract attention and we have intelligence to suggest that they might have attempted to trace you following your escape. You are ordered to keep a low profile and your open contracts have been reassigned to other agents until we can be certain that the Red Flame is no longer looking for you.”
The metal of his blaster creaked under his grip and he relaxed before he damaged it, taking another deep breath. He hadn’t had a contract reassigned since he’d first joined the Agency all those years ago. The humiliation of it forced his skin to change from the dusty grey to a vibrant blue, dotted with teal. Feeling like a teenager again, he forced his skin back to its neutral grey and set the blaster aside, reflexively checking the safety before it put it down.
Back at the bridge, though it was barely large enough for him to squeeze around the seat, he snarled, “Menot, record this and prepare to send it to HQ.”
“Very good.”
“Agent Triskelion, acknowledging receipt of transmission and instructions to lie low. Currently grounded in a canyon twenty clicks north west of a small mining town on a planet that’s so fucking tiny it doesn’t even have an official name.” Tarann steady himself and added, “But I’ll get Menot to send coordinates with this transmission. Ship’s pretty beaten up and I’ll probably need extraction at some point. I doubt this place has the parts I need, but I can look. I’m going to head into the town at sunrise and I’ll take Menot with me. And I’ll keep a low profile.”
“As low a profile as one of the galaxy’s finest killers possibly can,” Menot added, and Tarann cursed whoever had coded sarcasm into their system.
“Exactly,” he said. “A stranger rocking up out of nowhere in a town that tiny is hardly going to pass unremarked, but I’ll adapt.” He snorted a little at the irony of that, knowing that his rather unique genetic melange was designed for camouflage. Not for him was the messy application of paints and disguises, though he couldn’t actually change his bone structure beyond accelerated healing. “So yeah, for the love of all you hold dear, please don’t just forget about me here. End recording. Menot, send it to HQ.”
With that, he slumped into the pilot’s seat for a moment and sighed. Menot helpfully informed him that dawn was three hours away, and he told them to shut everything down save for the essentials and maintain a vigilant watch while he attempted to get some sleep.
“I’ll wake you if anything needs your attention,” Menot promised.
With the sun high in the sky, Tarann stalked across the dusty plain that formed a ring around the town. In fact, it was much larger than they’d initially thought, and Menot quietly informed him in his hidden earpiece that the town appeared to go down into the earth, perhaps following the original mine shafts.
“Puts a new meaning on going to ground for a while,” he snorted.
He was relieved as he passed through dirty, dusty, narrow streets, to note all sorts of lifeforms here - some familiar and many not. With limited biodiversity, he might have stood out like a sore thumb, but the place seemed stuffed to the brim with hopeless outcasts from all over the system. There were even some humans here, which surprised him. The temperature was hot and arid, not ideal for the creatures he’d only had brief dealings with. Earth was seen as a backwater, with the emphasis on the water. It was the kind of place people went to retire to, and that was… about it. Enterprising humans had left centuries ago and gone to the newly terraformed planets like Mars - if they still wanted to remain in their solar system - and many more had joined up with the Federation and scattered all over the known galaxies.
When he passed a bipedal, slender human male, he asked Menot to give him a run-down on the species. “Both surprisingly easy and surprisingly difficult to kill, can be self-destructively curious and reckless, capable of making leaps of logic insurmountable to many species while being unfathomably illogical at other times…”
“Baffling,” he murmured. “Sounds like Agent Luna,” he said with a fond smile.
The legendary assassin had assessed him upon arrival at the Agency for unarmed combat, and somehow despite looking so… breakable, had had him on his back in two seconds flat. She’d also been the one to give him his field name, Triskelion, given that a decent number of things in his body, except his two hearts and four eyes, seemed to come in threes - three fingers, three toes, three lungs… The only trio of anatomical parts she hadn’t seen first hand was, well… elsewhere.
The fact that Luna was a fraction of his size and weight hadn’t seemed to matter at all in combat training, and he’d been very wary (and more than a bit in awe) of her since she’d returned from a mission with an injury that even the best surgeons at the Agency had said would kill her. Six months later, she was back in the field. He shuddered. Humans were like Anthariacs, once you thought you had a lock on their size and shape, they could simply morph into something else. Or perhaps they weren’t anything like that at all.
Unsettled, he shuddered again and nearly crashed straight into a small vendor’s stall in the narrow alley.
He heard the scraping voice say something, at which the ear piece translated, “Watch it!”
Shrugging off the encounter, he moved through the streets until he came to what looked like a bar with a noticeboard outside. Most of the listings were mundane requests and adverts for various services, and the rewards were in a currency he’d never heard of.
It took him a month on the planet to earn enough cash to stop having to make the twenty click trek out to the Spark every night to sleep. He would have slept in a doorway in the town had he not witnessed on his very first evening what happened to people who were caught unprepared and exposed. The sight of the slender wings being yanked off a tiny creature with a scream powerful enough to rupture eardrums had stuck with him and he’d risked the local wildlife - largely dirty great lizards - and gritty wind-storms on a daily basis to avoid that.
His handler at The Agency kept contact to an absolute minimum, except to update him periodically on the investigation that the Red Flame was still conducting and to tell him to stay holed up there. Boxed in with nothing to do, Tarann became irritable and jumpy. It wasn’t that he was itching for the next kill - he didn’t do his job for that - but the constant vigilance and insecurity of taking short, messy, shitty jobs here and there was waring him down, so when some jackass in the bar made a comment about that ‘four-eyed hill varanus over there’, he snapped. He’d encountered a hill varanus on one of his long treks back to where the Spark was still stashed out of sight in the canyon, and the enormous lizard had been curled up beside a large boulder, minding its own business until it decided to make Tarann’s sensitive inner calf its business with a maw full of teeth coated in thick poisonous saliva.
He’d been hallucinating by the time he’d managed to get back to the Spark - miraculously without dropping off the ledge and plummeting to the bottom of the canyon - and his body had been rippling through every colour in the known universe, and maybe even a few more, before he’d finally stuck a huge needle full of universal antidote into his left heart. It had taken him a whole day to recover enough to leave the ship.
Being compared to a hill varanus then - yes, his skin had the same gnarled texture as a number of reptiles found all over the galaxy, and yes, his saliva was also poisonous to a huge number of species - had suddenly broken all his carefully constructed control and he’d lunged at the large, slug-like creature, all four hands going around the thinnest point of its neck and squeezing until its eyes bulged.
“Oi!” a relatively high-pitched shout went up from behind the bar and a moment later a short blast of sound shot through the room and everyone cringed. The high-frequency noise made his insides crawl and he let go of the offending creature and staggered back a pace, toes splaying to try and steady himself. His skin flushed a sickly green before he could stop it.
Tarann turned his head and saw that the sound had emanated from a small, hand-held speaker which had been plonked down onto the surface of the bar. Behind it, wielding control of the button on the top of the speaker was - and he could have sworn that he felt his right heart lurch a little in his chest at the sight of them - a human. They had a blaster in their left hand and looked prepared to use it, if not necessarily formally trained. Their stance was pretty shoddy, but the distance of only a few spans between them more than made up for that. If the human fired, Tarann would die for sure.
“No fighting in my bar,” they said, voice stern and steady. “You got an issue with someone, you take it waaaay outside, am I clear?”
Both Tarann and the slug-thing nodded and he decided he needed another drink.
Approaching the human while they still held the weapon was probably not a wise move, but when he leaned his lower arms on the counter, his upper pair hanging loose and relaxed at his sides, Tarann saw a smile on their lips. “You must be new,” they grinned amicably, reaching below the counter to stash the blaster and pulling out a glass in its place. They then turned behind them to fill it up. “Haven’t seen any Tch’larians in here for a long time.”
He liked the way the human almost got the click at the start of the word but not quite. Some humans were known for their incredible mimicry skills, but this one clearly wasn’t as proficient. He also had no idea how to address a human after they’d just threatened his life, so he settled for a curt nod.
“And you’re about as chatty as the last one. Whatever that bit of pond slime over there -” they gestured with a bottle of distilled alcohol at the creature who’d insulted him “- said to you, just ignore them. They’re… a regular in here, but they don’t have many friends, if you catch my drift.”
“I wonder why,” he said flatly.
“It speaks!” the human chuckled. “And you’re fluent in sarcasm as well as Federation Common. Here, on the house.” And a small glass was shunted his way, sloshing with a clear, ruby red liquid. “You’ll like it. It’s a kind of brandy made with a fruit that grows in the mines. At least, the last Tch’larian I knew liked it. I could be grossly stereotyping an entire race based on one data point. Still, free booze…?”
“You talk a lot,” he said before sipping it. It burned his neon blue tongue pleasantly and then left a sweet aroma in his mouth that went up into his nasal cavity, leaving him with the impression he might breathe fire if he opened his mouth again.
“Yeah, well, you don’t, so… one of us has to balance the equation.” After a beat they added, “I’m Lex.” They held out their hand over the bar counter and Tarann vaguely remembered something about touch not being a taboo for humans. Not that it was taboo for Tch’larians either, but with so many people mingling under the Federation’s relatively peaceful protection in the past few centuries, it was still easy to offend someone inadvertently.
He noted the strength in the human’s hand as he slid his own three fingers into the grasp, and smiled at how smooth their skin was. Their hair was cut short at one side and had been left to flop a little longer at the top of their head, and he’d always wondered what a human’s hair would feel like beneath the pads of his sensitive fingers. Agent Luna hadn’t exactly been the type to let him try. He’d known that Agent Luna was female, but he had no idea what this human went by, and he was unfamiliar with human naming conventions, so that gave him no clue either.
Eventually he realised that he hadn’t told them his name, and murmured, “Tarann.” It seemed fairly safe out here, and most of the people who might want revenge on him for his line of work knew him as Triskelion anyway.
“Where are you staying?” Lex asked as they got back to work, keeping their head turned towards him a little so that he could still talk to them while they polished glasses and took orders from the odd patron.
“Out of town,” he said.
Lex paused halfway through pouring a bottle of something frothy and blue into a glass the size of a small bucket. “There’s nothing out of town…”
“My ship’s out there. Dead in the water, as it were,” he offered, taking another sip of his brandy. “This is excellent, by the way…”
His compliment was met with a grin, but the gesture quickly faded. “You’re not seriously sleeping in your dead ship out in the hills, are you?” they asked.
“Why would that be a problem?”
“You’re lucky the scavengers haven’t found you and stripped your ship - and you - bare…”
He tilted his head and blinked his four golden eyes at them. “I haven’t seen any sign of anyone out there except me. And the odd varanus…”
Lex winced dramatically. “Nasty fuckers those…”
Tarann nodded, rolling his right ankle. “Indeed.”
After a pause, Lex looked like they were about to say something, but the crash of glass on the other side of the room stopped them. “Shit, not those two again,” they hissed, and Tarann looked around just as a fight broke out for real this time.
They grabbed the blaster he’d seen before and the little speaker that emitted the unpleasant noise, and strode off around the bar, ignoring him completely where he sat. He had eased his lean, muscular frame onto a bar stool to take the weight off his frankly rather bruised and sore feet. The unpleasant sound seemed to do nothing for these two as they scrapped - all arms and teeth and roars, and even when Lex shot a quick, low-energy blast into the stone floor beside one of their feet, they didn’t break it up.
He should stay out of it. The human had guts, for sure, but the two creatures that were fighting were large and aggressive, and he didn’t want to draw attention to himself. A stray flail of the tip of one of their tails caught Lex in the face and they staggered back, yelling and spitting curses.
Making his mind up, he slid off the stool and approached the brawling patrons. Grabbing the nearest one by the scruff of their reptilian neck, he yanked hard and backed towards the doors of the bar, clearly catching them completely by surprise. Top thugs never expected to be bested by anyone, and it gave him a good few minutes of stunned compliance. Tossing them out onto the street with a snarl of his own seemed to sober that one up a mite, and a second later the other creature was booted out of the door with another curse, leaving Lex framed in the open doorway, blaster raised, face slightly bruised and utterly thunderous.
Something happened then in Tarann’s body that he was not expecting. A sharp, unfamiliar pang of arousal shot down his spine and fanned out through his entire nervous system. He shivered, a low-frequency rumble escaping him without permission. There was something about seeing a creature that should have been vulnerable in this situation - could have been crushed - standing there with a bruised face and blazing eyes, staring down two enormous beings three times their size, that made him hot all over. It was like mating season, or at least, his vague recollection of it from a brief talk at the Facility to explain that none of them would ever experience any of that because they had essentially had it edited out of their DNA. He’d escaped the Facility and joined the Agency and had never experienced the slightest tinge of lust since a brief flare in his teens. He bit those memories down and looked back at Lex.
“Thanks,” they grinned as the two brawlers separated and headed off in opposite directions down the street, yelling curses over their shoulders in their various languages. “How’d you feel about another brandy?”
He nodded and followed them back inside, watching the way their legs moved - their legs hinged forwards at the knee, which was intoxicatingly the opposite way to his own, their hips swaying rather alluringly.
“Listen,” Lex said as Tarann closed his fingers around his second glass of fiery brandy that evening. “If you’d like somewhere to stay, I’ve got a job opening here for a bouncer. The last girl I had got into trouble with some bounty hunter and had to scarper, but it comes with the offer of a room, use of the kitchen out the back, and a steady pay. It’s not great, but if I get tips, I’ll share them with you.”
Tarann blinked. “You can’t be serious…”
“Why not?” Lex shrugged, refilling a container with a viscous, silvery sauce that crackled softly as it sank into the jar.
Barely suppressing a shudder at the offending liquid, he made a mental note to avoid that at all costs, whatever the fuck it was supposed to be or go with.
Lex caught him staring sidelong at the fluid and laughed. “One of a small number of things on the menu that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone except a hazmat droid, or an Efulgari bombardier -” they added nodding across the room to where a frankly enormous creature sat waiting patiently, presumably for the bucket of viscous gloop in Lex’s hands. “Now, do you have to get back to your ship tonight, or do you want to stay here and think it over? You can let me know what you decide in the morning.”
He scowled softly; wary and distrustful. “You’d just let me stay?”
Lex shrugged again. “You’ve already earned your keep for tonight,” they grinned, revealing hopelessly small teeth. How could they hope to defend themselves with those? His own, by comparison, were two rows of viciously pointed fangs that could rip open the jugular of most of the known species that didn’t have exoskeletons, and even some that did.
“Alright,” he said. “I’ll think it over.”
Lex left him in peace after that for an hour or so, but when the patrons began to trickle out into the night, they returned to him and asked, “Want to head up to your room?”
He nodded silently, and followed Lex through a door behind the bar and upstairs.
“That’s my room,” Lex said, nodding at a door with peeling teal paint which stood ajar on his right. “And this is yours. It’s not much, but it’s comfortable and I kept it pretty clean. There might be just a little bit of dust…”
Again, Tarann just nodded his understanding and set his small pack down gently beside the bed. The room was indeed humble, but that wasn’t an issue. He didn’t have many belongings anyway; just Menot in their portable device and some clothes and local coin. “It’s fine,” he said, turning round to find Lex leaning against the door frame in a way that spoke of casual trust and again made his skin flush hot. Embarrassed, he looked away, but Lex didn’t seem to mind, or perhaps they didn’t notice.
“Kitchen is downstairs - it’s the only other door than the one that leads to the bar. You can’t miss it. Help yourself. See you tomorrow, I guess?” they smiled, running a hand through their hair and messing it all up in a way that did nothing to help the rising temperature of his skin or the syncopated lurching of his twin hearts in his chest.
With a final nod from Tarann, Lex left him for the night.
He heard them closing up about an hour later, and then caught the steady tread of their footsteps on the metal stairs, the squeak and click of their door, the sound of clothes hitting the floor, and, another few moments later, the gush of hot water. In the corner of his own room was a sink, so he splashed the dust and grime off his face and decided to ask about a shower in the morning.
The rhythm of his life for the next few weeks was considerably easier than the first had been. Menot kept him abreast of activity both regarding his ship - nothing, mercifully - and the Agency. After three weeks working for Lex, the two had become the very thing he had always shied away from. Assassins don’t form attachments; they don’t form friends. Do the job, get out cleanly, and move on. That was how he lived, and yet, the regular ebb and flow of patrons - most of them familiar by now, a few of them new - and the easy manner of the ballsy human who ran the place lulled him quietly into a new life.
He constantly tried to remind himself that it was a borrowed life; a cover, almost. This cosy existence with its easy repartee between them and the comfort of a soft bed and regular meals was not his to keep, and he would have to shrug it off the moment that he was given the all-clear.
One evening, seemingly at random, Lex closed up early.
“What’s up, boss?” he asked as Lex politely shooed the last drunken creature out of the door and locked it behind her six scuttling legs. “What’s going on?” His natural instincts set him suddenly on edge all over again, perhaps because he’d grown so complacent of late. He didn’t like changes to patterns. It had taken him a little while to relax into this one, and even then, he didn’t exactly ease up on the vigilance.
Lex grinned at him like they’d won some kind of cash-prize, hands balled into fists at their hips, and announced, “It’s my birthday.”
He frowned. “What… What does that mean? You’re… You’re giving birth?” He looked at Lex’ body and couldn’t see any indication that they were carrying some form of offspring.
Lex gave a huge snort and bent nearly double laughing.
“Apparently not,” Tarann mumbled. “Apologies.”
“No,” Lex waved, straightening up again. “I’m sorry, it’s… that just… caught me off guard. No, I’m not giving birth to anything today or ever. It’s…” and then they fell quiet, almost sad, and said, “You really don’t know what a birthday is?”
He shook his head, feeling unsettled.
“Huh,” they mused. “Well, simply put, it’s a celebration of the day I was born. Back on Earth, we celebrate them roughly every 365 days because that’s one complete orbital cycle of our planet around our Sun. Roughly. Give or take a decimal point or two…”
They stared at him and he grew even more uncomfortable. Birthdays were not something celebrated at the Facility where he’d been… raised. The old scar in his neck where their implant had been throbbed and his skin changed colour quietly from grey to a dark blue.
Lex took a step closer and placed their fingertips on his upper forearm. It wasn’t the first time Lex had touched him, but it was the first touch like that; gentle, careful, concerned. “What does that mean?” Lex asked softly.
Tarann wanted to run, but instead he forced himself to ask, “What does what mean?”
“That colour change? I’ve worked out a few already. You go a kind of bright blue when you’re super embarrassed, but I’ve not seen you turn that colour before…”
“You noticed,” he said with a half-smirk, revealing all his dangerous teeth behind his thin lips.
Lex twitched a shoulder but didn’t let go of his arm. “It’s hard not to notice you,” they said voice shifting lower in pitch. “I love watching your skin change. You know, it reminds me of these old antique lamps back on Earth… they’re called ‘lava lamps’ but they’re not actually made of lava. It’s wax or something. Anyway, when you turn them on, they get hot, and the wax inside floats to the top of the liquid in a blob, and when it cools down a bit, it sinks down again. They’re super old and rare now, but some of them change colour slowly, and it’s kind of hypnotic. I remember going to a museum and staring at one for ages. It’s like that with your skin.”
They circled their thumb over a small area of his arm and he shuddered.
“I think it’s beautiful…” And then Lex’ skin flushed and he caught the way their pulse throbbed in their neck, the veins and arteries so close to the surface as to be impractically vulnerable, but they didn’t seem to want to protect it with armour. “Anyway,” they blurted, releasing him so quickly that he actually swayed a bit at the loss of contact, “I didn’t mean to embarrass you. What was I saying?”
“It’s your birthday,” he croaked after a pause.
“Yeah, so, uh… I figured maybe we could do something? There’s an Earth recipe involving pasta that I’ve finally managed to get all the ingredients for and I wanna make it. You game?”
“Game?”
“You want to help me?”
“Oh. Sure.”
Lex deflated a little. “You can take the night off if you’d rather.”
“No,” he said firmly. It never hurt to add to his knowledge.
“Ok then,” they smiled, and he caught the way their shoulders dropped a little, the muscles relaxing again. He’d answered correctly.
In fact, the meal ended up tasting alright. Human food seemed strange to him, and perhaps a little bland, but after the protein blocks he’d been raised on, anything tasted alright compared to those. What really made his evening was Lex’ obvious enjoyment. Their eyes were sparkling and alive, like jewels, and they laughed a lot.
They also made some significant inroads into the fiery brandy afterwards, and ended up slumped against Tarann’s left shoulders, smiling softly and running their fingertips over the slight, flattened bumps in his skin along his forearms.
“I can’t believe you have four arms,” they said, their voice slurred and their eyes vague.
Tarann, who wasn’t drunk, shifted slightly and jostled them. They snuggled up again immediately in a new position which forced him to put both his arms around their shoulders as they lay against this chest this time, and giggled. “Why not?” he asked, because he wasn’t sure what else to ask. They were beautiful and strong and tough at work in the bar and during the day, but he got to see a different side before and after work. The fatigue, the loneliness, the gentle-heartedness was never on show for the patrons of their scruffy, homely bar, but for him, they showed all that and more. Now, unwinding even further as the alcohol took effect, Lex became even more talkative than usual, which was saying something.
“Because you’ve got four!” they exclaimed, as if it was blindingly obvious. “And four eyes. I like your eyes. They’re like crocodile eyes.”
Tarann had no idea what a crocodile was and wasn’t sure if it was a compliment or not.
“And you said you’ve got two hearts?”
“Mmm,” he nodded, feeling brave and bringing his lower hand to rest quietly on Lex’s stomach as it rose and fell. Their body was warmer than his and he liked the tingling that ran across his skin at the touch.
Lex fell surprisingly silent for a while, their fingertips still trailing idle lines along his skin, until they looked up into his face from their slouched position - now with their head in his lap - and asked, “What did you do before you came here?”
Faced with the utterly open honesty in those deep eyes, he found himself suddenly unwilling to lie or even bend the truth. “I was a contract killer. I am still a contract killer. I’m just… lying low for a while.”
Lex blinked. “That explains it,” they muttered, eyes turning back to his arms.
They hadn’t even flinched at the revelation, which set a different prickling running across his nerves. “Explains what?”
“The way you watch people. You don’t see people though, do you. You see soft bits and armoured bits, dangerous bits and weak bits. You see exits from a room and weapons where there shouldn’t be any…”
Inhaling softly, he nodded. “Yes. Does that bother you?”
They shook their head. “No. But it makes me sad.”
“Why?”
“Because you… you haven’t really lived… have you?”
“I don’t understand.”
Lex lurched to sit upright then, dislodging Tarann’s hands from their stomach and swivelling to face him, their eyes now blazing with intensity. “You don’t think I’ve noticed the way you react when I touch you?”
The leap from ‘not living’ to ‘reaction to being touched’ was too great a one for him to follow and he narrowed his golden eyes in confusion.
Lex’s face softened and they climbed awkwardly into his lap, swaying slightly. The sudden, warm weight of their body so close to his own stole his breath for a moment and he felt his skin change from grey to acid blue to a dull pink and finally back to grey in the space of a few heartbeats. “See?” they murmured, rolling their hips invitingly and smiling as a low-frequency mating rumble left him before he had realised what he was doing. “You come alive beneath that touch…”
“I…” he began but stopped when he realised he had no idea what he was going to say. It was perfectly true. He did feel utterly different when Lex was touching him. “I’ve never… There’s never been any need.”
“What do you mean?” they asked, placing their hands on his chest, one over each thudding heart.
Tarann became almost painfully aware of his rasping breathing, the way his body was heating up, the stuttering rhythm of his hearts, the tingling in his groin that he’d never bothered to explore, even alone… “I was created to become a weapon. I was incubated and hatched in a facility which created weapons. They sterilised us before we were even born.”
Lex did look shocked at that. “Fuck… that’s… that’s so heartless… But even so, I can’t have kids, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to get my dick wet from time to time…”
Tarann, again, didn’t understand. Lex was speaking Federation Common, but the nuances that the human put into their words were frequently lost on him.
Seeing his confusion, Lex laughed, rolled their hips again, and this time Tarann noticed something a little different at the front of their pants, a hardness that hadn’t been there - or hadn’t been as prominent - a few minutes earlier. “I still like to have sex,” they grinned.
“Oh.”
“You don’t have to have sex though,” they went on. “I’m just saying, it’s ok to let someone close. And to enjoy that. However you want to.”
“Oh.”
Lex laughed and tipped their head back a little, looking free and relaxed again now that Tarann’s confusion had been cleared up. Being unsteady with alcohol, however, they kept tipping back until Tarann was forced to grab them with both sets of hands to stop them toppling off; one pair around the waist and another around the arms.
“Steady,” he smiled. “I think maybe you should have some water. And head up to bed.”
“You’re probably right. I had a good birthday though,” they added, gently peeling the three fingers of Tarann’s lower right hand off their waist and bringing it up to their lips. The gesture they left there Tarann knew was called a kiss. Humans weren’t unique among lifeforms in nuzzling intimate parts of their anatomy against the other’s, but the strangeness of it for his species held an instant fascination. How could their lips be so soft? How could he never have done that? How could he never have wanted to share this kind of experience with anyone before?
And before he could stop it, his skin flushed a deep maroon all over like a drop of ink on wet paper, splotched here and there with dark purple. He knew what that meant for his species, and the sight of his own skin changing to the colours of an individual receptive to mating made him freeze.
“Well,” Lex chortled amusedly. Apparently they knew what it meant as well.
“No,” he said immediately, though he wasn’t quite sure what it was he was rejecting.
With a knowing but slightly melancholic smile, Lex clambered out of his lap and stood up. “Night, Tarann,” they said as they walked away. Their hands brushed against the door frame as they left the bar, and he stared at the spot where their fingers graced the woodwork even as their footsteps vanished up the stairs.
His skin did not change back that night, no matter how much he willed it to change. Half an hour later, as he lay in his bed, the sounds of Lex pleasuring themselves reached his acutely sensitive ears. The tiny, muffled moans and grunts that left their body set his skin aflame all over again. He moved one hand cautiously, experimentally down his torso to the slit where, to his astonishment, he was slick and sensitive. He gasped at the touch, and the three delicate, tentacle-like cocks which normally never left the sheath began to unfurl almost curiously into his hand.
Ordinarily, this might have repulsed him, but the sound of Lex gasping and the slick sounds that accompanied the moans, made the tentacles of his genitalia coil demandingly around his fingers. He knew almost nothing about his own species’ reproductive habits because he knew he would never need them. ‘You will never be a breeder,’ they had said when he’d hit sexual maturity - the first time he’d even bothered to explore his body, and, until that night, the last - and that had been that.
Sparks of pleasure shot through his whole body and he began to croon, the sound deep in his throat, rumbling and vibrating like an idling engine, filling the room. He couldn’t stop it. Balling his fingers into a fist, he felt his three pale cocks coil around it instinctively, and he began to kneed exploratively at the inside of the flower-shape they made around his hand, a thin, extremely sensitive membrane stretching between them from the root to about a third of the way down. The pleasure that that elicited made his back arch of the bed and his toes scrunched up the sheets as he lifted his hips too, pressing harder at the centre of the three smooth, increasingly slick tentacles.
Forcing himself to focus back on the sounds of Lex as they apparently approached their climax, he felt a wall of heat building in him. Something was approaching, and he let it sweep over him until the three tentacles surrounding his balled-up fist pulsed, gripping his hand tight as a vice, and warm fluid spurted from their centre over his clenched fingers in a series of messy gushes. His vision went white, his body went rigid, and his mind went completely blank.
Tarann floated in a blissful haze for a long time before he could even bring himself to move, his cocks too sensitive, his hand covered in sticky, slick release, but eventually his cocks retreated back into the sheath in his lower abdomen and he felt able to sit up. His hand was a mess, his lower body too, and when he tried to stand, his muscles felt shaky and weak, as though he’d run the training simulation at the facility for an entire day without breaks.
With his skin so sensitive that it was hard to fall asleep that night. Lex must have finished during his own orgasm because he never heard another noise from their room that night. Shame curled in to replace the pleasure as he realised that he’d eavesdropped on something that was private and not meant for his hearing, and in the morning, he could barely look Lex in the eye as he entered the kitchen in search of breakfast.
Lex, however, smiled warmly. The effects of the alcohol the previous night seemed only to have made their voice drop a little and their reactions were groggy and slower. “I think I'm going to keep the bar closed today,” they announced as they poured themselves a hot drink. “You’re not hungover at all, are you?”
“No,” he replied. “It takes more than that to get me drunk, let alone hungover.” ‘Hungover’ was a term he’d only learned since working for Lex.
“So…” Lex asked a little while later as they cooked breakfast for the two of them the hob. “If you’re only here to lie low for a while, do you know how long you’ll actually be here?”
“No.” Apparently Lex hadn’t been so drunk that they didn’t remember their conversation last night. He paused and added, “But the last transmission the Agency sent me indicated that the people who were looking into the disturbance after my last contract were no longer investigating.”
“So… not long then.”
“Probably.”
Lex poked at the pan with a wooden spatula and sighed.
“Why do you ask?”
He could see the way Lex’s jaw worked from side to side for a moment and recognised it as one of their tells. They were upset. “You think you’ll miss me when you leave?”
“Of course I will,” he said. “You’ve been extremely generous to me when I did nothing to earn it.”
“Right.”
Tarann knew he’d said the wrong thing immediately, but none of his intense training had prepared him for this kind of situation. He backtracked through the conversation, searching for something he could have said differently, something he could have handled better. Lost, he asked falteringly, “Will… you miss me? Is that what this is about?”
Lex nodded without turning around. “Yeah,” they said, voice cracking slightly. They cleared their throat and poked at breakfast again. It smelled ready but they didn’t seem ready to turn around.
Tarann stepped closer, his feet silent on the stone floor, and placed his hands boldly on Lex’ hips. The human immediately eased and leaned back, resting their weight against his body, though their head barely came midway up his chest. Taking the opportunity at last and sensing it would be welcome, Tarann brought his hand up and stroked his fingers gingerly through Lex’ hair. It was every bit as soft as he’d thought it would be, and he watched his skin change colour beneath the strands as they brushed over his fingers. Lex moaned quietly.
When he lowered his hand and Lex saw the maroon fading back to grey, they smiled and turned around, switching the hob off as they did. They put their own hands on his chest and he ached suddenly to have nothing separating them; to remove his close-fitting space-suit top and Lex’ loose-fitting shirt. As Lex slid one palm tentatively up to his neck, he felt the touch in a wave of heat and closed his eyes. His fingers tightened on Lex’ hips and Lex moaned softly.
“I want you,” Lex murmured. “I thought about you last night.”
Tarann opened his eyes a crack and blinked softly. “I heard you,” he admitted.
“Yeah?” Lex laughed, looking part bashful and part turned on. “What did you do when you heard me?”
“I…” he flushed neon blue and stepped back, ashamed.
“Hey,” they breathed, chasing after him. “It’s alright. It’s… really hot that you did that while thinking about me.”
“You don’t mind?”
They shook their head. “If you wanted to try together…”
That mating call thundered through him and he lowered his forehead, bringing it to touch Lex’.
“That a yes?”
“What about breakfast?”
“I overcooked it all already,” they laughed. “It’s ruined.”
Grabbing his hand, they tugged him out of the kitchen and back upstairs to their room.
They shed their clothes in a tangle, and once again Tarann was left staggered and enchanted by the human’s body. This time it was the sheer vulnerability of it. He could also see their arousal plainly - there was no sheath to tease - and something about that made his own sheath throb so hard he let out another mating croon.
“Fuck, that sound is so hot,” Lex gasped, lying back on the bed and tugging him down atop them. “Look at you,” they added, running their fingers down his heaving chest and playing with his sheath as he collapsed atop them. “I’ve always found Tch’larians attractive, but you… the way you move, the way you shudder when I touch you, the way you fucking croon like that…” He did it again - entirely involuntarily - as Lex crooked two fingers and delved carefully into his sheath, catching the inner walls of his three cocks inside and making them unfurl even quicker than they had last night.
They wrapped around Lex’ fingers and Lex moaned. “I want those on my cock… please…” they gasped, and Tarann felt like he might die if he didn’t do as Lex asked. His body was so tight all over, his skin flushing from dusky pink to dark magenta with every deep, sonorous groan that escaped him.
With one leg on each side of Lex’ thighs, he lowered his hips down until they were touching, and his cocks immediately curled around Lex’ own hard cock, covering it in weeping, slick fluid. Lex let out a string of curses and flung their head back into the bed beneath them, rutting their hips up into Tarann’s grip. The pressure of the tip of their cock against the point where the three cocks joined inside him made him growl with pleasure, his maw full of teeth opening, his saliva starting to fill his mouth, bright blue tongue lashing behind them.
“You know…?” Lex panted, thrusting up into the wet heat of the grip that his tentacle cocks had around theirs.
“Know what?” he snarled back, shaking from the effort of holding himself upright over Lex.
Lex reached up to his face with a fingertip and trailed it around his drooling mouth before putting it in his own and sucking. The sight of it sent Tarann into a fury of lust for some reason, and only then did he recall that his saliva was poisonous to many species. Before he could warn Lex, the human grinned and their eyes went wide, pupils blown until their irises were a mere whisper of colour. Apparently he wasn't poisonous to humans. Quite the contrary if the way Lex fucked upwards into his body and filled him with sparking pleasure with each thrust was anything to go by.
“Fuck, I’m close,” Lex hissed, and Tarann felt his cocks contract around the hard length inside him.
He didn’t have the breath or the words to agree.
“I’m… I -” Lex cried out, and suddenly heat flooded the inside of Tarann’s sheath and he felt his own cocks clench and pulse rhythmically around Lex’ cock as he came too. He drew every drop from Lex that they had inside them as his own orgasm rolled through him and left him mute, panting, and thrumming all over.
“Fuck that was intense,” Lex chuckled some while later, when Tarann’s cocks had finally let go of their own softening cock. “Are you ok?”
“Mmm,” he rumbled from his new position, slumped on the bed beside Lex, his trio of cocks lying limply across his torso, splayed out and spent and utterly sensitive.
Lex sat up, heedless that their own body was covered in their combined release, and trailed their fingers down Tarann’s torso towards his still pulsing sheath. “Can I?” they asked.
Tarann didn’t reply but he responded with a shrug. He had no idea what Lex intended, but he trusted them. What Lex did was to lean forwards and take one of his cocks into his mouth and suck on it gently. Tarann’s whole body lurched and he bellowed at the sheer volume of the sensation as it thundered in his head and under his skin all over again.
“Too much?” Lex laughed.
“No?” he gasped, trying to steady his spinning head and suddenly racing hearts. “No. Definitely not too much. Just…”
“Intense?” Lex supplied.
“Do it again?”
Lex did.
You encountered more kinds of xeno-anatomy in your first sixmonths aboard the ship than you’d seen in your whole six years of med schoolback on Earth. This was an alliance battle cruiser, so you had a regular stream of everyshape and size of soldier imaginable coming through the med bay.
The ship’s doctor, Maehve, was a seven foot tall J’Hantahriwho brooked no nonsense when it came to her med bay. It tended to keep thenewer recruits from going there on a whim to get out of training exercises, andsoldiers who had a firm hand tended to sit still long enough to get patched up.
Maehve had four stomachs and you suspected that all of themwere made of iron, because you’d never seen her so much as flinch as shetreated detached shells, torn limbs, shattered horns, acid-spit burns, rupturedthese and broken those. She also liked to boss you around, which grated. Youached to be the one giving orders for a change, but with your rank, the chancesof that were lower than your chances of finding a decent chocolate bar on board.
One sol, the First Officer himself was brought into the medbay with a huge blaster wound in his ribcage. Apparently a mission to a hostileplanet for negotiations had failed and they’d barely made it out at all.
The hulking Kharmorian was even taller than Maehve, and hewas twice as wide. His skin was black as ink, and covered in microscopic flecksof pearly white, like stars in the endless view from the observation deck. Sixeyes, arranged three on each side of his head, glared out from a flat face,with slit nostrils that flared occasionally as his pain mounted. Thick, viscousdrool was occasionally known to slip from a mouth that was full of razor sharpteeth, cylindrical, transparent, and gleaming like polished crystal, and hisjaw unhinged to gape wide enough to swallow your entire head whole if he wasreally in a rage. Or in the canteen after a workout.
In short, he was nine foot of pure muscle, and rumour had ithis saliva was poisonous. But that might just have been his temper.
And here he was, cursing in his guttural, native Kharmorian,and looking like he was about to try and eat Maehve whole, her chitinousplating be damned. Inadvisable, youthought with a smile.
His muscles were gorgeous as he gripped the edge of thestretcher, snapping and snarling as Maehve lowered her mandibled face towardthe wound and chittered angrily before prodding carefully with one of her morehumanoid hands. She had a lot of hands.
He hissed at her, and as his mouth opened, you saw the hugeteeth, transparent and beautiful in the harsh light of the med bay. He had two tongues, you discovered, biting yourlip to keep from smiling. He was really very beautiful, if… intimidating.
“Don’t you dare take that tone with me,” Maehve rattled,utterly unfazed by his display, her dry voice full of command.
To your astonishment, the massive First Officer went utterlystill. His torso was still clenched, however, and Maehve twitched her head likea mantis. She cuffed him on the side of his head. She actually cuffed the First Officer as though hewere no more than a disobedient child to be disciplined.
“Lie back down. Don’t move.”
Again, an almost imperceptible shiver ran through him, andhe went slack on the gurney.
“Good.”
His legs, thick and muscular and speckled with morepearlescent white dots, shook and he tipped his head back, all six of his eyesclosing.
Interesting.
His name was Ornorx, and he stayed in the med bay for aweek. During that time it was your job as Maehve’s assistant to care for him,to change his bandages, and to give him his injections to ward off infection.Kharmorians, you discovered, had very tough outer skin, but once it wasdamaged, they were surprisingly vulnerable to foreign pathogens.
At first, he was every bit as aggressive and terrifying ashis reputation suggested he would be.
You knocked on his door before entering the little room setaside for him, and he immediately began to growl. The low rumble of it filledthe room, resonating strangely in your ears as though there was an additionalmuch lower frequency that you could barely hear. Perhaps there was.
“Don’t think I’m going to let you anywhere near me, human,”he snarled, saliva thick on his teeth as he opened his mouth.
“Don’t think I’m so easily intimidated, First Officer Ornorx,”you said tartly, hoping you sounded a lot braver than you felt.
He opened that disconcerting jaw at you then, as wide as itwould go, and hissed and screeched softly.
“Stop that. And lie down, or you’ll undo all Maehve’s hardwork,” you barked, trying your best to imitate the tone of voice the J’Hantahridoctor had used with him when he’d first been brought in.
To your astonishment, his teeth clacked shut and he lay backdown on the bed, meek as a lamb.
“Good,” you said, recalling another detail of that firstencounter. And exactly as expected, a shudder ran through him. “Very good,” you purred softly as youapproached with the fresh dressings.
He looked up at you then, an odd light in his six eyes.
You smiled down at him, soft, rewarding, but with a hint of somethingelse. You liked this. You liked having someone as powerful as him givethemselves to your control. You were growing hot between the legs just thinkingof it. Oh shit. Not now.
He made to sit up then, and without thinking you shot out a handand pressed it into his hard chest. He had ridges of bone and muscle that werevery obviously different from your own anatomy, but at the lightest pressurefrom your splayed fingertips, he sank back down.
“Stay there,” you said in an even, rich voice. “Don’t movewhile I do this.”
Again, he shuddered, and you smiled.
You developed a pattern after that; a kind of dance betweenthe two of you. The moment you entered the room, he would snarl at you, fangsdripping, jaw unhinging, two tongues laving along his sharp teeth, in a displayof power and threat.
On his last sol in the med bay, you tried something new.Instead of speaking to him after his usual snarls, you simply cocked aneyebrow.
He twitched his head at that and went still, keeping all sixof his eyes on you, like a predator in a cage.
He looked massive onthe tiny med bay bed, his taloned feet sticking out from under the sheet, hishuge shoulders rippling with tightly corded muscle. Honestly, he really didlook like a predator, ready to spring from his lair and devour you. You wantedto feel those tongues on your body. You’d brought yourself to completion, everynight since he’d been brought in, thinking about both those tongues workingacross your skin while you stood over him, a collar around his neck and a ropein your hand.
You’d seen a sweeter side of him too. You’d been doingcombat training as well to bolster your skills, and had taken a viciousbackhand to the face from an armour-plated Anjari, and the bruise had spreadacross your cheekbone and eye-socket to leave a tender welt. The moment he’dseen it, he’d tilted his head to one side and asked you who’d hurt you.
You’d brushed it off, but if you’d said you hadn’t added hisconcerned expression to your mental picture of him desperately trying to pleaseyou while you teased and dominated the living daylights out of him, well… you’dhave been lying.
Having cocked one eyebrow at him, having not opened yourmouth, having not deigned to look at him longer than a heartbeat or two, yousighed and set down the tray of dressings and syringes on the far side of theroom. You pretended to check your coms device, idly running your thumb over thescreen, feigning interest in some old messages in your inbox.
You could feel himwatching you.
“Something more interesting than me?” he snarled.
“Be with you in a moment,” you commented without looking up.
He growled again, that oddly resonant sound that made heatcoil in your groin. You longed to tell him to make that sound again, just foryou, but you kept scrolling.
Then, to your astonishment, the growl changed timbre. Itrose, finishing in a desperate, if extremely short, whine. You looked at himthen.
Were the little pearlescent pin-pricks on his skin glowing?He had a few on his cheekbones, forming two perfect little half moons under hiseyes, and you’d definitely never noticed them before. His skin was so black itseemed to absorb all light. It was truly beautiful.
He was no longer looking at you, his eyes focused on theceiling, body rigid, as though with embarrassment.
You inhaled slowly, as though displeased, and slid your comunit back into your pocket. “Impatient, are we, First Officer?” you drawled.
Coming to a halt beside his bunk, you stared at him, onehand on your hip, the other holding the tray like a cocktail waitress.
“Miss my touch that much, did we?”
He didn’t even have it in him to growl at you this time. He justlicked his lips and stared back at you. You’d been sounding him out all week,and you were now almost 100% sure he wanted this.
One final test, just to be sure.
You held your tongue for a moment, wondering. You could getkicked off the ship for this. If you were wrong, you could be sent back toEarth in disgrace. But what was life without a little risk?
You began to prep his dressings, but when you were done, youheld the scissors out in front of his mouth and said, “Hold these.”
Unquestioningly, his mouth opened and he wrapped bothtongues around the closed blades of the scissors, drawing them down to restbetween his teeth. His eyes never left your face. His clawed hands nevertwitched.
“Good,” you smiled. Dareyou do it? “Good boy.”
He whined at that and closed his eyes. Drool began to leakfrom the corner of his wide mouth in a way that made you think of ball gags.
You leaned close to his face and put a hand on his smooth,cool chest. His two sets of lungs weren’t enough to help him draw in breath asyou whispered, “Now… Don’t move. But tell me if this hurts too much.”
A huge, shivering tremble rippled through his enormous body.One of his two thick, black tongues uncurled from the scissors in his mouth andhe tried to mop the saliva from his lips as it dribbled down his chin to hisneck.
“Leave that,” you scoffed, and the tongue stopped. “I toldyou not to move.”
It was as you looked down and lifted the covers just enoughto reveal his wounded side that you saw the sizable tent in the sheets furtherdown his body.
His breath was wheezing now, like a horse run too hard fortoo long, and you stared at the hard ridges at the base of his neck. Hissecondary nostrils, connecting directly to the secondary lungs, had opened,something you’d never seen before. He was more desperate than he was lettingon.
In a smooth motion you slid the sheet all the way back and heldyour breath. He was completely naked beneath the covers. Your eyes didn’tlinger, though it was unbelievably hard to tear your eyes away from the two, ridged cocks that had slipped out froma slit in his lower abdomen, both dripping with white fluid, one slightlylarger than the other.
Deliberately, you ignored them as best you could, andfocused on dealing with the wound. It was almost healed, and didn’t really needthe dressing you were about to apply. “Keep still,” you murmured, pressing ahand on his torso, between the wound and those two weeping cocks. They squirmedslightly as your fingers splayed across his skin; flexible and muscular, theywere very beautiful. He was fightinghard to retain his composure.
“This might hurt,” you smiled, readying the syringe. Youlowered the needle to the ragged edges of the blaster wound, and when you hadlined it up, just pricking the skin, you turned your eyes to find his alreadylocked on you. “Don’t. Look. Away.”
He nodded and his cocks both twitched, writhing now withmore intensity, white liquid leaking down their length and pooling on thatmidnight skin of his. The pinpricks of white all over his skin began to glownow. As you emptied the syringe into him and pulled it away, you smiled. “Verygood. You didn’t move at all.”
Then he let out a low whine that disintegrated into a raggedsigh.
Saliva had run down his face and soaked into the pillowbeneath his head, and you moved your fingers slowly up to take the scissorsfrom between his teeth. “Give me those.”
He released them instantly, his two tongues working aroundhis mouth to clean himself up. You decided to let him this time.
“Two tongues, two cocks,” you chuckled. “You reallyare full of surprises, aren’t you, First Officer Ornorx?”
“You have no idea,” he panted.
You smiled. You certainly had some idea by now. “Well, perhaps when you’re all healed up, you canshow me what else you’ve been keeping from me,” you said.
As you pulled the sheet back up his body, you deliberatelyskimmed your fingertips torturously over his two cocks and his entire bodylurched wildly.
A cry left his lips before he could stop it. “If you so muchas breathe a word…” he hissed, chest heaving, eyes rammed shut.
You turned to face him then and traced your fingers over thehalf moons on his cheekbones as tenderly as you could. “I’d never hurt you likethat,” you smiled before crossing to the door of his room. He whimpered desperatelyas you turned your back on him.
At the threshold you paused and looked over your shoulder.He was staring at you hungrily, mouth open, drooling softly again, one handalready under the covers, moving slowly.
“I’ll make sure you’re not disturbed for a while either,”you said, by way of giving him permission, and he jutted his chin to theceiling. “Try not to move too muchthough. Don’t want you undoing all my hard work. Understood?”
He grunted something softly, hand working his cocks harderbeneath the sheet.
“First Officer?” Your tone wouldn’t have been out of placeon the bridge.
“Understood,” he rasped.
“Good.”
And with just that one word, he came.
It was three sols later that you heard the knock at yourcabin door.
Opening it, you saw nothing but darkness, pricked withpoints of light. Casting your eyes upwards, you found a familiar face toweringover you. He said nothing. All six eyes stared at you with an unreadableexpression.
“Yes?” you asked coyly.
He stood there a moment longer, and for a second you thoughthe was on the point of leaving. But then he opened his mouth to reveal thosestrange and beautiful teeth. “Please?” he hissed, loud enough for only you tohear. “I can’t stop thinking about you. About… About what you did… for me… I…”he swallowed thickly.
Without a word, you stepped aside and held the door open.
He moved into your cabin and turned and stared at you. Thebruise on your cheek had a matching cut now and he brought his fingers to yourface. “You’re hurt?”
“Give me something to take my mind off it,” you smirked.“Let’s lay down some rules. The sooner we get started, the sooner you can makeme forget about that. Deal?”
“Deal.”
That wouldn’t be the first time the First Officer would findhimself on his knees, his body bound, cocks exposed and leaking, his dangerousmouth gagged and drooling, his muscles shaking, while you stood over him. Hewould come to you after training drills, after difficult meetings, afterdangerous missions. First he would see to his crew, and then he would come toyou, desperate for you to take his mind elsewhere.
The time he returned from a mission that nearly cost four ofhis team their lives, he came untouched, painting that incredible torso of hiswhite with the release of both cocks in under ten minutes. He’d also taken along time to come down after that. But with your gentle ministrationsafterwards, he did. That was the first time he told you he loved you.
What you loved most about him was the fact that someone sopowerful, who terrified all kinds of living fluid out of his crew just bylooking at them, could be so beautiful and gentle and soft, with his head inyour lap after one of your scenes.
You smiled as he purred sonorously, spent, exhausted, andutterly mellow, while you traced lines over his smooth skin and watched thosepoints of light dance and flare beneath your skating touch.
