So, I was all happy about finally being done with the splint and having my hand back. I still have a way to go before I get full use of my finger back, but PT starts Monday, so I'm on the right track.

Until.

I have to open up a claim for workers comp because my hand is going numb. I've been assigned an agent and claim number, and I saw the doctor today. She ran me through half a dozen tests and diagnosed carpal tunnel. I have an ugly wrist brace (why do they have to be black? Can't they be made to look fun yet still be functional?) that I'm to wear "when using my hand" (read: pretty much all the time) and to take ibuprofen for inflammation. We'll give it about six weeks, and if the symptoms don't ease, I'll be referred to a hand surgeon.

I was really hoping that 2020 would see me taking time off that doesn't involve a new scar.

Note to self: don't try braiding hair again one-handed. It won't stay and I'm kind of crying because I tweaked the pin in the end of my finger. That pin really doesn't want to be tweaked.

I saw the hand surgeon today. I like him. He laid out several options, based on how the tendon looks when he gets in. From best case to last resort, it ranges from tack the ends, drill & anchor the tendon, to joint fusion. Oh, and when I mentioned my anxiety with conscious sedation, he said he's fine with a light general anesthesia. Now I just have to wait for the administrative assistant to call and schedule.

I got my splint off!

I am so happy, guys. I have to make a follow-up appointment with a specialist so I can start getting mobility back, and if I'm going to do anything that might risk whacking or mashing it, I have to put the splint on. Other than that, I can leave it free or wrap a bit of tape on it for stability.

I might even be able to manage my knitting next week.

Injuring a finger is one of the most annoying injuries you can get. I injured my pinky finger last week in jiujitsu class. I didn’t really hurt. But looks like I tore or stretched the extensor tendon causing mallet finger (the last knuckle got bent too much and now I can’t straighten out the finger fully) treatment is simple enough. Just splint it for several weeks. It doesn’t really affect my dexterity that much. And I’ve gotten a pretty good diy splint set up with tape and a cut down toothpick. But it just feels dumb being injured for like 8 weeks with my finger taped up and limited training for something that didn’t even hurt that bad.

Turns out there’s a name for what’s up with my one weird finger. That’s it fully extended. I can bend all my fingers at that first joint voluntarily but that finger does not get any straighter unless I manually move the distal phalanx. All my other fingers don’t do this.

So yeah, I probably fucked up the tendon in that finger as a kid (probably by jamming it while playing one of the 30 billion sports I’ve done at least once) and just didn’t get it splinted so it healed wonky. Good news is that it doesn’t hurt me and I have full use of the finger, but goddamn. That’s wild.
