From Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, the world's greatest Maloya singer
Ralph Fleck (German, b. 1951), Alpenstück 15 III Maloya, 2018. Oil on canvas, 180 x 180 cm.
(Part 1) You know, if the original Grisha trilogy books was written by someone else (ideally a Russian adult fiction author, but that's not gonna my main point) I think Maloya (is this the ship name?) and Darklina would have been canon and M*lin@ would have been the one sided first love for Alina in her teenage years. Mal would only have had familiar love for Alina and be clueless about her crush on him, and that's why he looks at other girls and not her, because he truly had no idea about
This would have been a much better story in my opinion and one that I kept waiting for when I was reading the books. Like I just kept waiting for Alina to realise that her and M*l were not right for each other and that what she felt for him was comfort that comes from familiarity and a familial bond not romantic love. But she never did and it kind of ruined both of their characters.
A brand new compilation documenting the groundbreaking maloya scene on Réunion Island from the mid- ‘70s. Western instrumentation joins traditional Malagasy, African and Indian acoustic instruments to spark a whole era of new fusions and creativity.
Compiled by Réunionese DJ duo La Basse Tropicale, ‘Oté Maloya’ follows up last year’s acclaimed ‘Soul Sok Séga’ release.
