My manager has teacher-issues and it is giving me manager-issues.
Today my manager got into a petty fight with me because on the day of Guru Purnima, (literal translation: Teacher + Full Moon) I approved a social media post with the word "teacher" in it.
The point only came under notice because a post that celebrates teacher had a cartoon boy climbing his mountain alone, and I asked the graphic designer to go for an imagery that portrays a "teacher-figure."
That got my manager's attention and she entered the group chat with her point: teacher could be anyone — any person at all.
I agreed and I was going to type that...
But then she said, Do you even know the significance of Guru Purnima? Or what a Guru is? It could be a family member or a mentor or anyone. Why do you have to focus only on the Teacher?
Again. I agreed. But... By definition a teacher is anyone who teaches... TEACH-er. Translated into Hindi = Guru. But, this was not going to help. So instead I said...
I understand. However, this person is usually someone else. Someone other than ourselves mostly. So, the only point I had been making was that I needed a social media post that showed a person inspiring another person.
No reply.
So I said, Unless we have some other imagery that we wanna show?
Instead of replying, she turns to the graphic designer: I am surprised you accepted this content, Mr Graphic Designer (she said his name, but we are not going to use that).
Poor graphic designer rightfully says, thats not my job to curate content.
Manager then made me hunt for quotes that talk about teachers without using the word teacher
And then rejected them all and asked us to reuse the previous year's post.
...
Managers turning into a different shade of hell when you tell them you are quitting is an issue that should NOT be this normalised.
