The duality of Din and Luke’s storylines…. Coming from nothing…. Burdened with the responsibility of an entire culture…. The struggle of CHOICE and IDENTITY?? catch me sobbing
this is just something i noticed while watching the new season but the baby is definitely more expressive and talkative than he was in s1. like, i've seen people comment on the way din has grown more open and emotionally vulnerable with the child, but it's also happening vice versa! the baby's over here babbling up a storm and making little coos in reaction to a situation where he would have been silent before. he's clinging to din and blatantly asks to be picked up and curls up against his side when sleeping. he basically went "oh okay shiny metal man isn't going to leave me, time for AFFECTION"
baby yoda has connected to din so strongly so quickly because he’s not had a stable parental figure for like. 50 years. now all of a sudden there’s this nice metal man who’s saved him numerous times, who talks to him and lets him play and cause general mischief the way toddlers are supposed to, of course he’s going to latch onto that, he’s been so deprived of basic respect and care for decades
My take on the Face Scanner
There’s this scene in The Mandalorian where Djarin has to take his helmet off to scan his face and it immediately gives him access to all this data.
And we’ve all been making fun of it because it’s like, the least effective security measure there is. Anyone With a Face can get exactly what they need, so what’s the point of even having a scan?
It comes off as just an Overt Plot Device, but I think there is some logic to it.
First off, this console is in the heart of a very secure secret base. It’s assumed that you have to be imperial to even get close to the thing, so it’d be redundant if the console itself had the same security measures that the base already had.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with redundancies, especially when it comes to sensitive information, but the empire doesn’t just want to keep the information secure - they know that it needs to be regularly accessed by their people, so they want to keep track of WHO is using this machine.
If the data is mishandled within their ranks, or if they’re betrayed by one of their own, that’s something they’d need to know. So, they’re more focused on keeping track of the users, because even someone with security clearance can turn on them.
But why not do both? Why not give everyone a unique access code? Why not have the facial scan linked to a database of their people?
Let’s consider the state of The Empire at this time. It’s underground, still. It’s in hiding. Their recruitment and onboarding processes aren’t going to be as formal as they used to be. It’s probably more like, you show up to fight, they give you a gun. They’ll give you a TK number, but they probably don’t care as much about setting up your Unique Employee Gmail Account. Plus, their turnover rate is Astronomical, especially at this base. They’re losing troopers all the time, and there’s not much point in keeping a database of people who are going to be dead within a month.
They don’t think anyone is crazy enough to infiltrate their base to get to their console, so they scan your face, assuming you’re one of theirs, and if you fuck with the data, they’ll come after you later. It’s easy, it’s efficient.
It also says a lot about The Empire and how they treat their soldiers, which is in line with the later confrontation between Mayfeld and Valin Hess. They don’t care who you are. They don’t even bother to keep track. You’re expendable, unremarkable, easily replaced. It becomes especially powerful when we contrast that with the Clone Army. They were literally Manufactured Beings who were identical genetic copies, but the Jedi Generals still took the time to appreciate their uniqueness, to always use their names, to value their insight and, at times, protect them with their lives. The Republic had it’s issues, but to me, that’s what separates Good and Evil.
“Progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life. An unimportant life. A life without privilege...That's what defines an age. That’s what defines a species,” --12th Doctor, Thin Ice.
Upon witnessing Din attempt social interaction without his helmet, I have come to the conclusion that his stoic silence is not an intimidation tactic, but due to the fact this dude literally cannot hold a conversation to save his own life.
who up thinking about dick grayson's absolutely twisted relationship with desire and with his body.
- guy who has used his body for elite performance from a very very young age, which necessitates his being simultaneously very aware of exactly what his body is doing at any given time and also blithely ignoring all of its pain/danger signals
- guy who used this performance training to do violence to others, also from a very young age, meaning that he has to be very aware of not just his own body but other people's. specifically nonlethal violence adds a whole other layer because it is actually very hard to intentionally not kill someone.
- guy who is also extremely used to being Looked At, in a performance way and in a sexual way, and uses both of those as tools in his arsenal in the field. AND has both aspects used against him interpersonally
- guy who is just constantly having his autonomy undermined, once again both in the field and interpersonally. he is getting whammied like every other issue in NTT and I don't even mean the assault parts
all of these are the SAME GUY. i don't think I could design a character more likely to have a deeply fucked relationship with inhabiting a physical form if I tried! constant humming background awareness of his beautiful body and exactly what it is capable of and all of its limitations and of that body's effect on other people. perpetual knowledge that none of that will matter if the circumstances break bad enough. he will continue to try anyway.
what a rorschach blot of a character! this IS what peak performance looks like! <3
i like to ponder dick grayson's sexual problems obviously but I do think it's important to consider the not-infrequent occurrence of bruce getting like three strokes in and looking down at dick and being just utterly consumed by soul- and boner-crushing guilt about having taken this bright and beautiful boy and turned him into something violent and deeply wounded. and his cock becoming like unto a piece of wet bucatini. this is partly bruce's massive guilt complex talking (dick was, pretty crucially, already wounded when bruce got to him, and bruce did help him make something else out of his grief, and they were good for each other, and it's not like dick's prospects in juvie were particularly bright.) but also, everything else.
dick watching bruce get That Look on his face and going oh my god again?? how many times do I have to tell you I'm not going anywhere? and bruce like but that's the problem :( you should
