Her Majesty’s Favourite Artist in Residence 2016 (FAIR) Viscountess Eleri Harris of Upper Sandy Bay, Lower Sandy Bay, Battery Point, Taroona and the wider Sullivan’s Cove region. Did you know that the sorely missed comics website The Nib is about to come back online in June? On the editorial team is Tasmanian cartoonist/editor Eleri Harris. At the Zine fair (June 4th) - FAIR Eleri will be releasing a sneak peak of the first part of her extraordinary Tassie comic focusing on aspects of the Sue Neill-Fraser story. FAIR Eleri is also giving a talk with wonderful Melbourne comics hero Mandy Ord on June 9.

Australian comics makers #3

Mandy Ord Mandy Ord is a comic-maker who grew up in Canberra (Australia’s capital city) but now lives and works in Melbourne. I think Mandy’s “comics voice” is just so beautiful and idiosyncratic, her one-eyed version of herself is kind of weird when you first see it but she slowly grows to become perfectly normal. She is the comic-artist who made me fall deeply in love with the colour black.

A large amount of her comics are set in Melbourne … sometimes they are about Melbourne, such as her graphic novels Rooftops and her new comic Trains. She has been published in street-press and by larger publishing houses such as her super large collection of comics Sensitive Creatures

Sensitive Creatures

Sensitive Creatures is a collection of autobiographical stories told in comic form, by Melbourne artist Mandy Ord.

The stories are funny, anecdotal and occasionally beautifully profound. My favorite was a bizarre tale where the roles of reader and book were reversed, where a walking book comes into a shop and chooses which tiny, little writer to buy. It’s very weird, although it makes more sense than my description of it. Most of the stories reminded me of Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor.

I’m guessing Ord drew her picture with ink and a pen, but I can imagine these pictures are lino cuts, because the lines are so deep and dark. It’s a good style, suiting the claustrophobic tone of the book.

It’s also nice to read stories set in the city where I live. Makes things seem more real. Thanks to television I can accept almost any absurdity occurring in London or the United States, but tell a tale in Melbourne and suddenly things get relatable for me.

Chris Gooch and Mandy Ord will share in $5000 to develop work during a one month residency in First Site Gallery, during the gallery downtime culminating in a two week exhibition. The pair was successful in their mentorship application proposing an exhibition of comic works and the publication 'Gasoline Eye Drops'. The exhibition will explore narrative themes of anxiety and anger derived from escalating harassment and the transformative results of such an experience.
