I saw a post on tumblr the other day about Mmamoriri, who’s a Tanzanian lioness who has a mane, exhibits typically male behaviors, and is believed to have an extra Y chromosome
But many comments on this post were saying “oh transmasc lion!” or “oh genderfluid lion!”
I kinda feel like I’m losing it because, like, that’s definitely intersex erasure right? I’m perisex, so if that really wouldnt classify her as intersex sorry for being a bother, but it just strikes me as odd…
This is intersexism and intersex erasure.
Lions do not have gender identities. And they cannot "naturally" medically transition unless a human physically gives her hormones or does surgeries on her. She is developing traits that are not typical for lionesses naturally, therefore she is intersex, very much clearly. It is definitely a part of erasure in a sense to see a very clearly intersex animal be called trans or genderqueer/fluid, when that isn't how that works!
If there are transmasculine people or genderfluid people out there who resonate with mmamoriri because of her masculine traits while being CTF, that's perfectly fine, but (as a self described maned lioness, this hits closer to home) this is clearly an intersex lion and it doesn't invalidate transmasculine or genderfluid people's connection to her if they acknowledge that.
(this has happened to a lot of animals unfortunately, including female hyenas though they technically aren't intersex, because of their clitorophalluses a lot of transfems and transmascs alike compare them to being trans when that simply isn't how that works. There are plenty of cats and dogs that owners call trans because they get them neutered, or they have bottom surgery for other reasons! That's cute! Why not call that trans, ykwim? Let intersex animals be intersex.)
Anyways, I found a national geographic article talking about her [link] and she is GORGEOUS

We love mmamoriri in this household. Thank you for bringing her to my attention, she is beautiful.
Inclusive Intersex Maned Lioness!
[PT: Inclusive Intersex Maned Lioness! /End PT.]
This is a flag exclusively for any intersex person regardless of ASAB who may or may not identify with a feminine aligned gender who takes pride in ones intersexuality, and identifies with the concept of a maned lioness for any reason related to ones intersexuality.
I drew the symbol using an image of a real life maned lioness for reference. ^_^
