Egypt is a country defined by it’s great river - The Nile. All the cities, be it new or old, pharaonic or mameluk, poor or wealthy depend on the moodiness of the water. I came to truly understand that water is life. Once you leave the the meadows and the fertile lands along the river and the delta all life seems to be gone and your are left with the endless desert. For all that, life surprises us and thrives in the most inhospitable places.

In the day we visited the Manial Palace, since we where on the island we visited also the Nilometer. Now unused, it’s a structure that measures the water level during the annual flood season. It only dates as far back as AD 861 but this method was used even in the pharaonic times. I was impresed by the ceiling and the entire system, I didn’t expect it to be so beautiful.

In the south of Manial Island in Cairo you can find a beautiful little garden bordered by lime trees towards the Nile.
