medic’s little freaks are not welcome in this castle…
Manicule thumb war?
So many manicules! These little drawn hands are a favorite annotation that points to something of note in the text. We found a bunch in this 1531 copy of Christopher Saint Germain’s The Secunde Dyalogue in Englyssh bytwene a Doctour of Dyvynytye (divinity) and a Student in the Lawes of England.
What we really want to know is what do you think is happening in the second image? A thumb war? Or just a handshake?
Series 2 of my Medieval Illuminated Manuscript Stickers are now in stock!
Featuring a snail stag, dog-headed man, siren, manicule, scitalis, bat, salamander and a rabbit (murderous) inspired by medieval bestiaries and marginalia, made with real laminated risograph prints!

And yes, I have plenty of individual stickers and sets of the series 1 stickers for sale too! You could stick so many medieval beafts all over your things.
(please order by 12/17 for best chance at Christmas delivery)
Soooo...I made a species inspired by those weird looking medieval manicules with legs and tails!
Manicules are magical beings that use their eyes to absorb knowledge, which is why a lot of them work as library assistants or work in libraries of their own! They can even sense lies, as lies always "taste" pretty awful to them.
-and I drew a little Manicule family! Two husbands and their feisty 20-something son who prefers to gain knowledge by going on quests and slaying beasts!
...Names pending.
My manicule sticker in action!
A manicule is a type of annotation added to medieval manuscripts to denote the start of a paragraph or a particularly important section. The name comes from the Latin manicula, meaning “little hand”. These stickers are printed with a transparent background, and look best placed on lighter colored objects. DM me if you’d like one for yourself ($4, includes postage within USA)! I’ll also have these for sale at Craft Lake City next month.
In the future, I’m hoping to do a whole set of manuscript-inspired stickers!
