On Stereotypes

Film Rating: 6/10

A film by Joel Lamangan, Mano Po shows the Chinese Filipino culture among families in the Philippines. For me, the portrayals were mostly about stereotyping Chinese Filipinos as being one of the richest families among Filipino citizens, the famous great wall, and the usual black sheep of the family. Everything in the movie made sense because that’s how most viewers generally think of Chinese Filipino families.

Taking out all the Chinese-Filipino elements of the movie, it would look like one of the most common family films in the industry wherein a major problem would arise and in the end, the family would still be intact but only with drugs and kidnapping involved. I would rather watch a normal Filipino Family movie that deals with sibling rivalry issues and other family issues, than this film as it also looks into kidnapping as a normal thing.

Reinstating, they did well on representing the viewers’ perception on Chinese-Filipino stereotypes.

Upon having multitudinous of sequels, one would have an impression that the film Mano Po (2002) is an exceptional film. In my opinion, however, the film was not well-thought-out. This just reinforces the stereotyped “Chinese” in our society and perpetuates racism. Furthermore, this film romanticizes kidnapping. On the success of the movie – famous actors and actresses maybe?

The tale of these rich Chinese-Filipinos is sugar coated with lots of grandeur and pizzazz. Everyone should have chinky eyes, the motif should all be red, families should always eat in Chinese restaurants, and money is just in the heads of everyone.

The film just lacks depth and representation on the part of the Filipino and the Filipino-Chinese communities. Are all their lives like this, as portrayed in the film? How do you define being Chinese – From the physical appearance? The language you speak? The amount of money you have?
