the happiest illustration of odin and sleipner, like ever

Description: Óðinn riding his eight-legged horse Sleipnir as described in Snorri  Sturluson's Edda.

look at odin is so happy! despite that he clearly failing with the concept of riding a horse! and sleipner is so happy too, despite these mysterious bindings around his 8 leggies.

Creator: Jakob Sigurðsson 1727-1779  Description: Hermóðr riding Sleipnir to Hel   to try and obtain the release of Baldr. This scene is from Hermóðr´s Ride to Hel  in the Death of Baldr myth in Gylfaginning in Snorri's Edda.

Date: 1760 

not ONLY do Sleipner got razor sharp teeth here, he also got some strange binding around his leggies. terrifying!!!

strongly agrree with that person in hel, which also appear to be having problems with hands, namely all the bones appear to have diseappered from the hands. scary things going on here!

10/10, awesome jakob illustration.

these icelandic 18th century illustrations of norse mythology are priceless artistic genius. here we got the 1 cow in the universe:

Auðhumbla releasing Búri from a salty block of ice. This scene is described in a creation myth in Snorri's Edda - created 1760 source

this illustration would have given any swedish 18th century law maker a instant “death from moral panic, because WHAT IF beastiliaty????”, because damn! that does not look right...

oh no.... fenrir bit my hand off. this is slightly unfortunate, but not enough to use my facial mucles to look angry - Tyr on this illustration

also wolves, they look pigs, right?

pigs = wolves

icelandic painter anno 1760, who has clearly not seen a wolf in their entire life, while creating this illustration of Fenrir biting of Tyrs hand in the saga of: “The Binding of Fenrir”

hey fellow 18th century icelandic illustrators. a tree is just like a big flower right?- Jakob Sigurðsson, most likely

The Deluding of Gylfi

The Swedish King Gylfi, who is in disguise as Gangleri,                                presumably in the presence of Óðinn, who is represented in three forms as Þriði, Jafnhárr, and Hárr. This  scene is from the Deluding of Gylfi in Gylfaginning in Snorri's Edda.

this illustration is both hella confusing and kinda pleasing to look at. i am clearly not the intended audience of this masterpiece, but i still enjoy look at it.

THAT being said this version looks alot better hmmm

a whole new collection of funny outfits! amazing.  Jakob Sigurðsson (1727-1779) illustrations is a gift that keeps on giving.

i am getting more and more convinced that icleandic manuscript illustrators, were struggling heavily with understanding many of the nature descriptions in norse sagas, because icelandic nature is so different from scandinanvian.

here forexemple we see a “tree”in a icelandic manuscript illustration from 1680. soppused to be yggradsil, the world tree. it looks like a flower.... on the other hand! very cute flower!

i appluad the effort here, even if i am starting to doubt this illustrater had ever seen a tree.

we can also see very cute, but vaguelly confusing, illustration of several mythical animals that live in yggradsil. on the bottom we got a very cute nidhögger, which is serpent - ish, so i am satified.

i must critique Ratatorsk, the squirell though. the illustrator really let their mind free there, and was like: squirell = unicorn/cat mix. i am confused with the result.

then we got some of the grass - eating animals which eats of the leaves of yggradsil, they look ok, although, they appear to have mystical hovering in the air powers, never mentioned in the manuscripts.

at the top we those two important birds. 1 sees all, 1 hears (via gossiping ratatorsk) all and whispers it to the allseeing birds. they are fine, although they look a bit too much like.... ducks. do not look a bird that belong on the top of a tree.

all in 6/10 points for this illustration.
