This “thumb nail sketch of the Civil Rights picture” in Milwaukee speech was delivered by Alderwoman Vel Phillips to an audience of over 6,000 people before a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Milwaukee Auditorium on January 27, 1964. This document, with Phillips’ own hand-written changes, can be found in the Vel Phillips Papers (Milw MSS 231, Box 35, Folder 39) at the UWM Archives.
