the seasons are whispering. life life life. though there is death, there will be life.
March: The Month of Maple
Here in the 100-Acre Wood, March is one of the best months of the year because it is also the sweetest! March is known as Maple Month in New Hampshire, the time of year where sap is usually pouring out of the trees as the snow melts, and sugar shacks all over start filling with steam as they boil the sap down to precious maple syrup. However, this year has been slightly different. The sap just started running last week here in the 100-Acre Wood which is definitely later than recent years but well worth the wait. The 100-Acre Wood Sugar Shack is open every weekend on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the sugaring season but this upcoming weekend, Saturday, March 23rd and Sunday, March 24th, is NH Maple Weekend! This is the 24th Annual NH Maple Weekend and is hosted by the New Hampshire Maple Producers Association. The 100-Acre Wood Sugar Shack is a proud member of the NH Maple Producers Association. Sugar makers all over the state open their doors to teach visitors how that liquid gold (maple syrup) is made right here in New Hampshire. Feel free to stop by the 100-Acre Wood Sugar Shack between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm either on Saturday or Sunday this weekend for a sample of our warm maple syrup and our famous maple popcorn! Get a first-hand look at our evaporator as we cook syrup and take a walk on our maple storybook trail that will teach little ones how syrup is made!

The part where you give up trying to evaporate outside over an open flame in the cold. Snowstorm tomorrow. Its important to have #maplesyrup to accompany the milk and bread I am contractually obligated to get from the store today as a Pennsylvanian. #doubledoubletoilandtrouble #maplesugaring #ihavenoideawhatimdoing https://www.instagram.com/p/BuEh8XcAza1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=25co69s0iols

Maple Sugaring @dukefarms 🌲 . . Slide >>for more photos from our winter ❄️family trip. . . We had an amazing time learning from an extremely knowledgeable forestry expert and getting a real look at how #sugarmapletrees are drawn for #maplesyrupmaking . Even though we’ve always thought February was #maplesugaringseason , and the ideal time to go #maplesugaring - we learned that because of climate change it’s now starting in December and into January. By February/March they are almost done! . . Read about the difference in color in the syrup and the timing of when it’s drawn in my last post. . . After we learning about the different kinds of maple trees, played games, learned about what insects can cause tree disease, we saw the hobby and commercial way of producing maple syrup. . . Lastly, we purchased bottle of light maple syrup, thanked the trees, and have been enjoying it for breakfast. Check out the bottle in my instastory up top, and the #chiaseedpancakes I whipped up this morning for all of us. . . . .
