The light in the greenhouse today after harvest was so good we had to have a little mini photoshoot with the flowers. 💫 Plus we’re just so excited that things are finally blooming now that we finally have gotten some sunshine, thank you March! ☀️ ☀️☀️(Columbus is one of the top cloudiest cities, so sun in winter is kind of a big deal!!🙌🏼 I think we brought the sun back with us from Colorado. 😘) It’s still cold, but we’re hoping this is the last of the coldest stretch before the season is really on its way! #marchflowers #ranunculus #anemones #teamsmff . . . #Cbusfarmers #flowerfarmer #locallygrown #ohioflowers #farmerflorist #smffblooms #thecolumbusflowercompany #freshcutflowers (at Sunny Meadows Flower Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuuceLXHYe6/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i5niinsul3fa
Essential Japanese Seasonal Decorations - Spring
Seasonality: Mid Spring/ March
Japanese Name: Wagashi - Hana Temari
English Name: Traditional Japanese Confectionery - Flower Ball
Sakura (桜), despite not producing any useful fruit, the sakura tree became a backbone of Japanese culture and is now used in the West to represent Japan. In a spiritual sense, the sakura reminds viewers that life is short and beautiful, just like the cherry blossom that falls from the tree after just a few days. This is tied to the Buddhist roots of Japan. It’s the most commonly used symbol of mortality in all types of art. However, there is a darker side to the beautiful pink and white flowers too. The sakura was used as a nationalistic symbol in propaganda during World War II, but the flower has recovered a better reputation since that point.
Temari (手まり), also known as “hand balls,” were once a common children’s toy made from remnants of old kimono. It’s was common for mothers of the aristocracy and nobility to craft them for their children, hence it was seen as a sign of wealth and status. Mothers today still make them for their children because they layer papers with goodwill wishes for her child between the various layers of fabric and stitching. It’s said that a mother never reveals the wishes she placed into the temari.

Holy cow! We’ve been waiting for these babies to bloom, so exciting, I love adding new crops! To get the stems to have multiple buds on them, we cut out the center blooms, so for now we’ve got these little shorties but they are still pretty amazing, and I can’t wait for the full stems to be in production. It’s like a cosmo and a ranunculus has a baby. 🧡🧡🧡#butterflyranunculus #orange #marchflowers . . . #Cbusfarmers #flowerfarmer #locallygrown #ohioflowers #farmerflorist #smffblooms #thecolumbusflowercompany #freshcutflowers (at Sunny Meadows Flower Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bu7EZB9A-2l/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ddv0oe98csq2
Essential Japanese Seasonal Decorations - Spring
Seasonality: Mid Spring/ March
Japanese Name: Wagashi - Sakura Mochi
English Name: Traditional Japanese Confectionery - Sticky Cherry Blossom Rice Cake
Sakuramochi (桜餅) is a Japanese sweet consisting of sweet pink-colored rice cake (mochi) with a red bean paste (anko) center, and wrapped in a pickled cherry blossom (sakura) leaf. Different regions of Japan have different styles of sakuramochi. Kanto-style uses shiratama-ko (白玉粉, rice flour) to make the rice cake, and Kansai-style uses dōmyōji-ko (道明寺粉, glutinous rice flour). The sweet is traditionally eaten during the spring season, and especially on Girl's Day (hinamatsuri) and at flower viewing parties (hanami). The leaf may or may not be eaten, depending on individual preference.
