Interesting to see people hate on Preston and Marcy Long in the big 26 as if it's funny or original or perceptive or anything other than what it is, which is most often someone funneling racism and misogyny toward fictional characters. But it's just a joke, you see. It's not that deep, you fear.
The worst thing Preston does is exist as a Black character while asking the player to complete tasks not materially different than equivalent asks from white characters. The text of Fallout 4 tells us this is him extending an invitation to improve the collective circumstances of the residents of the Commonwealth. Nobody responds with violence or mockery when it's Desdemona or Gage or Hancock giving you fetch quests to help improve their circumstances.
The worst thing Marcy Long does is exist as an Asian character who does not hide her trauma, or package it in a way that is easy for the player character to digest. Marcy lost her child during Quincy, then had to flee and travel across the Commonwealth to start her life over again. When Asian women do not compartmentalize away their pain or otherwise do not act in a submissive fashion that benefits others, they are mocked or threatened with violence.
For these supposed sins both are subject to mods that alter FO4 to make them killable or change their race and endless tired "jokes" about how annoying they are. Meanwhile, the fascism and genocidal ambitions of the Brotherhood of Steel/Institute (and what that says about characters who belong to these institutions) goes largely unexamined. People are ok with evil patriarchs, but the moment a Black man or Asian woman ask a favour or refuse to smile at you, they deserve another tired-ass "joke". When you act this way it tells Black and Asian people how little you think of your words and you're making this a hostile place for them to exist!
