I write Fallout 4 fanfiction, make mods and take very elaborate screenshots. I also write fanfic for Portal and Fallout TV.

Long Time Running is a slow burn longfic that turns RJ's time at Med-Tek into a failure, forcing him to start over to help his child. It discusses law, class stratification, neurodivergence and mental health; addresses the Canadian Annexation and Dogmeat talks like he's Charlie from All Dogs Go To Heaven.

I'm gaymarried to @nunc-pro-tunc, who does great artwork and writes fascinating meta research posts about Fallout. We met on this post!

[I contend with severe social anxiety. Posting and interacting with people is doctor-recommended exposure therapy after I received an anon threat that I had no choice but to take seriously, which took me offline for much of 2025. I look at messages (or I'm too afraid to look!) and then I overthink about responding and sometimes I get back to people the same day and sometimes it's months later. It's not personal - I am trying my best to be brave. I want to be here but if I want to get better and move past the trauma, I also have to honour where I'm at. I know people are accustomed to instant access and rapid speed communication, so I get how it might be confusing, rude or very push/pull and off-putting. I don't want to be anxious like this and I wish I could switch it off. I'm sorry!]

I have wrestled with considerable Bad Art Feelings for a long time. I was in IB Art in Grade 12; it was my first time being in a class of artists who seemed to be better at everything I thought I was good at. It was a big hit to my ego that still resonates to this day. Being good at art was my identity, and being around other artists - and doing group critiques - made me feel small. I did not possess resilience for when my identity felt attacked; I did not know what to do when something at the center of my being one day made me feel like a fraud. I stopped making creative works for most of my 20s.

Kinda sad because I know now I was coasting on being decent at art, but I had not developed the skill of studying + was not used to being critiqued and challenged. Those things can be worked through with the right mentor, schooling environment, or at least with some soul searching and good ol resilience! And then in 2021 when I was 27 I started writing LTR and making things again. I felt more myself than I had in a very long time. All the periods in my life where I wasn't making art were the worst ones.

Nowadays I do not feel jealousy or experience ego spirals. It's more of a mourning for the artist I could be if I had kept going; it's a sadness about missed time. When I draw something, I'm often really bad at moving pieces beyond sketches and composing backgrounds. I'm never super satisfied with drawings, so I gravitate toward styles that invite messiness, like risograph-inspired colour layering. Or I do photography instead because it's easier to compose what I want to see in real life or in a video game than to draw it out. Sometimes I think of the screenshots as lesser even though they are just as worthy as anything I've written or drawn.

I am never ever satisfied no matter the medium. For writing, I am very good at editing my work and improving the little things I'm not satisfied with. Maybe someday I can turn that into a driving force to keep iterating on visual art. I will say I love being a multimedia artist; I do like expressing myself in any way I see fit, whether it is writing or art or screenshots. I'm not defined by one practice and prefer it that way; I imagine many artists don't want to be tied down to one medium and would find being in a box stifling.

my life's work is to become a mold spore that grows on computer processor hardware that makes people go "ohhhh I should play fallout" and one of the symptoms showing irreversible damage is that they end up creating fanarts about NPCs with 3 lines of dialogue and taking on new hobbies just to figure out a worldbuilding question like "how do wastelanders make clothing" and "what would brahmin cheese taste like"

If someone is doing things that don't make Sense, try to understand that it is entirely possible that their brain is probably under an enormous weight and fracturing under the pressure. People who have been stabbed will sometimes talk a circle around the fact that they've been stabbed because stress and shock prevent you from recognizing the distress you are in and what you need to do to seek help for it. PTSD will do this also. You will find yourself repeatedly jamming a bag of frozen fruit into the same spot in the freezer where it doesn't fit and keeps falling, over and over and over, focused on nothing but that bag. You will decide that a beanbag chair is 10000% necessary to your life. You will lose your entire shit because you stubbed your toe on a table and that means the whole setup of your furniture is wrong. These are largely harmless examples. People under strain will also hurt themselves and others. Cornered animals bite. And it doesn't heal the bite to go "Hey, are you okay?" But it might get you to an animal that stops biting, so you can start to heal. And before you had an animal that bit, you probably had an animal that kept doing shit you didn't understand as stress signals

Mental illness is Off-putting. Trauma and stress make people hard to be around. There are no perfect victims. If your framework for someone under pressure are people who cry photogenically at home in the bathroom or at night when everyone else is asleep and then wake up and act like they're fine then you will fail to recognize it when your coworker who's normally really nice suddenly blows up on someone for leaving forks in the company sink.

Everyone is going through shit. And it doesn't make it okay for them to treat others badly, but it also sometimes makes it difficult for them to recognize that they're treating you badly, like the person on the phone with 911 who no longer realizes that he's telling the operator about his day and not answering questions. When your friend of ten years who has a new boyfriend suddenly starts being a massive bitch to you about your weight maybe she's just being a cunt, or maybe she's internalized some bullshit. You don't have to take that, but you Can go "Hey, what the fuck?" And that is often more helpful than you realize. It is easy to assume that someone who does something cruel is acting with intent, but especially in cases where someone's behavior changed in a short span of time, they aren't, any more than the person who is convinced the beanbag chair is going to fix them.

You don't have to give people endless chances. But you should give them at least one chance. Because on your worst week, it's going to be you crying at your friend's birthday party because she ran out of chili before you got to have some, and you're going to want some grace for yourself.

I do not think rushing barns is helpful toward this goal; I think the big key is fishing, forage, mines

Fishing fishing fishing (especially during the rain + when your pickaxe is with Gruff). Don't forget to fish in the marsh

I am still investigating how "good" or useful the rare chum is. Tbh the recipe takes a long time to get unless you got it from a Bottled Surprise and the fishing shop only sells one a week. It can be helpful but I don't think it helps that much toward this particular goal

Save time on travel back and forth by using save and quit to teleport back to the farm. Got enough ores to build your next pickaxe? Save and quit so you can toss them in the smelter. Fishing in the marsh at 9:30 PM and need to get to Adeline before she locks the door at 10? Save and quit.

Opening the third mine. I didn't want to have to do that (because it means you're without a pickaxe for 6 days while it upgrades). But I have a save file sitting at 61/75 donations on Spring 17 without Mine 3 being open and I can see how it is holding me back

I think buying copper, iron and titanium ores from Gruff every week massively helps so that you don't have to wait as long for your own ores to cook

i admit i am getting wary whenever people vaguepost about a fandom being 'full of drama' because a lot of people seem to use 'drama' as a synonym for like. discussions of bigotry and bias in media. which is so very much not the same thing and it hurts my head to see it conflated with shipping wars and headcanon discourse.
