10. You can trust me
“Absolutely not.” Mad stated as he started up at the large piece of machinery. Nothing about the ‘Ferris wheel’ look pleasant to any degree.
“Blank says that to fully experience the carnival is to go on the Ferris wheel.” Mare said as he looked up as well.
“Then Blank can do it, I don’t have to.” Mad huffed. “All I can feel is everyone else’s fear and anxiety about the height and it’s all-” Mad shivered and groaned to portray what he meant.
“Are you scared?” Mare asked with a tease in his voice.
“I’m not, they are.” Mad pointed at the couple behind them, both looking as if they were going to go green at any second. “And I also don’t trust anything advanced in this run-down carnival so like hell I trust that thing.”
“You can trust me.” Mare said with a smile that cause a sweet burning in Mad’s stomach that forced him to use every ounce of self control to not have his face flush.
“That doesn’t change what that thing is.” Mad mumbled, crossing his arms in a pout.
“I don’t want to hear Blank and Phantom go on and on about how we didn’t go on the ride with them and I know you definitely don’t want to hear that from Phantom.” Mare handed some tickets to the carnival worker, enough for both of them to go on. “It’s too late now, I already paid.” Mare looped his arm through Mad’s and lead him into the seat.
“Hands up.” The worker said before lowering the bar, giving it a quick tug to ensure it was in place. “Enjoy your spin.” He added with a little chuckle and stepped away, giving a thumbs up to the other worker.
“He’s genuine.” Mad said when they started moving. “Shocking since so many of these other workers aren’t.”
“Blank and Phantom are a few chairs ahead of us.” Mare pointed up.
“Cool for them.” Mad said in a flat tone, looking down and seeing that they were getting higher and higher up. “God.”
“That’s not a good face.” Mare commented when Mad tilted his head back.
“There’s a lot of scared people all scared of the same thing and it’s gross.” Mad said as he could feel his chest tightening.
“For such a smart man, you sure use the word ‘gross’ to describe a lot of things.” Mare said in a soft voice, placing his hand on Mad’s shoulder. “Your face is going pink.”
“It’s...It’s the fear.” Mad cleared his throat while Mare looked around.
“Oh!” Mare saw the couple from before, seeing that one of them was holding the other who wasn’t looking good as well. “Let me try something.”
“Anytime you say that someone usually ends up dead.” Mad grunted.
“No deaths today, Blank would cry.” Mare moved closer to Mad. “Lean against me.”
“I’m not-”
“Lean against me.” Mare wrapped his arms around Mare and pulled him against his chest, resting his head on top of Mad’s. Mad went stiff and his eyes were wide, if his face was pink before it was now a bright red. “Is it working?” Mad could only squeak in response. “I’m not sure how to take that.”
“It’s doing great.” Mad forced out, knowing he should move away but he found himself enjoying this embrace more than he thought he would. It was surprisingly warm and soft and the tightness in his chest was loosening, being replaced with that sweet burning that went all the way down his body and rested in the pit of his stomach. It was...nice.
“Mare! Mare! How’s it’s hanging!?” Phantom called from above, Blank giggling as he shouted.
At least it was good while it lasted.

“Do you need to go to the hospital?” And “sleep is for the weak” with MareMad?
“Mads? You still up?” “Sleep is for the weak, as some will tell you. I’ve got work to do, sleep can wait.” Mad’s voice crackles and breaks as he speaks, and once he’s done speaking he coughs into his shoulder. “Do you need to go to the hospital?” Mare asks, glancing to the bandaged hand and sickly face of his boyfriend. Mad shakes his head a bit, squinting almost-deliriously at Mare.
“Hospitals are shit at their jobs.”“Sure. Please come sleep?”“Fine.” Mad sighs, dropping out of his chair and moving over to cling to Mare. “But you’re helping make up for the lost time.”“As always, dear, I’m happy to help.”
