Back in my youth, I wished I could be a marine flatworm (Turbellaria), but had to accept the reality of my status as a member of Cestoda. I would never swim freely outside of a host organism, or hunt my own food. I was crushed.

Obviously, things got better. I wish I could go back in time and tell my past self that I would end up doing things (running the Department of Health and Human Services) that one of those free-living, garish bastards could never dream of.

Funguary '24: Penicillium | Paintbrush Flatworm

Funguary is back for another year!! This year, I'll just do 1 prompt per week, so 4 in total. Don't want to stress myself out too much and I have other projects I want to work on as well (:

Here's my take on penicillium in the form of a marine flatworm! I loved painting nudibranchs for Funguary in 2023 and wanted to try drawing other sea slugs/worms 👀

Penicillium, commonly known as mold/mould, is present in an variety of forms besides breaking down spoiled food. Penicillium is also used in cheese-making to produce cheeses like camembert, brie and roquefort, and penicillium chrysogenum is industrially used to produce the antibiotic penicillin that stops/kills certain bacteria growth! Penicillium is derived from Latin for 'painter's brush' where the chains of conidia when magnified look like a broom.

I struggled with the rendering for this one due to my inexperience painting wavy things though I stared very hard at my references, haha. Nonetheless I just did what I could so I could move on and glad I finished!

Each #Funguary2024 I do will be depicted as a sea creature and designed like an encyclopedia page. Funguary is a yearly drawing challenge in February hosted by artist Feefal to turn fungi prompts into characters.

#1377 - Maritigrella fuscopunctatus - Dusky Spotted Flatworm

AKA Eurylepta fuscopunctatus, and Pseudoceros fuscopunctatus. Another discovery by Andrea Watts at the Omeo Wreck here in Perth.

Initially I thought it was a nudibranch, going by the vivid colours, but I was quite wrong - it’s actually a Euryleptid flatworm.

Euryletids are free-swimming, active carnivores and scavengers, and feed by enveloping encrusting sponges and ascidians and pushing their stomach out through the mouth, which is also their anus.

They generally glide over the sea bottom but are also capable of swimming short distances by undulating their sides.  Common in shallow waters from Perth to Geographe Bay, but the colours and pattern can be surprisingly variable. The middle of the body may anything from orange to orange-brown to cream spots in a broad to narrow honeycomb pattern, or a single row of orange dots. Around the edges it can have large purple black (or sometimes creamy brown) spots (or blotches or sometimes as transverse lines) extending from the medial area in rows.
