RIP to the Big Lady of Greek Music, Marinella
Marinella (1938 - 2026) was quite possibly the most important female representative of the laikó music, the most popular and distinctly Greek music genre. She also represented Greece in the country's debut in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1974. Her impressive career spanned 68 years as she was still active and performing in large sold-out gigs up until she suffered a stroke during a show in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, exactly one and a half year ago. She passes away at the age of 88.
I tried to find important songs of hers to link here as a tribute but they were so many that I got overwhelmed trying to choose. In the end, I chose a few I personally like the most.
Εγώ κι εσύ (Τα λόγια είναι περιττά) - Me and you (Words are pointless)
Κοίτα με στα μάτια - Look me in the eyes
Άνοιξε, πέτρα - Open up, stone
Κρίμα το μπόι σου - Wasted goes your stature
Καμιά φορά - Once in a while
Σταλιά, σταλιά - Drop by drop
Τ'αθάνατο νερό - The immortal water
BONUS: Ζιγκουάλα - Ziguala
I am also adding this live performance with her then husband, also legendary singer Stelios Kazantzidis, because I LOVE how she looks here and because I find it amusing how obviously awkward and camera shy Kazantzidis is and Marinella, who had incredible confidence and stage presence throughout her entire career, looks like she tries to encourage him even though at the time he was a more seasoned performer than she was. But mostly because she looked so damn fine!!!
Have a good journey into the light and immortality, Marinella
