RIP to the Big Lady of Greek Music, Marinella

Marinella (1938 - 2026) was quite possibly the most important female representative of the laikó music, the most popular and distinctly Greek music genre. She also represented Greece in the country's debut in the Eurovision Song Contest back in 1974. Her impressive career spanned 68 years as she was still active and performing in large sold-out gigs up until she suffered a stroke during a show in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, exactly one and a half year ago. She passes away at the age of 88.

I tried to find important songs of hers to link here as a tribute but they were so many that I got overwhelmed trying to choose. In the end, I chose a few I personally like the most.

I am also adding this live performance with her then husband, also legendary singer Stelios Kazantzidis, because I LOVE how she looks here and because I find it amusing how obviously awkward and camera shy Kazantzidis is and Marinella, who had incredible confidence and stage presence throughout her entire career, looks like she tries to encourage him even though at the time he was a more seasoned performer than she was. But mostly because she looked so damn fine!!!

Versace, Valentino, Armani, Ferre: the four giants of Italian fashion (Italian fashion was not and is not made up solely of them; there are many other excellent names) who brought prestige and taught the style of elegance expressed through ingenuity and innovation as a distinctive feature of excellence.

As of today, all four are in the Olympus of history.

Surely they were not saints, not at all... but honour must be given to the art they expressed.

This photo was taken by Adriana Mulassano, who in 1985 brought together the most prominent figures in fashion at that time.The names of the people are:

Laura Biagiotti, Mario Valentino, Gianni Versace, Krizia, Paola Fendi, Valentino Gravani, Gianfranco Ferrè, Milla Schon, Giorgio Armani, Ottavio Missoni, Franco Moschino, Luciano Soprani

But Italian fashion is not just about them... Would you like to know who is one of the oldest jacket fabric manufacturers in the world? Vitale Barberis Canonico has been producing fabrics and jackets since 1663... an Italian name from Piedmont (300 years before Armani or Valentino, etc.). The oldest jewellery shop in the world? (meaning a “classic” commercial activity) Mellerio dits Meller, since 1613, a family from Piedmont (Italy) who moved to Paris... (which offered its works to the Queen of France, Catherine de Medici... a member of the Florentine family) and so we could move on to the world of shoes... perfumes with “Santa Maria Novella” since 1221 or E.Marinella ties... or hat manufacturers... to many other tailors in southern Italy such as Cesare Atollini, etc., etc... italian style.

I would like to add one thing... These fashion giants are not idyllic companies... this has been known for a long time, and recently an Italian investigative television programme called Report has been bringing to light all the criminal behaviour that these companies engage in, using systems based on non-verification of production processes. Producing a bag, an item of clothing or a shoe costs the Chinese company that manufactures in Italy around €50... You buy it for €500 or €5,000/€8,000 per bag, etc., etc...

For those companies, you customers are idiots, happy to be treated like idiots, and you pay to be treated that way.

PS: Obviously, not all of these companies' products are manufactured by Chinese companies in Italy or by Italian companies that behave like Chinese companies, but there are some products from these companies that are manufactured in-house by the companies themselves or by other companies that manufacture with respect for people's lives and where the production cost is higher, at €100/150 or even more per item. When you go to these shops, remember this.

La storia di Marinella

Questa è la storia di Marinella, una donna vera, che in certi tratti richiama la poesia della Marinella di Fabrizio De André, ma che vive di una luce propria, scavata nel dolore e riforgiata nella forza.

Conosco Marinella realmente, e conoscerla è una di quelle fortune che la vita ti dona di rado. L’ho vista ragazza, fragile ma già temprata, e oggi, che è donna, è una creatura straordinaria con la schiena dritta, anche quando il peso del mondo ha provato a spezzarla, non solo in senso figurato.

Marinella ha un cuore puro, ma non intatto. È cresciuta in una famiglia sgretolata dall’incomprensione, portando sulle spalle il ruolo che doveva essere di sua madre, oltre a quello di sorella maggiore, troppo presto, troppo sola.

Ha conosciuto il dolore che morde la pelle e l’anima, eppure non ha mai smesso di coltivare sogni d’amore, come fiori che spuntano tra le crepe di un selciato.

Essere suo amico è un privilegio, perché la sua voce, anche dopo anni, mi ricorda cosa sia la determinazione. Marinella ha imparato a non piegarsi: né alle persone ciniche che cercano anime gentili da spezzare, né a una vita che a volte sembra accanirsi con crudeltà.

Un giorno, il destino le mise davanti un re senza corona, con un cappello bianco come la luna e un mantello rosso come la passione. Bussò alla sua porta, senza un motivo apparente, e lei, con il coraggio di chi non teme di sognare, lo seguì, come una fanciulla che insegue un aquilone nel vento. Come la Marinella della poesia cantata.

Ho visto i suoi occhi accendersi, il suo sorriso sbocciare come un’alba. Era felice, con il suo re senza corona, e anche nelle sue fragilità teneva la schiena dritta, nascondendo le crepe di una vita di fatiche. Ma la felicità, per Marinella, è sempre stata un’ospite fugace.

Una notte senza luna, la vita le strappò il suo re, sconfitto da un nemico silenzioso che cresceva dentro di lui. Marinella rimase sola, con la schiena ormai segnata da cicatrici profonde, a camminare in un mondo che sembrava voltarle le spalle. I suoi passi, leggeri come le foglie d’autunno che si posano su un prato, nascondevano un dolore che avrebbe schiantato chiunque.

Eppure, Marinella non si è arresa. La sua anima è indomita, un fuoco che brucia anche sotto la cenere. Oggi, con quella cicatrice che le scorre lungo la schiena, dove ogni punto di sutura è un segno di ogni battaglia e di ogni perdita, si è rialzata. Ha imparato che non è mai davvero sola, perché lei, Marinella, è molto più di ciò che ha sofferto. È la forza che l’ha ricostruita, la dignità che l’ha incoronata.

Se un giorno seguirà un altro re, non sarà per colmare un vuoto, ma per aggiungere una gemma alla corona preziosa che lei stessa ha forgiato, indossandola con grazia. Marinella brilla, anche con la schiena in pezzi e quella cicatrice che su di lei, lungi dall’offuscarla, è la prova di una bellezza unica, un ricamo armonioso cucito dal coraggio e dalla vita stessa.

Grazie Marinella per ogni tua parola, che diventa un dono, che mi dà il coraggio di combattere.
