The Whale: A Love Story by Mark Beauregard
As soon as I learned about this book I knew I needed to read it. This is historical fiction, somewhat speculative, about the relationship between Herman Melville (Moby Dick) and Nathaniel Hawthorne (The Scarlet Letter). You see, they exchanged some pretty spicy letters by 1850s standards and there’s been speculation that they were perhaps more than friends.
This is gay fanfiction about famed authors Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Incredibly well researched and historically accurate gay fanfiction. And I’m living for it.
The story is adorably sweet and somewhat melancholic and hilarious in it’s anachronism. The delight I feel watching Melville pine and swoon like a romance novel heroine for pages on end is boundless. But it’s also bittersweet. Because this isn’t truly fanfiction, where everyone gets a happy ending, but historical fiction. Our two heroes don’t get to live happily ever after, because that’s not what happened in real life.
Beauregard has definitely done his research. He’s dug through archives and lifted from the actual letters written between Melville, Hawthorne, and their close friends to build an accurate-as-possible picture of their relationship. We’ll never know what truly passed between these two men, but this feels like a realistic portrayal.
