MAGA/ICE Violence
I am sick and tired of hearing about Charlie Kirk and his alleged killer. That same day a school shooting happened and it wasn’t even mentioned in a lot of news reports. And let’s not forget the school/church shooting that happened like two weeks before this news cycle.
Was his death horrifying? Sure especially to the people who didn’t sign up to see it in person nor the people who saw it online. But I’m sorry his life isn’t more important than anyone else’s and the fact that the right is trying to turn him into a martyr is rage inducing.
Melissa, Mark and Gilbert were assassinated in their own home in the middle of the night. John and Yvette Hoffman were also shot in their own home. And yet nobody talks about them anymore nor did the left try to turn them into martyrs.
If you only condemn political violence when it happens to someone you agree with, then you're actually condoning it.
An America Worthy of Freedom Must Choose Ballots Over Bullets
Olivia Julianna at A New Perspective:
I was 17 years old the first time I received a death threat on social media. As I grew older and became more deeply involved in politics, those threats only grew louder, more frequent, and more violent. By the time I was serving as a surrogate for campaigns and candidates, the messages weren’t just cruel—they were terrifying. Some promised to kill me. Others promised sexual assault. I have been stopped in public while holding the hands of my sibling’s young children. I have had to build walls of precaution around the people I love. There were times we even had to warn my nieces’ and nephews’ schools, so they would know to take extra care when danger felt too close.
This is the reality I have lived, because political violence is no longer an exception in America—it is a reality. I have carried this, because raising your voice in this country has become dangerous. And I have no doubt that Charlie Kirk had similar conversations with his friends and family as well.
Kirk was a controversial and highly influential figure, much more than just a right-wing podcaster. The truth is, the Republican Party in its current form would not exist without his work. He built an organizing machine among young voters so formidable that it helped propel Donald Trump into the White House. His murder is, without question, a devastating loss for the Republican Party. It is difficult for me to even imagine what it feels like to lose someone of his stature—because the left simply has no figure who has built the kind of foundation and infrastructure that Charlie Kirk created for his party and his movement. His organization Turning Point USA has over 850 chapters across America’s colleges and universities, and over 250,000 members.
His influence reshaped the trajectory of this country—most often in ways I challenged—but it cannot be denied. I know this because I have spent my career in opposition to him, working to mobilize voters and elect Democrats. I understand the work Charlie Kirk did because I was so often on the other side of it. We carried very different visions of what America should be, and it is precisely because of those differences that I can recognize just how impactful he truly was.
My own work has been about building a safer, more just country—a place where people can live freely and shape their own American Dream. And it is because of that vision that I recognize the depth of the tragedy his murder represents.
