Three (count 'em, THREE) posts for your delectation, edification & enjoyment today.
Beer & Books Talk for Central Oregon Beer Week, by Mark Lindner, aka Beer Librarian (@bythebbl). Mmmmm, beer. Mark announces, in honor of Central OR Beer Week:
So I will be promoting the awesomeness that is books (and other resources) and our local libraries as a sort of feral librarian out in the community-at-large. If I am awesome in the process then more power to me, but my goal is to help my local community make use of and appreciate the beer resources that are available to them.
Now that's what I call service!
The great Teri Lesesne (AKA @professornana) talks about the value of the Unexpected Outcomes that result from a team-based booktalking initiative she undertakes each year at Sam Houston State University in Houston, TX:
So often people confuse us with the university library staff. They have no real idea of who we are and what we can offer students, faculty, and the larger community. By taking on this small program, we help spread the word about libraries, librarians, books, and reading. And while Rosemary and I think of booktalking as something we just DO, we realize that there are others who do not know this powerful tool for connecting readers and books. We are planting some seeds here, seeds we hope will result in more people knowing what it is librarians and libraries can offer them.
Fab! (Side note: Teri's colleague bears the same name as my beloved, life-changing 5th grade teacher. I think my Ms. Chance is still in NJ, but I love the idea that there's another great Rosemary Chance out there!)
New Jersey's own Leigh Woznick (Wozleigh) has contributed a guest post at A Chair, A Fireplace & A Tea Cozy, all about the many forms professional development can take, and the importance of taking charge of it, ourselves:
One of the teachers I was working with last week helped me put it in perspective. She was reflecting how much the library has changed in the 7 years I’ve been there, impressed with my knowledge of resources and technology (we did an Edmodo project together last year). She’s a friend, so I told her my feelings of inadequacy. “You don’t know what’s out there!” I whined. She said no matter how far behind I thought I was from the ideal, I am still light years ahead of what she and most of her colleagues knew. So whatever I had to offer was gold.
I will be reading & re-reading these posts all week. Thanks so much to Mark, Teri & Leigh for kicking off this week on such a high note!
