Jazz from Detroit: Mark Stryker Interview

Mark Stryker is the author of the recently published Jazz From Detroit, which I have yet to read, but which comes highly recommended. Ethan Iverson has conducted a lengthy interview with Mark which reveals the author to be a striking author, intellectual and musician. It’s great getting to know his ideas and the people with whom he mentored and the people he has championed. A remarkable man and a great read!

Ira Gitler, R.I.P.

On February 23, we lost Ira Gitler, a good friend and great contributor to jazz journalism. Mark Stryker has written a wonderful essay on Ira’s work on Do The Math. Little known fact: John Coltrane was playing Ira’s alto sax on the Gene Ammons All-Stars album on the Prestige label!
