Marks AU: you know those soothing pictures with stuff like perfectly ordered stacks of apples and perfectly round snowballs and stuff like that? They drive villain marks up the wall and make their mark urges go nuts. Usually when in shops with perfectly ordered shelves they can resist the urges but sometimes you get stuff like someone (TADASHI) removing one apple and all of them falling while they cackle or Hiro going to soft drink aisles and swapping differently coloured drinks around.

They restrain themselves around Aunt Cass because they know she likes that kind of ordered stuff, but on their own they’re little demons. BOYS NO!

Marks AU: so Tadashi's sitting in a wheelchair in the children's ward, being mobbed by happy kids and there's these little lights everywhere and then a parent walks in just in time to see Tadashi gently toss a glowing orb at least as big as his head at the ceiling. It bursts and suddenly it's raining glowing confetti? Except it's not confetti it's little tiny lights of various colours? Some of which are so tiny they're basically glitter? Also the ceiling is fine.

Marks AU: On several occasions the team has had to deal with teenaged villain marks who got totally blindsided by the surge of mark hormones and urges, didn't know how to deal, and ended up running around smashing things. Hiro mostly suggests that if they HAVE to smash things, use sugar glass or ice, and smash them in the bathtub. Or if they just want to make a mess, GLITTER. Or smash stuff and make a mess in video games.

Marks AU: It actually takes quite a while for word to get out of the city that Hiro’s a villain mark. People from outside the city who are even aware that there’s a villain mark in the group assume it’s Gogo or Honey Lemon (or in one memorable instance, Fred, which resulted in a lot of trolling and hilarity) and then usually assume that everyone else is a hero mark. Sometimes this leads to issues. Like the incident where Hiro got given a thing that amplified mark urges. He ended up smearing mud on his face in two lines and yelling “I’M RAINBOW DASH!”, right in Wasabi’s face, while grinning in a very unhinged way. Then he started laughing.

Luckily they worked out the problem and removed the thing before he went full on hellraiser and started trying to break stuff. (Villain marks gone bad are termed ‘hellraisers’. Dunno what the hero mark equivalent term would be. )

And nobody outside of the Big Hero 6 overheard, which was good.

The mud was hard to explain though.

I’m sensing a glitter theme in this AU. Dunno where I could be getting this from though :P

As for the Hero Mark equivalent term, what about “Paladins”? Because they’re supposed to be super virtuous, but that can actually get kind of annoying for people when the hero marks get too stuck up and absorbed in their ‘goodness’

Actually I was thinking Marks AU Fred tries to fix the problem by basically paying people to desegregate. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. The mayor eventually gets him to stop by making a bylaw forbidding hero mark only establishments.

Marks AU: There's three general types of powers. Powers that can atrophy when not used, like Gogo's. Powers that have an ideal strength and will try to go to that ideal strength if any is used up or added, like Cass's. And powers that build and build unless used, and can be used up, like Tadashi's. (When in hospital he had no clue what to do with the little lights he made. So he just made them stick to the walls. )

Fred’s Dad has to step in and take his credit card away. “Fred no. This is not how we solve problems. Trust me, I have tried”

Tadashi’s hospital room was probably the prettiest. Maybe when he was feeling better the nurses would wheel him down to the pediatric wards in a wheelchair and get him to put up lights for all of the little kids. I bet they’d love that!

So in the Marks AU, hero marks should get mark urges too. When they are being safely satisfied hero mark urges and villain mark urges are very, very different.

But have them go out of control, and they’re both just as dangerous and can get very similar.

Since Tadashi got some satisfaction from going 20 in a 15 zone, villain mark urges probably at their core are about chaos and rulebreaking; hero mark urges, then, are about order and following or creating rules. Usually that’s done by helping people, making things, setting useful rules and seeing that they’re followed, etc.

Hero marks tend to see their powers as ‘physics listens to me’, villain marks tend to see them as ‘screw you, physics’.

Evil villain marks wreak havoc, terrorise places, try to knock valuable structures (societal and physical) down. Evil hero marks tend to dictatorship, but sometimes they latch onto something weird (like hero mark=good and villain mark=evil) and consider that an inviolable truth, trying to destroy anything that doesn’t fit.

Stalin was probably a hero mark.

Marks AU Megapost

Oh my goodness, there’s so many Marks AU in the inbox right now I’m just gonna make a megapost and put them all together in like a Marks AU Blitz. Here we go!

Mark urges are relatively weak before puberty, then spike; the strength difference varies from person to person. Tadashi is totally blindsided. Hiro's were unusually strong before puberty and then didn't peak as much. Then, slowly, they weaken again, although they always remain stronger than before the spike.

Makes sense. Maybe Mark urges are related to hormone levels? And types? Like maybe Hero Mark people have a higher level of a certain hormone associated with those marks, while Villain Marks have something different? LOOK AT US WE’RE SCIENCING THIS BITCH

Imagine the marks AU Nerd Herd all ending up being Hiro's honorary siblings. Then each other's honorary siblings. Then Tadashi's found. And he's like ? Gogo is getting into a massive argument with Fred over food? Honey Lemon's joining in? Hiro joining in is nice, he's comfortable enough to argue, but then WASABI joins in. Tadashi is very confused. Hiro tries to bring Tadashi into the big fun sibling argument but he is too confused.

Can you blame him? He’s never seen Hiro this open with anyone, and suddenly he’s got this huge family group? And while he’s kind of happy to see Hiro with all these friends, part of him is a teeeeeeny bit....jealous.

When marks AU Hiro manages to catch up to the criminal villain mark, it's in a shop or something. There's a fight, and although everyone except the criminal is doing their best to reduce collateral, a giant mess still ensures. Mostly it's just stuff knocked over or onto the floor, but Hiro is still horribly ashamed. He could've prevented some of that, but he didn't, and some of the more minor stuff is very definitely his fault.

He can’t help it. He’s got his own Villain Mark urges, and making a mess helped calm them. The team points out that this is a good way to get the urges because no one gets hurt, and realistically if he hadn’t messed stuff up, the criminal definitely would have.

Villain mark Hiro's mark is partially red, and he tries to cover up the black with white paint. It works for about 2 hours then the paint starts to flake off from a combination of wrist movements and Hiro scratching at it because it ITCHES. Good makeup meant to be tolerable on a Mark lasts about 6 hours before it starts to itch.

I bet you cosmetic companies make SO MUCH MONEY in this AU. Mostly on Villain Marks, but they probably have a line of like glitter make-up or other things to make Marks pop on those who want to show theirs off.

Imagine Marks AU Tadashi fighting with a mixture of martial arts and baseball. He can make balls of light, he can probably make them hot or electrically charged and fastball them at people. Or just make them bright and fastball them at people's eyes.

He throws them, he bowls them, he tosses them, he bats them with sticks, he shoots them. Basically anything you can do to a sphere of power to make it hit someone, that’s what he does. He throws people off with the sheer variety of moves he uses.

Villain mark Tadashi's mark is freaking huge, it goes over the neckline of most shirts.

Like, over the collarbones and up the neck a little? That’s awesome.

So in an early marks AU post, I said that Tadashi and Hiro used laser tag and prank wars to let out their urges. Then it became conning each other out of dessert and cheating at everything from Monopoly to Go Fish to Twister. Then it became riding an illegally modified moped. Now I'm gonna tie all those together! At first the Hamabros just do the games thing, then Tadashi got the moped, then when Hiro turned 13 they discovered laser tag. Variety!

Maybe their urges shift over time, either changing with age, or maybe they become desensitized to whatever methods they use over time. So they have to constantly be trying new things, or the urges just keep getting stronger.

Marks AU is going out of control in the best way, who wants to make an open to all google doc for worldbuilding? Actually a google doc for filter AU worldbuilding is probably good too, that one got art as well.

The word 'evil' written around the hero marks after the explosion doesn't match with the rest of the mark types (soft pastels for hero marks, red black and white for villain marks). However! Surrounding the marks with red does fit! Also Tadashi's mark is on his chest.

Someone has drawn and submitted some potential Hero and Villain Mark designs (which will be posted once I get to them, there’s a few messages in between), and while I’m not sure if they’re exactly what you had in mind, I’m sure they’re a good starting point.

Or, you know, considering it’s an AU, maybe everyone has their own personal headcanon of what the marks look like? WHO KNOWS, GUESS WE’LL FIND OUT :D

Maybe Tadashi’s mark is high enough that it’s sometimes visible if he leans over in a loose shirt, or if he’s wearing a v-neck, but otherwise it’s easier to hide. Hiro’s mark is much more visible, and he has a much harder time keeping it under wraps.

I mentioned the mark urges in the first post of the marks AU, and since then I've decided on colour differences. Villain marks are red, white, or black (or a mixture). Hero marks are more pinks, browns, greys, and sometimes very faint mintish tints. They all look very weird. People will not get marks that are very similar in colour overall to their marks but patches can be close.

Oh did you? Whoops, I missed that. More observant people than me thankfully picked up on it because otherwise I never would have noticed. (pssst I have been told that the last sentence is supposed to read that basically their marks won’t match their skin. Makes sense to me)

I can see Hiro and Tadashi having black villain marks, very visible ones that are hard to cover up with make-up which makes them suffer even more than other villain marks because a) it’s more noticeable, and b) people assume that a darker mark means a more villainous person. They are obviously wrong though.

Ok, hearing the Villain urge thing gave me an idea about Tadashi.

Tadashi is barely keeping his urges down with cheating on little games, but he doesn’t inheritantly want to do anything bad. Then, on his fifteenth birthday, Cass gets him a moped to drive to and from school (lots of Heroes on public transport make him nervous when they lear at him).

However, even though the junky thing only goes 20 mph when he gets it, it gives him a little thrill when he goes 20 in a 15 zone one day on the way to school. Soon enough, he’s restoring the thing to a ruby red paint and amazing motor, but Tadashi doesn’t stop there. Class catches him putting lithium batteries and a v-cylinder engine in so it can go WAY faster, but, with the promise that he’ll wear a helmet and be careful of pedestrians, she lets it be.

But then Hiro gets involved after getting one ride on Tadashi’s moped (which is essentially a motorcycle now because of how fast it goes, but it still looks like a moped because otherwise he’d have to register it and get a license - which fills his villain urges more knowing it’s illegal at this point). They add more powerful processors, an interchangeable license plate (with a fake and blank), and flight capabilities to the bike as well as face shields to their helmets. Tadashi pushes his limits of his bike on open roads at night (absolutely no people around), which gets a lot of cops on his tail until he kicks it into flight mode (then he’s over the ridge and in the clear).

Cass catches wind of this soon enough when the boys are talking just a little too loudly about one of Hiro’s recent rescues avoiding the cops. While Cass is first furious that they’re doing something so dangerous, she eventually comes down when the boys explain that, on streets with pedestrians, they keep it all legal speeds and helmets. Even in pushing it, they were careful to upgrade their safety gear as well to the point that they could crash into a brick wall and be fine.

This is, of course, how Tadashi meets Gogo for the first time, though. She catches wind of the Villain Marked Demon Brothers - The Speed Demon (Tadashi) and the Little Demon (Hiro) - who are cashing in on Bot Fights and out pacing police on the streets all while hiding their identities behind masks. It doesn’t take her long, as a bike aficionado herself, to recognize the bike when Tadashi rolls it up to SFIT orientation, and, in exchange for specs, Gogo won’t spill. It quickly grows to friendship when they share their speed tricks of the trade.

I’d also like to think that Honey is Gogo’s roommate, Fred’s Tadashi’s friend from High School (Fred and Tadashi had one English class together freshman year, and the mention of robots in a book quickly struck up their friendship), and Wasabi just kind of joined in because, at first, it was their messiness that drove him nuts but then Tadashi actually tried to be cleanly. Wasabi appreciated it, and, because Tadashi didn’t let Wasabi’s appearance scare him off, the robotics student learned that the physics student was nothing more than a gentle giant who loved lasers and tidiness. From there, the Nerd Herd was formed.

(Okay, first of all I love that we’re starting to flesh out the world of this AU a bit more. It’s lookin good guys!

Also I absolutely love how you’ve written them all meeting each other. It makes perfect sense, and it ties everything together so neatly. And heck yes GoGo would want to get in on that. Tadashi’s scooter can fly? There’s no way in hell she’s letting that slip through her fingers)
