Day 12: Porto's Cafe Challenge
Pictured above, Porto's other vegetarian sandwich, the feta, and a side of marquitas.
The feta is feta cheese, fresh basil, vine ripened tomatoes, red onions and olive oil on a french baguette. If you've ever had caprese, this sandwich tastes pretty similar. While the tangy, salty feta isn't at all like a milky mozzarella, the other ingredients give the sandwich a caprese type flavor. I am not sure there is any difference between the tomatoes they use on this sandwich and the tomatoes they use on the others, but the tomatoes I had today were great. Fresh and sweet, they played nicely with the tangy cheese and the olive oil. The onions added a necessary bite and the basil also brought a little sweetness and was refreshing. The baguette was a perfect carier and had a crunchy outside and a soft inside.
Yesterday, I said I liked Porto's veggie sandwich but might not ever get it again. I will be getting the feta again. It was light and I enjoyed every bite.
I had never had marquitas until today. They are lightly salted plantain chips. Pretty much every plantain I have had has been covered in or cooked in some kind of sugar. So, I was quite surprised when they ended up tasting like potato chips. A coworker of mine said in Costa Rica he had a soup where they used plantains and they tasted a lot like potatoes. And after doing some quick internet research, I found that when the plantain is unripe they are really starchy and taste sort of like potatoes. You learn something knew every day. Porto's marquitas made a decent substitute for potato chips, but they could have used more salt.
