TW//: Drug mention.

A mutual of mine said that Jupiterians can struggle with sensory overload and can frequently gravitate towards addictive/destructive substances/behaviors to tone down their sensory input and what I’ve noticed is you see this in a lot of Martian/Jupiterian people who have Mars-Jupiter aspects, especially the opposition.
Mars being domicile in Aries and Scorpio can translate to Mars being related to the brain (neurons and psyche). It’s not only the physical action we take, it’s what internally compels us to take action in the first place. It’s our inner conduct that shapes our external actions and behaviors and people that seek out substances usually have some kind of cognitive dissonance or internal conflict. The term “inner conflict” literally means clashing beliefs, desires, and emotions, which then drives internal struggles/indecision, manifesting in inner tension between what one wants to do (action), versus what one should do (belief/values) which then impacts your behaviors. I think this perfectly sums up Mars-Jupiter oppositions in more extreme cases.
Side note: I also associate Jupiter and Mars as the first and last steps of the alchemical process (first step is to destroy/burn, last is to purify, leading to enlightenment)—Mars being the first rulership lord of the zodiac and Jupiter being the last.
Going back to what my mutual said, stimulation can easily overwhelm these folks and drugs can be an instantaneous way to mitigate that. Jupiter is expansive so it would make sense that it’d cause someone to feel incredibly overwhelmed by the amount of stimulus overload they’re exposed to when in aspect to Mars. I’ve come across and read about many people with Mars-Jupiter oppositions who currently struggle with addictive behaviors/substances or have in the past—some had the capability to overcome these things which ultimately helped them channel their immense energy into something bigger than themselves (like their work/teachings), but others were met with an unfortunate fate, not being able to control their vices ultimately leading to death. This is why I have said in the past that it’s so important for Mars-Jupiter folks to have multiple outlets to healthily channel their heaps of energy because if it’s not properly harnessed, it can lead to more of those self destructive patterns.
Sigmund Freud (Aries) was addicted to cocaine and convinced everyone around him that it could be used to treat illnesses like depression calling it a “miracle drug”. He had a Mars-Jupiter opposition. He also smoked an insane amount of cigars (one cigar is equivalent to 5-10 cigs) on a day-to-day basis because he believed it helped him concentrate on work. He said it “served him as protection and a weapon in the combat of life” which is very Mars-Jupiter coded to me idk lol. A lot of people also suspected that Nietzsche (Scorpio Moon with Mars-Jupiter opposition) also heavily relied on substances to focus on his work and combat his illnesses. A Mars-Jupiter quote of his is “To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.” There’s this other Philosopher named Ayn Rand (Sag Moon) who also had a Mars-Jupiter opposition and she used all kinds of amphetamines to overcome the mental exhaustion she faced from writing because it enhanced her focus and productivity. She called her drug use “an escape from an unbearable inner state.”
French Poet and existentialist Roger Gilbert Lecomte had a Mars-Jupiter opposition and was addicted to opium, morphine and heroin. He did a lot of drug experimentation which included paramnesia, depersonalisation and dissociation from the self. He claimed that “There are no two ways of being a visionary. You can see only through asphyxiation (Mars theme) and congestion (Jupiter theme).” Finally, Actress Lucille Ball (Sag Moon), incredibly smart woman who was known for her role in “I Love Lucy” also had a Mars-Jupiter opposition. She heavily relied on poppers for years to alleviate her chest pains. She’s stated that ‘Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” and “In life, all good things come hard, but wisdom is the hardest to come by.’ which are once again, very Mars-Jupiter coded. I could give about 20 more examples of public figures/people in my life with these prominent energies in their charts who ultimately struggled with the same things.
I have a Mars-Jupiter opposition in my own chart and I know many people with this aspect and it’s funny because we also all happen to have Pisces/Sag/Aries/Scorpio placements in our charts. Many of those in my life with these energies regularly turn to substances because they believe it helps them channel one pathway at a time rather than taking in stimuli all at once. I myself at times have heavily relied on different substances to “lull” my mind because of my overwhelming brainpower, but many of these substances catalyzed my self destructive behaviors (Mars), ultimately leading me to search for meaning (Jupiter) after I hit my lowest point and stopped running from myself.
All of these folks were/are trying to self medicate to ultimately focus on their tasks/work/craft or to alleviate themselves from their minds which can be a slippery slope for sure because drugs are ultimately not a permanent resolution for internal conflict. For the public figures I stated above, they lived around the time where you could literally write your own prescriptions without a physician’s approval so they were handing out opium, cocaine and amphetamines like crazy. I will also say that certain drugs really can act as “cable management” for the brain when not abused which is why I heavily believe in harm reduction and supervised consumption—with that being said, big pharma and psychiatry practices are still deeply flawed.
Destruction (Mars) is one of the fastest ways to invoke a person to search for meaning (Jupiter) and frequently necessary to reach a spiritual/higher consciousness/truth, but it can also lead to total self annihilation if not careful. Sorry if this post is all over the place and obviously not everyone with Mars-Jupiter prominence/aspects will struggle with addiction, but I thought it was an interesting topic to discuss!
